How good is this tiny Creative G1?!

    Side-Note: The Creative Sound BlasterX G1 from the factory is held back thanks to a pre-installed audio-profile which is suitable for consoles too. Which means if you use it on a PC/Laptop/etc it will only deliver up to max. 48khz & 16bit. Theres no option to change that in Windows or inside the Control-Software "BlasterX Acoustic Engine Pro", and you will need an additional software from Creative called "X-Plus Configurator". There you can switch between a couple of audio-profiles, and you should change it from PS4-Generic to just "Generic". After the update 96khz & 24bit are unlocked, and you can switch it from 48/16 to 96/24 in the Windows sound settings. If you wanna use it on console's again, just switch the profile back.

    Good review but would be nice if you have an alternative with the same interface. Getting an internal card will always be better. But some of us maybe just want something we can carry around that can we plug into a PC and get better sound. Let's say we are at work and the machines there were not built for sound but rather word processing. A usb sound card alternative would of been great.

    So is it impossible to drive a pair of headphones over a 100 decibels now? Almost all of the headsets that come with an in line sound card I tried as of late has been really not that loud compared to my 4 years old Razer Kraken 7.1, and that's rated at 112 decibels. I'm about to send back a HyperX Cloud Alpha S headset, because while it's okay for gaming with it's own dongle, it's too "quiet" for my taste when it comes to listening to music. I've been looking at the Sound Blaster G1 as a possible replacement for the original dongle, but I'm not so sure anymore. The headset itself is fine when not using the HyperX dongle, it blows my head off when I plug it into my iPad. Any opinions on this matter?

    • @heksogen4788
      @heksogen4788 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would you want such loud headphones? You will get your hearing damaged. Remember that hearing damage is decibel x exposure, so long exposure to sounds like 90 dB will eventually damage your hearing just as hearing one loud noise that has 150dB and almost pierce your drums.

    Hey Anton, I'm guessing you guys mostly have laptops with more fancy soundcards or +100% boost on. All my Lenovo Think series have awful line level and headphone output sound. I have to crank it to 115% to get a half decent line out signal or headphone volume (on 35 ohm cans). I used to have a full duplex ASIO (24 bit 96 khz) usb mixer by yamaha to fix that. This will do nicely until I find enough money and a proper unit. The G1 and G5 just went on sale here, the G5 for 150 has a hard switch to increase ohms up to 600, ASIO ready, and a Texas instrument dedicated headphone amp with volume control. Also a 120db spl vs 96 for the G1, which is still a good feat. Thanks for the critical review, I hope it does alright for now, it's on the way....

    • @NinjaRastaMon
      @NinjaRastaMon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just noticed all the volume levels in the software were at 90%. Perhaps it is set like that as a safety or for leverage if not sounding up to clip. I am going to increase the sample rate to 96 khz 24 bit in my OS along with the volume levels, hopefully the ohm level will show. Thanks again, also perhaps it wasn't set to the highest sample rate through your OS sound settings. I've seen that it defaults at 16 bit when plugged in.

      Well it works great as expected thankfully in ubuntu, no options but still sounds much better. However trying it on my windows 7 drive gave me only completely distorted sound, like unreasonably... All settings were checked, adjusted, just a fail.. then back to ubuntu and it wouldn't work for some reason, so i had to go back to windows, reset all the settings and uninstalled the software... still took some tinkering and restarts to get it back again on ubuntu.... good luck to all.. rubbish is correct for my windows experience. thanks for the warning.

    I hate when people put dislikes without explanations on my channel, so here it is:
    The device is not made for improving the sound quality, it is a gaming accessory. Its main selling point is downmixing 7.1 output from games into stereo headphones. All the marketing is about 7.1.
    And you've just skipped over these settings in the software.
    Have you started Counter Strike and checked if you can clearly distinguish a shot directly in front of you from a shot directly behind you? Can you tell if a grenade exploded 50 or 65 degrees to your front-left? Can you hear footsteps from 25 meters? These questions should have been answered in the review. The frequency response is much less important.
    And about voice changing feature. Do you know how badly females are abused in MP games? The ability for them to easily switch to male voice is important.
    I do not have this device, I am considering it. And all the youtube reviews are not helpful at all.

    • @AntonsHardware
      @AntonsHardware  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dear LowSkillCamper,
      First off, I love your name! :D And also I really, really appreciate it that you place a comment instead of just a dislike!
      I also understand what you're telling me. I have played several games with the 7.1 mode enabled. I didn't try CSGO, but did try CoD and the division 2. It's just that, I've never found this feature to be that helpful. In my experience it's just adding a lot of reverb and then claiming it to be surround. But, I must admit that I didn't pay as much attention to it as I may have, merely because I dislike it.
      And the voice change things, I haven't looked at it from that point of view either! So thank you for that! In my understanding it was just a stupid gimmick that doesn't contribute to anything usefull. You just pointed out that it does! Do you use all the morphing options or just the female -> male?
      If you are planning on getting a soundcard, get the G6! It may be expensive, but the soundquality is really good, and you get all the options the G1 has.
      PS I'm planning on making a video with all the questions and comments. I'm inserting yours as I truly like your constructive criticism!

    • @lowskillcamper
      @lowskillcamper 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AntonsHardware Thanks for your sober reaction to criticism! "In my experience it's just adding a lot of reverb and then claiming it to be surround. " and "Can you tell if a grenade exploded 50 or 65 degrees to your front-left?" is the difference between a bad and good surround sound implementation. And I'd like to see this distinction in a review.
      This is EXTREMELY important for competitive gaming. I've even created a tool to test different surround sound implementations: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2049460516
      I've experienced good, bad and "false advertising" implementations.
      Examples of good (you can tell very accurate 360 direction to the sound source): Creative Sound Blaster Omni Surround 5.1 USB sound card, Razer Surround Software 2.x (discontunued).
      Bad (there is some directionality, but it is still easy to perceive a sound behind you as a sound in front of you): THX Spatial Sound in the external USB sound card of Razer Blackshark V2 headset, Spatial Sound Card software on Steam.
      False advertising (IMHO): Steel Series Arctis 5 USB sound card, a lot of other brands "7.1" headphones with external sound cards, using DTS Headphone X or Dolby Surround. These ones only provide surround sound in a couple dozens of games which actually support these technologies.
      If your feeling is the claim of providing true surround using stereo headphones is impossible to achieve, read about HRTF. VR would not have been possible without these technologies.
      I've wasted my money on SteelSeries Arctis 5 and Razer Blackshark V2 because I can not find proper reviews of these kinds of products. I've ended up using an old version of Razer Surround which is not supported by the developers anymore, and is kind of finicky to use.
      So now I am looking for a hardware solution which will work with any headphones. And if I believe the marketing claims of G1 it is an ideal device for me. From sound quality standpoint I am totally satisfied by even my integrated audio. I do not need or want any additional input or output ports, or any knobs. And I know that Creative are capable of a proper surround sound implementation, I just need to know if this device can do it.

But it is more than enough for competitive gaming anyway.
      The size and the fact that it does not have any controls is a big plus too. It can safely hang from the back of a PC without cluttering the desktop. And the price is very good too.
