To keep with your role play, I’d say the arc welder would be perfect fit. He’d need to have one and know how to use it to repair ship on the go.

At this point you can have Sarah, Barrett and Vasco as crew members. Sarah allows the extra third crew member and provides 4 points in Astrodynamics, giving much greater range. Vasco gives 2 points in Shields and an extra point into the reactor's power. Barrett provides 4 points in Starship Engineering and a potential 3 points to particle beam ship weapons if you choose to upgrade to some. If you want to assign Lin and Heller to an outpost all you need to do is to build 2 crew stations there. You can also have another companion following you on board without assigning them to the crew.

I've tried to avoid Sarah, but sounds to me that those perks are not to be missed out on - Especially for the early parts of the game. Vasco is still my favourite, and I think we'll enjoy having Barrett along for the ride too.
