In my school especially, there was a rumor going around that if you beat the Elite Four 100 times in Emerald, you get to go on a rocket to the moon where you can catch Deoxys. So basically, kids in my school managed to predict something similar to the Delta episode about 10 years ago...Creepy...
+Charm I heard a different version of that, you had to do stuff until the guy at the space center told you that either 100 or 386 rockets had been successfully launched then you went to the moon to catch jirachi and/ or Deoxys. I saw fake images on google images, so naïve young me instantly tried it.
+Charm Hah, the'd I'd have gotten Deoxys by then... The days where you had to grind the Elite-Four over and over again to level your Pokemon.. Oh how I don't miss those days.
Ironside998 The sad part was that I had 9 level 100 Pokemon in Sapphire, and 6 More in Leaf Green. I had way too much time on my hands back then. And a much higher patience for grinding and chasing strange rumors.
When I heard of Pikablu, I heard it as a joke rather than a serious thing. Someone told me "If you painted Raichu blue you could get a Pikablu, but watch out: if it sneezes, it will turn back into Pik- achoo!" I found that hilarious at the time.
@Cierra Anglin Yes because as we all know The Office, Scrubs, and The Simpsons ALL hit their real stride during the late season mark... Oh wait. Theres no such form of media or show that has maintained a consistent quality for that long. Certain anime have but those are weird examples anyway.
In Gold I heard that whenever you headbutt a tree, you'd have a very small chance to find Celebi. Especially in Ilex forest. I didn't much believe it. But often times when I went somewhere, I found myself head butting a few trees… just… in case.
+MysteryMachineX I head-butted every single tree in that forest. No lie. Obviously some trees could not be reached, but all the ones I could, I head-butt them. ALL OF THEM.
You know, in future Pokemon games, the execs should take a course through all the meta-legends of previous games, and make a few or all off them true as easter eggs. Like a 1/100 chance of getting a wild Celebi from headbutting trees in a certain forest. Also possibly make Missingno a realsl secret Pokemon.
On my schoolyard, my classmates told me the irrefutable way to nab Pikablu. Y'see, what you needed to do was catch a Pikachu in Viridian Forest. Then you needed to level it up to level 25 (since Pikachu is number 25 in the Pokedex). You have to get it EXACTLY to level 25, though. If there's any rollover experience points, you did it wrong, and this won't work (you can't use rare candies or the daycare for this). If you got it exactly to 25, then you need to use a Thunderstone to evolve it into a Raichu. Then, you need to take that Raichu to the Pokemon Daycare and leave it there until it reaches level 99. When you get it back, the Daycare man will say something like 'there's something strange about this Raichu. I think there's great power within it!' or something. Anyway, just level it up to level 100, and then use a Waterstone on it, and presto, you have a Pikablu! It's totally the strongest pokemon ever except for Venustoise!
Christ. this is so similar to the rumors that would go around my school too, even though nobody had this pikablu it was totally real. Everytime I see a Marril or even an Azzuril in newer games I can't help but have disdain for it.
I loved the lore in the 90's. So false, yet we clung to so tightly. I remember someone told me that if I caught 6 unknowns, and spelled "C E L E B I" in my party, I could go to the shrine in Ilex Forest and Celebi would attack you. Then, you could catch it with a Masterball easily. I did this, and I was so disappointed.
@@game84cube the instructions were written in Braille, so you needed a guide or something to even read the instructions. And they were not obvious: using field moves in strange situations and organizing your party in a specific configuration with uncommon Pokémon.
@@kamoroso94 the braille reading guide was in the back of the manual of the games. I have a distant memory of actually finding one of the regis by translating it bit by bit. wild times.
I always loved that classic rumor in Emerald where, if you talked to the guy at the space station at EXACTLY THE RIGHT TIME, you would take the rocket into space and catch Jirachi and Deoxys.
Mine was similar to that, in Emerald version there's a white rock near the space station that had me wracking my brain for weeks! It just looked so suspicious and it was the only white rock in the vicinity and the only one that responded with a description ("It's a white rock"), when in the rest of the game, if you touched a rock, it would only do something if it had an item or something. I thought it had something to do with catching Deoxys for the longest time, it was the only thing that made sense to me.
TheMusicalBoy'93 Replying a year late! But the difference is that it's also easy to DEBUNK the things people believe in now. The 90s did not have that luxury.
+Kenshi0909 Actually.... They probably named it after one of the real glitch Pokemon in the game. It's name IS Rainer.... As in T-rainer. It's missing the T.
+Kenshi0909 To be fair, Umbreon's japanese name is Blacky, and the three Kanto legendary birds are Freezer, Thunder, and Fire. In that regard it fits in.
I'm here from the space year 2019, and I'm here to break everyone's hearts to inform you that the webpage at 4:33 is from my own site, I made it as an exaggeration of the sort of pages he's reminiscing about. I'm so delighted to think that at least one person actually found that page and thought it was from the 90's.
Who remembers the rumour of giving a Magikarp to the Daycare and keeping it there until it reached level 100? It would then evolve and become Mew when you retrieved it. Yeah, the 90s was a pretty crazy time, and we were all the more gullible for it.
I remember a friend of mine informed me of this very rumor, except he claimed the Magikarp would evolve into Mew at level 50. At least he wasn't lying about how to catch a Kangaskhan 100%.
NIDOGOD AND NIDOLORD the final evolution of the Nidoran family. Must talk to ever character in the game corner in a specific order, 12 times and jingle the lost keys.
A thing you didnt mention is what was used as "proof" to link the pikachu line and Marill together. It wasnt just that Marill kinda looked like Pikachu but actually due to a translation error in the original Red and Blue were on Cinnabar Island a man will trade you his electrode for for your raichu and then if you talk to him he will state that Raichu evolved. This was simply due to the the trade being changed in the localisation of JP Blue, witch became our Red and Blue, but not the associated dialog. In the original the man actually trades his Graveler for your Kadabra
+Amy Rose While I had heard many wondering what Raichu evolved into, I never once heard anyone use that as proof of Pikablu's existence. Maybe you did, but it was NOT a common thing.
+Beffinee I heard them at school, there was also an episode in one of the early series that featured a surfing Pikachu that glowed blue when a big wave approached. that pretty much confirmed that Pikablue was real for the kids in my class
+DareDB Since I'm not quite that old, I hold my nostalgia in the gen 3 rumors. I remember hearing that if Plusle and Minun held certain items, they could be breeded together to create "Neutrus" or "Equas" or whatever. There were similar stories for Latios and Latias (I think it was called "Latius,") and Jirachi and Deoxys for some reason. Then there was Regifire, and Regigas (Not Regigigas.) Then there were the rumors of Rotom, I believe this was shortly before he and Gen 4 had come to the US. You supposedly encountered it extremely rarely in one of the elite 4 rooms if your lead Pokemon held a certain item. Can't remember the details.
+DareDB I was told that if you caught the right Unown in GSC, you could spell out any Pokemon with a name less than six letters by putting them in your party, and they would fuse together to form that Pokemon.
Yeah. I also believed in the Pikablu rumor. Some kid at my school back then said he obtained Pikablu by only having a Raichu and a Pikachu in his party. I think it was something about flying to Vermilion too... Tried it several times ^^
Yeah no you don't... lol I've got the same internet for the last 20 years (hey I'm a cheap guy) and I can barely keep a connection and my verizon telemodem makes my touch tone land line sound like a chainsaw. and no internet at all when it rains! •3•
I turn my hat backwards and shoot my opponent a calculating look, grab my Pokeball firmly, and wind back, throwing the ball with every fiber of passion in my body... Confidently, I shout with a booming, commanding voice as my Pokemon emerges! "I CHOOSE YOU! .... Rainer."
The Rape Face Um, yes I see. I saw it the first time, it's just not funny or accurate. Never to mind the backlash from the fandom that would have happened. Then there's fanfics, plot theories and all kinds of ridiculous crap that would have came with it. Honestly they chose the better name.
I remember hearing of the Poke'Gods back in the late 90s. The names I heard were Sapusaur for Venasaur, Charcolt for Charizard, and Shellshock was for Blastoise instead of Rainer. I also remember doing the game shark codes to get Charcolt. Basically what happened was it leveled the Chjarizard to like 240 or something so its stats were maxed out. It also gave the Charcolt a missing no like sprite made out of charizard bits. It reverted back to a normal Charizard sprite and level 100 when I traded it to gold, but the stats were still maxed.
I COMPLETELY forgot about Pikablu. watching this video, all these memories just came rushing back. reading about it online and talking about it at recess. crazy.
When I was younger and got SoulSilver, I had a Magmar and found out it had another evolution called Magmortar. All my friends told me it evolved at level 100, so I trained it up all the way and nothing happened. I tried every evolution stone I had, and nothing. I never evolved that Magmar. 6 years later and I now know you need to trade it with a magmarizer
+Sandeep Kalsi soulsilver was six years ago? i feel so fucking old.....still never got around to finishing it keep putting it off, and now tis six years later and i am old compared to all the new pokemon fans
+luke V Honestly IMO, Soul Silver was the best remake ever made. The game made catching every legendary an amazing detailed event. I never had a dull moment.
+Sandeep Kalsi The internet was around and thriving during SoulSilver's hayday. XD How did you not just look it up? Especially when what your friends said didn't work? I was watching competitive gen IV battling and using the resources of Smogon before SoulSilver even released! The information was readily available. XD
I actually did some research on the “Pokégods” after watching this video, and I found out that there was one known as “Pikaflare” (guess what it looked like). It turns out that it was actually based on Honōguma (Presumably a portmanteau of 炎[honō], flame, 熊[guma], bear [This kanji is often used in the Japanese names of bear-like animals, such as raccoons, badgers, pandas, etc], and マグマ [maguma], magma). This was the precursor to Cyndaquil, used in the demos of Gold and Silver. What makes this interesting to me is that I’m currently reading a hilariously bad Pokémon fanfic called “the gratest pokemon master” where the main character gets a starter known as Pikafire (which is basically a fusion of Pikachu, Mew, and Honōguma). I found it very amusing that what I thought was just a Mary Sue actually had some basis in actual rumors!
+Redo Liori Weeell, Bellossom is just a portmanteau of the words "belle" meaning a beautiful woman, and "blossom" meaning a flower on a tree or bush. More or less, Bellossom is really just a translation of its Japanese name. Except the name Bellossom gives the message that it's female, when it is not always female. Reminds me of how Mr. Mime's Japanese name is actually Barrierd, and thus makes no reference to gender, explaining why there can be Mr. Mimes who are female.
I remember seeing the rumors of Pikablu back in the day. Eventually, an ad came out stating the little guys' name. And then when Marrill showed up in the first movie, kids in the audience all yelled "PIKABLU!" I was kinda laughing at the whole situation.
I have another one; if you jumped the 3 bumps under the Fuchsia City pokecenter and the gym 100 times you would enter the "world of mew"...this one actually worked though! You would enter a pink corrupted version of the world, quite creepy. I felt like mentioning it because I never read about it anywhere.
+Darkus45 Wow, thanks for the tip. Though I think your numbers were off because I just counted and it actually took 500 times to activate. Boy was it worth it though!
TreckCoyotus they actually were exactly 100 for me and the guy that told me; that's what made it strange. I never did it again to verify its consistency though, as soon as I started walking into that glithed world the game had a reset and I was afraid of savefile corruption.
I remember in the 90s a friend told me Charizard had an evolution called Charzeleon. I still like that name. Oh, and Pikablu came a loong way to Ecuador. My friends here were all excited about that blue pikachu that spoke the whole 1st movie saying "Marill"....
+Melissa Velez I remember Charzeleon... I think one of my big brother's friends had a fake Charzeleon card. He also gave us a bunch of fake Yu-gi-oh cards. Some of them were actually pretty decent quality. I still have no idea how he got those.
My kids are 30 and 24 and were huge in to Pokemon when it hit the US. (My husband and daughter are still playing Pokemon Go!) I definitely remember taking them to see the first Pokemon movie and I remember hearing the stories of Pikablu!
I totally remember the Pikablu myth. I used to think it was going to be an alternate evolution for Pikachu in Gold and Silver, like if you gave it a Water Stone instead of a Thunder Stone.
I work at a school. I still hear kids talk about secret ways to get pokemon, such as if you beat the battle tower 40 times you'll get a free shiny version of whatever pokemon is in your 3rd slot.
I have a theory about the anime. The theory is that Ash was originally going to travel by himself and the was going to battle Brock and Misty much earlier, possibly Brock in episode 2 and Misty in episode 3. This is evidenced by two things: In the episode where Ash battles Brock, Misty is rarely seen onscreen with Ash and is usually up on the second story of the gym. This may be because the episode had already been animated without Misty and she was added in later. And when Ash arrives in Cerulean, Brock mysteriously leaves with no explanation given. It would be an easy to solution to simply animate one new scene with Brock rather than trying to insert him into an already crowded episode.
+Axel Voss he was on his knees in front of officer Jenny, complimenting her and saying that they were destined for each other..like he says to every girl. 😂😂😂 yeah, he isn't getting a girlfriend anytime soon. 😂😂😂
Azumarill is actually really useful, and also one of I think 2 Pokemon who can learn Play Rough. But yeah, having Fairy-type added to the Marill line gave them a huge boost. It's water-type, so it can learn Surf, Dive and Waterfall, which also help it counter Rock, Ground, and Fire, but it also has Play Rough and Fairy-type which makes it good against Dark, Fighting and Dragon. I think, as of Gen. 6, three of my teams have ended up with Azumarill as a core player with just how useful it is. Also yeah, I totally remember Pikablu.
Oh man, I do remember all these urban legends from the Pokemon universe...I don't even know how they spread to the EU. I even straight-up invented some myself, like the legendary poke-fusion professor who would combine two Pokemon to make a new one! That idea actually became reality through the Pokemon Fusion site, which made me pretty happy. I also remember buying some fake-ass cards with ridiculous stats and effects. Ah, those were fun times.
I was in my 2ed year of highschool when the Pikablu rumors were going around. I can't swear by it, but I think the name came from a Chinese bootleg card. If you google 'pikablu 1999 "guest book"' or 'Pikablu 1999 webring' you can actually still find websites with the original rumors on it.
In germany everyone said you can catch this starter fusion thing in this glitchy city xD They also said you can get Togepi there and catch all eevee evolutions (the three ones which were known back then) Good old times xD
this vid is my childhood in its entirety! Sapasaur charcoal and rainer being the last. my heart blew when the pic of the wall with pokemerch went up memories!
I remember urban legends at school (Spanish-speaking country) regarding a "Togepi Valley" on the Gen I games. One of the steps to get there was letting one of your Pokemon die at Lv. 100. Like, not faint and remain with 0 HP, but literally die and disappear from your party completely.
+Arvin Borkar Well you could have your pokemon die, what you had to do is go through the game three times, you'll then unlock insane difficulty that you can pick on a new game. At that point Pokemon don't faint, they die, like permanently. However this only works on the Green version. It was changed when it was brought over to the West because it was thought that Western audiences/children couldn't handle it.
When Pokémon was at its peak growing up, I heard the whole Pikablu thing. I literally told a group of kids. "you DO realize the thing said Marill, right?" They just laughed and told me how stupid I was. Whos the stupid one now! ^w^
Thank you JWittz for successfully making me feel old as dirt for making me remember about this stupid myth from my childhood. Now if you will excuse me I am going to enjoy a nice game of pokemon stadium one using the pokemon I raised in Red, Blue, and Yellow while enjoying a box of pokemon themed poptarts...that will probably kill me for being so old.
***** Well, back in mah day, We had ta go outsad 'n fand sumwun ta battle or trade wit 'n had ta bring our link cable wit us. Now you youngins have this wahfah....
One of my favorite rumors, one that circulated very popularly throughout my school growing was Caterzap. Get a Caterpie up to lv 100, beat the elite 4 with it in your party and then use a thunder stone on it to make it evolve. It would stay looking like a caterpie except for its little antennae which would turn into a lightning bolt shape. Immediately it would change its move set to have thunder, thundershock, thunder wave and (the best part) HYPERBEAM.
I remember having a magazine that showed all the Johto Pokemon and their names in Romaji before they were released in America. I still have it, actually. Some of the names turned out to be slightly inaccurate. I can't remember if it said Pikablu or Marill; I'll have to dig it out..it might have said "Mariru." Around the same time, there was a shop that sold imported anime goods, and I got my hands on some Japanese Pokemon cards. Due to all of this, I ended up learning the Japanese names of the Johto Pokemon first, and would get confused whenever someone used the English names. ^^;
Haha this really took me back. I totally remember Pikablu, and scouring the internet for codes and cheats. There was something cool about the mystery of not just Pokemon, but every video game back then. There were countless rumors of secret levels, unlockable characters etc. These days you can get full walkthroughs before a game is even released. I'm not saying it was better then, but it certainly was a fun time to be a kid.
Amazing. Honestly I feel a little embarrassed to hear all this stuff again. I bought into so much of it. Put countless time into trying to unlock all the dumb secrets. What a great time to be gaming it was.
God, this video was such a nostalgia trip. I remember my friends and I trying for hours on end to do all these tricks and find these "PokeGods". Ah, the blissful ignorance of being a 90s baby when there was almost no internet and you had to find out all this stuff for yourself.
I remember ALL of these. I was in middle school and I was obsessed. I went to all of those geocities and angelfire websites. I TRIED using Gameshark and hacks to get Pikablu on my red game. My group of friends and I were just... really into it. Thing is, we still are. But now we are old enough to know better about rumors. Heh, this video made me feel a lot of nostalgia. Thanks!
i remember being 7 years old and the only kid in school who had the PIKABLU card, it was the late 90s and none of us could read japanese..that set had just come out and i think i got a booster from it as a promo from the first movie( maybe?). everyone wanted to see it obsessively when i was in gradeschool and i even had a little box to carry it in..
I remember stories on how to get Mew and Pikablu back in middle school. Lots of talking in lunchrooms and waiting for the bus to pick us up after school. Those were the days.
MrZurata especially me! I spent YEARS in the 90’s trying to find out what that was. My friends came up with theories of secret evolution, and we even at one point thought if you got all the legendary birds together, you would go into a secret place to fuse them together and get ho oh.
Did you do strange things while trowing a Pokeball at a Pokémon? I used to hold my breath because I consider it that it gives me luck when I trow a Pokeball
+edward davis I tend to push the D-pad or the touch screen because I always did it as a young impressionable kid, the hilarious thing I used to do was say 'gotcha' into the DS mic, that little 'cheat' was all over games websites around 2007-8
+Jimbob32165 the fiddle ...sometimes I still press B and Up when the ball opens. Even in Generation 6 I still do that rumored technique. It's become a reflex at this point.
The house in Canalave City always intrigued me as I couldn't enter it and, as I didn't have a GameShark at the time, I'd spend hours with my friends attempting to get in. Then I realised that the Darkrai event existed and felt like an idiot.
***** Base stat wise, it's technically the worst Hoenn starter stat wise, but he can be made into a good pokemon with some training, and he has the best design in my opinion.
+Fennekchu But he's an amazing special AND physical sweeper, as he is fast and powerful. He is by far the best Hoenn starter, because he can outspeed pretty much anything.
+Hina Face too bad that speed means nothing when it is outclassed in base form and mega form by the other two, since they actually do their job well and have better coverage.
cellgoondude Mega Sceptile is a Dragon Type, may I remind you, which covers a lot of his weaknesses and boosts his power at the same time. Sure, in the original R/S/E, he was by far the weakest, but they buffed him a whole lot in OR/AS, and is on pair with Blaziken for the two best Hoenn starters IMO.
Does anyone else remember hearing about a PokeGod called Rioligity? This one was in Gold/Silver, and the unlocking process involved getting rid of all of your money and items, talking to certain NPCs in a specific order every day for a week, and then answering a call to attend Professor Oak's FUNERAL. Crazy stuff. The only reason I even remember it is the name was so weird, it just stuck in my head. There was also a cheat that I saw around a lot that said if you breed a female Alakazam and a male Meganium, you'd get a Celebi.
+Rachy I remember trying to do the same thing as kid back then. Heck I still nickname Marill as Pikablu and Charmander as Charcoal (guess I always misread Charcolt as Charcoal)
+Rachy When i was in middle school someone convinced me that you could get Mew in Gold/Silver by doing something dumb and then running around in the patch of flowers below Professor Elm's Lab. Regret.
I definitely remember Pikablu. And I searched in vain in Cerulean Cave with my Itemfinder for the Mist Stone. During the days of Red/Blue there were rumors all over the place. At a day camp I went to there were "rare Pokemon cards hidden under some big rocks on the campus."
Alright, here’s the rumour that spread across our schoolyard. So, you had to catch 16 Pikachu and get them to level 16. Then, you had to talk to every NPC in the game and the last one would give you a card. If you used it on your 16th pikachu it would glitch and you would give it a water stone. You would teleport to cerulean cave and it would transform into a Yellow Pikablu, then you used another water stone and it would turn into Pikablu. Don’t know how this came into circulation, soo.
We had the Pikablu rumor on my playgrounds as well as Mewthree, but I had never heard about pokegods before. Interesting. Funny enough the pokemon Golem was once considered fake since no one at my school could figure out how to get him lololol
Link cables were so rare back then that while I knew you needed to trade to get Golem Machamp and Alakazam, they were basically myths, Golem was unique since to my knowledge there isn't any trainer in the whole game that has a Golem, so you couldn't actually see one. Bruno of the Elite 4 has a Machamp and Gary has an Alakazam, and I think Sabrina has one as well.
I remember in 3rd grade (1999 - 2000) hearing the name Pikablu thrown around in exchange in conversation. One of my friends mentioned it. I always imagined it to be a blue Pikachu, but when the 1st Pokemon movie came out, Marill showed up in the short and someone said "There's Pikablu!". Was dissappointing there was no actual Pikablu Pokemon that was the strongest Pokemon ever.
What I found incredible was how many people back then failed to notice Marill's name was said right in the first movie's opening short film. And that there were even pieces of official merchandise calling it friggin' "Pikablu".
I remember all this. I always thought they just called Marill "Pikablu" as a nickname cuz he looked like Pikachu. There was also a rumor saying if you bred a Charizard and Venusaur/Blastoise enough times in G/S you could get a rare hybrid Pokémon. XD And the Ilex Forest rumor where supposedly Celebi was hiding in a tree. And one saying you had to beat the Elite 4 100 times so then Prof. Oak would battle you and give you Mew if you won lol So many crazy stories there were!
The name rainer actually has an origin. There was a glitch pokemon that has the word "Rainer" associated with it. Naturally, it's the word Trainer with the T cut off. It's actually the glitch pokemon PokeWTrainer. The name originates from the game dividing it into two lines with the second one displaying "Rainer". So there's actually reasoning behind the name. It definitely wasn't an evolved Blastoise though. in fact, it has Normal/Ground typing. Also, good luck catching it because encountering it tends to freeze the game. You'll have to transfer its equivlant X Chaisu - x Chaisu from Yellow. A lot of the poke gods were nothing more than glitch pokemon.
Xu- xu, is definitely my favorite glitch pokemon. XD Also PokeWTrainer has insane stats. 980 stat total, I believe. That's better than any other pokemon in existence, including Mega evolutions, Alolan forms, all other alternate forms, and all of the generations, AND other glitches.
I remember one kid at elementary school claiming that a relative of his apparently worked at the pokemon game factory (or something stupidiotic like that), and that he knew tons of things about what the 5th generation would be, because said relative regularly took him to the factory, but with his eyes closed, so that he wouldn't know where it was. I remember recognizing his bull as bull once he mentioned the mascot of the 5th gen games being Pikachu traveling through time and space. EDIT: I forgot to mention that I had full access to the internet, Bulbapedia, and information regarding the first gen 5 pokemon being Zorua and Zoruark. Absolutely nothing about Pikachu traveling through time and space.
I remember rumors back ages ago about evolutions for Nidoking and Nidoqueen. Which we thought were going to be in the next gen games after blue and red versions. Funny enough the names were Nidoking would evolve to Nidogod and Nidoqueen would evolve to Nidofairy. i wonder how many people have also heard about this one ages ago
+Mudkip971 YES THIS EXACTLY, and if you fought gym trainers with the shadow pikachu it said KLD instead of FNTD when you defeated a pokemon and the trainers would get mad at you for killing their pokemon this rumour existed forever and started with the fire red and leaf green games
Pikablu, PokeGods, Mewthree, Armored-Mewtwo, aww man, this hit me with so much nostalgia. Loved the old days where we had no idea what was to come after Red & Blue.
So is the next video gonna be about the Ocarina of Time rumors? Stuff like getting the triforce or unfreezing Zora's Domain were almost as bad as the Pikablu rumors. Hell, I remember Ask Dan even commenting on the rampaging rumors. Speaking of which, he should talk about that fun little column on Nintendo's old site back in the day.
I actually have an idea for canonizing Missingno: Okay, so I have an idea for a region based on California, so it’s obviously going to be very tech-centric. Missingno was an attempt at making a Pokémon using a computer that WASN’T Virtual type (Virtual would be a type i’d introduce in this generation). It kinda worked... but not the way they wanted it to. It would be Normal/Flying, then evolve into Glitchingno (I don’t know how it would do this yet), which would be Virtual/Flying and look like several Missingno formed into the shape of a bird. If you showed either of those to a guy in a specific Pokécenter, they’d give you several Master Balls.
+Michael Aiyedun we were kids we didn't know better hell I remember a kid told me about pikared wich was sapost to be a evelotion to riachu after it got to lvl 200+ i know it is fake now but then i was will it belive anything.
I like Emerald I really do, but the level-grinding above lv 50 is ridiculous, I agree
Ironside998 The sad part was that I had 9 level 100 Pokemon in Sapphire, and 6 More in Leaf Green.
I had way too much time on my hands back then. And a much higher patience for grinding and chasing strange rumors.
I have nearly a box full off pokemon lv100, but most of them got that exp from Mt. Battle in pokemon XD, a few were trained the Emerald way though
When I heard of Pikablu, I heard it as a joke rather than a serious thing. Someone told me "If you painted Raichu blue you could get a Pikablu, but watch out: if it sneezes, it will turn back into Pik- achoo!"
I found that hilarious at the time.
So wholesome
Lol
At the time? That's still pretty good lol
"You really think someone would do that? Just go on the Internet and tell lies?"
-Buster Baxter
_Was._
I'm aware of that xddd
just commented for the lulz
Oh buster... if only you could have saw into the future...
+MysteryMachineX hahahah i remember this one too and yea i use to do it as well, then my gb color got stolen :'(
Even if that rumor was fake, that is the most believe able rumor yet
+MysteryMachineX
I head-butted every single tree in that forest. No lie. Obviously some trees could not be reached, but all the ones I could, I head-butt them. ALL OF THEM.
k9commander lmao
UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. that story hurt me.
Christ. this is so similar to the rumors that would go around my school too, even though nobody had this pikablu it was totally real. Everytime I see a Marril or even an Azzuril in newer games I can't help but have disdain for it.
@@imperatoraugustus9970 in Pokemon Ultra Moon I literally have a Marill named Pikablu because I wanted to say that I have a Pikablu. XD
Oh god I heard that rumor too. Only the the part about the level 99 Raichu in the daycare though. And I believed it lol. good times
team rocket: [nabs a PIKABLU]
I loved the lore in the 90's. So false, yet we clung to so tightly. I remember someone told me that if I caught 6 unknowns, and spelled "C E L E B I" in my party, I could go to the shrine in Ilex Forest and Celebi would attack you. Then, you could catch it with a Masterball easily. I did this, and I was so disappointed.
That actually sounds legitimate compared to what you have to go through to get the Regis in Gen 3.
@@kamoroso94 what do you have to do for the Regis?
@@game84cube the instructions were written in Braille, so you needed a guide or something to even read the instructions. And they were not obvious: using field moves in strange situations and organizing your party in a specific configuration with uncommon Pokémon.
@@kamoroso94 the braille reading guide was in the back of the manual of the games. I have a distant memory of actually finding one of the regis by translating it bit by bit. wild times.
I bought my copy of Ruby used so no instructions. Thank god for the internet. 😄
I always loved that classic rumor in Emerald where, if you talked to the guy at the space station at EXACTLY THE RIGHT TIME, you would take the rocket into space and catch Jirachi and Deoxys.
I remember that one actually..
Oh the good old days..
+gothicMCRgirl I belived every rumor my friends told me about the games/movies. God, I was gullible
I remember something like that too!
"The internet was a very different space in the late 90's and people believed things too easily"
Some things never change, then
TheMusicalBoy'93 Replying a year late! But the difference is that it's also easy to DEBUNK the things people believe in now. The 90s did not have that luxury.

Maybe the people who fell for pokemon rumors are into politics now
To this day, I will always nickname an Azumarill that I train "Pikablu" to keep the legend alive.
+theGreenGoblin I like that idea
+theGreenGoblin or, since it evolves from marill, Raiblu
+William Roche I got a Marill I wanna evolve Nd name this to rival my teapot (raichu)
+theGreenGoblin I knew I wasn't the only one!!!
I have a Marill named Pikablu to keep the legend alive in my games
Rainer? Imagination is dead.
I had only heard about Charcolt. Named my Charmander that as an homage in Pokémon X. Rainer **sad trumpet** is Y. Sapasaur will be in Z.
+Kenshi0909 Actually.... They probably named it after one of the real glitch Pokemon in the game. It's name IS Rainer.... As in T-rainer.
It's missing the T.
+Chaos89P I'm totally naming my charmander that next time i play through gen 6.
+Kenshi0909 To be fair, Umbreon's japanese name is Blacky, and the three Kanto legendary birds are Freezer, Thunder, and Fire. In that regard it fits in.
+Caldera Also, the Japanese names of Jolteon, Vaporeon, and Flareon respectively are Thunders, Showers, and Booster.
My favorite rumor from when I was a kid was that everyone thought that Spinda evolved into Skarmory in RSE xD

That's cool! :3

That is hilarious!

Who remembers the rumour of giving a Magikarp to the Daycare and keeping it there until it reached level 100? It would then evolve and become Mew when you retrieved it.
Yeah, the 90s was a pretty crazy time, and we were all the more gullible for it.
Nice to see YOU here! XD
There is a way to turn Magikarp into mew, but only in the japanese games through select glitches.
I remember a friend of mine informed me of this very rumor, except he claimed the Magikarp would evolve into Mew at level 50. At least he wasn't lying about how to catch a Kangaskhan 100%.
SapphireChao?!
NIDOGOD AND NIDOLORD the final evolution of the Nidoran family. Must talk to ever character in the game corner in a specific order, 12 times and jingle the lost keys.
And throw your gameboy into space while skateboarding on mars.
(note: i wasn't sentient yet in the 90s)
And NIDOGODDES (due to 10 char limit) and NIDOLADY
Oh man, I forgot all about this. Thanks for mentioning it.
Years later....that man was referring to Gorochu.
I guess the Pikablu rumours never spread to the playgrounds of the UK :'D
sadly no

+Beffinee ha it did. I remember it :)
+Beffinee i remember it in the UK same with mentions of pokegods

Oh man, the nostalgia. I was in 6th grade at the time in 1999 and I really believed in Pikablu and the Yoshi evolution.
+DareDB I was told that if you caught the right Unown in GSC, you could spell out any Pokemon with a name less than six letters by putting them in your party, and they would fuse together to form that Pokemon.
is ma best friend a joshi
I was in 5th grade, and I totally bought it, too. I even had my own homestead site, where I copied and pasted these urban legend like they were facts.
Yeah. I also believed in the Pikablu rumor. Some kid at my school back then said he obtained Pikablu by only having a Raichu and a Pikachu in his party. I think it was something about flying to Vermilion too... Tried it several times ^^
Sometimes I wish I was alive back in the 90s with a computer hooked up to the internet.
Yeah no you don't... lol

See?
The Rape Face Um, yes I see. I saw it the first time, it's just not funny or accurate. Never to mind the backlash from the fandom that would have happened. Then there's fanfics, plot theories and all kinds of ridiculous crap that would have came with it. Honestly they chose the better name.
Mika Misame What do you mean accurate?
I remember hearing of the Poke'Gods back in the late 90s. The names I heard were Sapusaur for Venasaur, Charcolt for Charizard, and Shellshock was for Blastoise instead of Rainer. I also remember doing the game shark codes to get Charcolt. Basically what happened was it leveled the Chjarizard to like 240 or something so its stats were maxed out. It also gave the Charcolt a missing no like sprite made out of charizard bits. It reverted back to a normal Charizard sprite and level 100 when I traded it to gold, but the stats were still maxed.
I COMPLETELY forgot about Pikablu. watching this video, all these memories just came rushing back. reading about it online and talking about it at recess. crazy.
OH MY GOD AND on my pikachu's vacation card set. man I miss the nineties
OMG I remember when I was younger about Pikablu , except I would call it Pikaboo ( I was veeeery young when I heard this)
When I was younger and got SoulSilver, I had a Magmar and found out it had another evolution called Magmortar. All my friends told me it evolved at level 100, so I trained it up all the way and nothing happened. I tried every evolution stone I had, and nothing.
I never evolved that Magmar.
6 years later and I now know you need to trade it with a magmarizer
+Sandeep Kalsi well rejoice in the fact you have a level 100 magmortar
+Sandeep Kalsi soulsilver was six years ago? i feel so fucking old.....still never got around to finishing it
keep putting it off, and now tis six years later and i am old compared to all the new pokemon fans
+luke V I feel the same
+luke V Honestly IMO, Soul Silver was the best remake ever made.
XD
I'm very sad he didn't mention Mewthree in this.
+ZerkaiGG they mentioned mewthree in the 1st pokemon movie he totally should have mentioned it.
+ZerkaiGG Mewthree- Uxie
Mewfour - Mesprit
Mewfive - Azelf
I know you've seen the Honest Trailer for Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, right?
+ZerkaiGG I remember hearing about Mewthree around that time. I even remember seeing artwork for it.
Mewsixsixsix.
Can learn every fire type move.
Oh... YOU MEAN HOOPA! XD
That "Rainer"-part was absolutely hilarious :D
6:32 They still didn't spell Snubbull right...
step 7 is hard to do.
Lol
No shit?
It surprises me that Pokemon fans come up with even lamer names than the official company.
Well, we were all just 10-year-olds back then.
+MicManGuy Yeah back then even Seel was better named than what we came up with...
+MicManGuy Excuses...
+Protagonist Nothing gets lamer than Bellossom's Japanese name meaning literally just "Pretty flower."
Piblu
Pikablu
Raiblu
"Jigglypuff viewed from above!"
Okay that's hilarious. +1 for the anime.
In before someone actually tried it.
Robert Parkhurst I would like that; since I only did it once it would be cool to have a confirmation from someone else's cartridge.
8:11 That became real. That's Volcanion.
no that fake
+Herodreamer
Whoa. I didn't even realize their resemblance until you mentioned it. D:
Herodreamer Yeah,it's look like Volcanion that doesn't have it cannon
So if we count Marill being Pikablu, there's been a Pikachu clone for every single Generation.
+DTM1218I don't call them pikachu clones I call them cute
Plusie
Minun
That new x and y electric mouse
Emolga
That white electric squirel shit
+DTM1218 You don't need to count Marill. Those games had Pichu.
+Noah Nesbitt Pichu isn't a clone, it's a pre-evolution of Pikachu
+J De Castro It's still a clone. Filling the criteria of cute electric rodent.
@@arsemonkey2968 you have any pictures of charzeleon? I can't find any on google. What did it look like? I think I've heard of it before somewhere.
2:55 I have never been hit with such a wave of nostalgia. I remember looking at every inch of those pictures before Gold and Silver were released.
I remember all of these things. God my childhood was awesome! :p
Woohooo a wild Pikablu! :D
What about Crystal Onix?
I remember spending hours trying to get one.
+digifreak10101 Yeah, that did always get me. The fuck was he doing that day?

Internet. The internet happened.
+Luke Garcia Yep, and here we are.
I was in my 2ed year of highschool when the Pikablu rumors were going around. I can't swear by it, but I think the name came from a Chinese bootleg card.
If you google 'pikablu 1999 "guest book"' or 'Pikablu 1999 webring' you can actually still find websites with the original rumors on it.
ikr
In germany everyone said you can catch this starter fusion thing in this glitchy city xD They also said you can get Togepi there and catch all eevee evolutions (the three ones which were known back then)
Good old times xD
this vid is my childhood in its entirety!
+Arvin Borkar
Well you could have your pokemon die, what you had to do is go through the game three times, you'll then unlock insane difficulty that you can pick on a new game. At that point Pokemon don't faint, they die, like permanently. However this only works on the Green version. It was changed when it was brought over to the West because it was thought that Western audiences/children couldn't handle it.
So basically a nuzlocke, eh?
dallak93 There was a Togepi Valley in the anime
When Pokémon was at its peak growing up, I heard the whole Pikablu thing. I literally told a group of kids. "you DO realize the thing said Marill, right?" They just laughed and told me how stupid I was. Whos the stupid one now! ^w^
Man I remember when my old brother told me about the pikablu rumor after school. I was blown away.

+GrizzlyAdams94 yeah its almost like its been there for about a year !
I remember having a magazine that showed all the Johto Pokemon and their names in Romaji before they were released in America. I still have it, actually. Some of the names turned out to be slightly inaccurate. I can't remember if it said Pikablu or Marill; I'll have to dig it out..it might have said "Mariru." Around the same time, there was a shop that sold imported anime goods, and I got my hands on some Japanese Pokemon cards. Due to all of this, I ended up learning the Japanese names of the Johto Pokemon first, and would get confused whenever someone used the English names. ^^;
I thought this was one of those false childhood memories that never happened. Thanks for letting me know I'm not crazy!

Thanks!
+Miserybahamut MAN, I remember Pokegods, too. This made my brain explode with memories.
Still trying to use strength on the truck till 2019😂😂
i remember being 7 years old and the only kid in school who had the PIKABLU card, it was the late 90s and none of us could read japanese..that set had just come out and i think i got a booster from it as a promo from the first movie( maybe?). everyone wanted to see it obsessively when i was in gradeschool and i even had a little box to carry it in..
Do you still have it or did you lose it over time?
@@RariYork no idea where it is
@@ph0sgene967 Darn well i hope you manage to find the card again someday ^^
I remember stories on how to get Mew and Pikablu back in middle school. Lots of talking in lunchrooms and waiting for the bus to pick us up after school. Those were the days.
The anime dub fucked everyone up. Ho Oh shows up in the first episode of Pokemon and left everyone going WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT for 5 years
MrZurata But that's why Ho-oh is one of my favorite legendaries. Maybe Rayquaza could top it, but that's about it.
MrZurata especially me! I spent YEARS in the 90’s trying to find out what that was. My friends came up with theories of secret evolution, and we even at one point thought if you got all the legendary birds together, you would go into a secret place to fuse them together and get ho oh.
Does pressing B increase your chances of capturing pokemon?
No, it's just a rumour, but do it all you want if you want to, I used to touch the touch screen every time the ball shook in Pokemon diamond and pearl
Did you do strange things while trowing a Pokeball at a Pokémon? I used to hold my breath because I consider it that it gives me luck when I trow a Pokeball
back when I was like 4 on pokemon firered I spammed the a button since I thought it made pokemon easier to catch
Wait, Blastoise evolves into Jim Raynor?
+Nurse Valentine no but machamp evolves into brock lesner
That's the first thing I thought of, too!
+SuperUnhappyman I believe you mean *JOHN CENA!!!!!!!!!!* evolves into Goro.
Sorry, I just had to do that.
Oh, hello, there you are again.
Who's Jim Raynor?
+Nurse Valentine Seems legit

My favorite rumor from my school is that Sceptile is the best starter.
Ice Shard says whats up hello.
I was convinced you could get Agumon from Digimon in Gold/Silver! I spent hours doing stupid stuff!
+Rachy no offence your dumb
+Rayyan I Farooqui
No offense, you're dumb.
Rayyan I Farooqui Hahaha this was whenever Gold/silver first came to the UK, so yeah I was a gullible 8yr old!
Regret.
I remember looking into poke gods years ago and the funniest one I found was literally called anthrax
Bro what💀
I definitely remember Pikablu.
Great video, as usual. Taking us back to the good old days of the 90's internet. ^_^
It was honestly so much fun to be a Pokémon fan in the late ‘90s/early 2000s. The young fans of today will never understand
So first a video indirectly related to Kirby, then a video indirectly related to Azurilll...
Step 1: Be confused.
Step 2: Look at profile pic.
Step 3: Laugh.
+Calebite Step 5: Profit
+NextLevelGamer step 6- realize that u skipped step 4
+Darkness890 Step 4: ???
Darkness890 step 4 was ???, so i didn't put it, learn the reference
Lets not forget the “Hidden Yoshi” article was released on April Fools day
I remember rumors back ages ago about evolutions for Nidoking and Nidoqueen. Which we thought were going to be in the next gen games after blue and red versions. Funny enough the names were Nidoking would evolve to Nidogod and Nidoqueen would evolve to Nidofairy. i wonder how many people have also heard about this one ages ago
I mean...Sapusaur actually sounds kinda cool...
Around the early 2000 (Around Gen 3) my school and people living around my parts had a rumor about a Shadow Pikachu. Did it happen anywhere else?
nope
+AZYoshi_ makes you wonder how they thought of shadow pokemon in colloseum in the third generation.
+Mudkip971 YES THIS EXACTLY, and if you fought gym trainers with the shadow pikachu it said KLD instead of FNTD when you defeated a pokemon and the trainers would get mad at you for killing their pokemon
this rumour existed forever and started with the fire red and leaf green games
+Jack Carroll yep
+luke V The rumor started with FR/LG? Interesting, considering Pokemon Colosseum came out BEFORE FR/LG.
Is hoppip your favorite pokemon?
+Adrian Bigno From his top ten, Hoppip is his second favourite being beaten by only Ditto.
Why so Pika Blue?
+Michael Aiyedun Because creativity amongst children was obviously overflowing from their heads.
+Michael Aiyedun HA!
that just left me so blue
because pika blue die de dum
+Michael Aiyedun we were kids we didn't know better hell I remember a kid told me about pikared wich was sapost to be a evelotion to riachu after it got to lvl 200+ i know it is fake now but then i was will it belive anything.
