Endura Flap Pet Door Installation
In a perfect world my two Labrador pups would let themselves in and out of the house as needed - and make their own dinner!
Although we don't live in a perfect world that doesn't mean we don't strive for greater efficiency and better solutions. My search for this led me to installing a pet door. In this article I offer you my thoughts and tips on how to choose, measure for and install a quality pet door.
What's a pet door?
A pet door, also known as a cat door and dog door, is a small portal in a wall, window or door to allow pets to enter and exit a house on their own.
The value of a pet door:
These doors are great for allowing your pet free access to the outdoors, providing emergency egress in case of a fire or other emergency, assisting when potty training and also allowing guard dogs access to the property.
It's also a great feature for pet owners who work long hours and want their pets to have free access to a fenced in yard or other location. A pet door eliminates the need to rely on neighbors or friends to let your pet out.
Types of Pet Doors?
Today's pet doors have spring loaded, flexible flap doors with strong magnets to close and seal the door flap from the weather. Some pet doors are electronically controlled by a Rfid chip on the animals collar. The Rfid chip unlocks the pet door as the animal approaches and locks it after they pass through.
The most common pet door is the flap door which is also the most cost effective and easiest to install.
Features To Consider When Purchasing A Pet Door
Our research told us that the Edura FlapWall Mounted Pet Door was the better quality door to install and best for our needs.
We used several criteria when deciding on a pet door manufacturer. They were:
Flexible flap Design:
A flexible flap door allows the pet to enter, exit or back out without the danger of pinching the animal.
Magnets:
Embedded magnets in the flap and frame of the pet door ensure a tight seal.
Double Flap Feature:
A double flap pet door creates an air space that helps insulate and keep the conditioned air in the house. We felt that the double flap doors in our 2x6 framed walls would be beneficial for New England winters as well as when the AC is on in July.
Flap pivot point:
The flaps swing on a rod, not a hinge to avoid stressing or cracking the flap as can happen on hinged flaps. Endura tested their pet doors over 3 million times with no failures. To put that in layman's terms that equals 100 opens and closes a day for 80 years. (We'd love to see their testing jig!)
Wind Resistance:
A strong wind or Nor'easter can easily blow open a pet door. Endura Flap magnets are rated to 50 mph winds and more magnets can be added if desired.
Temperature Resistance and UV Retardant:
The endure flap door is made of a polyolethin based polymer and is rated to flex to minus 40 degrees. Vinyl doors will crack at temperatures that low. Direct sunlight can also cause fading and cracking: the Endura flap door is treated with a UV retardant.
Clear See-Thru Door:
The pet door flaps are clear (contrasting between the wall and the door) and allowing light to pass through and the pet to see through as well.
Security panel:
Most pet doors have a security panel to close off and lock the pet door. We liked how the Endura Flap door slides and locks between a full length groove on three sides of the frame. The security panel then locks in place. We do this at night for added security as well as to reduce heat loss.

Hey Rob...thanks for the vid. It was great. I'm going to be installing a dog door, and was aware that they had the template for cutting through the house. What impressed me about your vid was the small things you mentioned that would tend to raise their head in the middle of the project and bite you in the ass. For instance, the height placement, wires in the wall, finding the studs, making the step for the height differential, recessing the door frame for a nice finish. All those things make a big difference. Thanks for your pro insight and little secrets. Kindest regards!
***** Glad to help!
let us know how your project goes!
Jason Bradley thanks Jason- did yo install that door?
The perfect models!!! ❤
like the idea of the closet that was real good idea
I cAn do most anything around my house but I hate siding. You sir are good enough to make me attempt this.
+Richard Recupero How'd it go?
Couldn't make it happen. The only place to put it was below a triple gang box and I didn't plan on rewiring my entire house for a little issue like that. Some day I'll figure out a fix
+Richard Recupero Is it realistic to have an electrician relocate??
Yes but not cost effective or worth the time and effort. My dog will just have to live with having a door man.
What about moving the outlet up in the wall - if the wire allows.
great review, certainly covers many areas of consideration that I may have otherwise overlooked
Well, you said at night you have to close it. Then the electronic one is better because you can make it close at whatever time you want and it will automatic do that.
Great video. That door is a lot nicer then one I had to install a few years ago through brick and stuco.
Thanks - check out the website - they have all shapes and sizes
Thanks for your very good video and research, we are getting tired of using one in a sliding door and winter time its tuff to keep cool air out, plus we can't use the door unless we take out the doggie door, on and on and on just a pain I know it would be so much easier having what you have and we have the fenced in yard so its good for animals come and go...
+RickKennedyFilms If you have a location for it - you wont regret doing it!
Very we'll put together video and input! Thanks.
thanks!
Nice video. I'm going to build one myself for my dog, now thanks to this video I know what to do. Thanks
+Najadahe Davila Did you do it?
+A Concord Carpenter. yes I did. Thanks for the tips buddy.
Great video it's very helpful, thanks for posting
thanks
SOOOO much good information, thank you!
Nicely done. Very well thought out.
Will thank you
Sounds great! I'm gonna do it for my cat
I like this guy.
Do they make these things big enough for miniature horses?
YOU got a new subscriber. Great vid.
Thanks Cody. If you enjoy tool reviews I do a lot of them over here: th-cam.com/users/ToolBoxBuzz
that's amazing. might have to consider these for my monster.
Love it!
i need such a door ..but is has to be inserted into a security door. back door is to the back yard. wall is the driveway side, other wall is the main wall to bedroom which is blocked by a washer and dryer only option is the security door. i will have to cut the bar reweld frame in the dog door.. which is the correct door for my dog? i have a beautiful bull terrier female and the smaller of the breed. but still big .its the target dog or spuds McKenzie
....ty tony
Thanks man!....I made my mind up on adoggy door..how much it cost btw
I read quotes by several people that the template did not line up with the actual layout of the door, and that while people loved this door, it was really difficult to install.
+Paul Kiskis Im a carpenter, it was super easy to install, hire someone if your not sure what to do
Will it also keep away the thieves and snakes away?!
Mei Li Y yes for snakes because it’s elevated and unless the thief has anorexia then yes
Is this the original endura flap or the E2 version (I don’t know the difference) and how’s it holding up after this many years?
Still worked great my pup is 14
Can you show how to do the same thing but with a brick outside wall? Also, do you ever get "other" animals inside the house? (lizards, snakes, bugs, etc.) And, what do you recommend for people with different size dogs, I have a toy poodle but also two pitbulls. Thank you.
Tanyaext92@gmail.com Samnsteve1 I don't currently have a brick application. No - never had animals - the double pet doors helps
Silver Lab and a Pit / Lab mix
What size door is that one you installed?
8 x 16
Great vid! just wondering, what breed are your dogs?
Great Video!
We have siding on our house what do we do first for it.?
siding is not a concern - its whats on the inside or the housewalls [radiators, etc] and inside the wall cavity that matters
I love this! Thanks for all the info, I've been looking for something like this.
@ciaran o'sullivan thx!
Yes they have doors to fit a German Shephard
A Concord Carpenter just sent you a question on your website, as it was a little long to explain here. Please help me with my door problem!!!
I'll look for it. You can email me here robertrobillard@comcast.net

Elliot - that opening size is 8 x 16
Endura Flap Pet Door Installation
Hi it looks like your dogs have an electric collar?
Bark collars - we have a barker
can you please tell me how is this door working for you? I am looking to install one and liked your video
thanks
Been a full year and still works amazing!! No issues
+A Concord Carpenter almost 2 years now - still good
Have you had to replace the flaps since installing your dog door? How did it hold up in winter weather? Since it has been a while since you installed the Endura Flap Pet Door, do you still consider this brand the best choice to purchase now?
no
do they have ne for a door
It is a great
what do you call this model that I can buy for my rabbit, :p
Nice door..... but not $400 nice... btw you did a great job explaining the door.
Bill Brown 7 years later, 2 dogs 🐕 using it constant,y = zero issues. That’s $57.00 a year which I think is well worth it. #YouGetWhatYouPayFor
Can you get the door in different sizes?
yes, several
Pet Door
how much is this door and where can I purchase it. in person
I think 200ish
A Concord Carpenter / ToolBoxBuzz would also like to know as the ones on eBay are $500 a lot more than $200 any links to where we can get them
Installing a Pet Door
What kind of dogs are those?
Silver lab and a lab mix
Door looks great but $629 is INSANE!!!
Why use the security panel? I bet someone could kick that in pretty easy if they wanted to and the dog might have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night? Anyway, nice vid. Thx
Its a deterrent and keeps other critters out too. Locks and most doors keep honest people out. Someone could kick that panel in as easy as my back door could be kicked in or defeated with a flat pry bar at the jamb / deadbolt. Or any double hung window with a flat bar.
ok I see, thanks for the reply. cheers
Aren't you afraid if someone gets into house and steals some stuff ?
Thats what the dogs and my 9mm are for
@@ConcordCarpenter haha, what of they slow down your dogs when you're not at home?
What about other animals, can they get in ? Raccoons, rats, squirrels?
E Cirlos Definitely raccoons if they tried. My house is fenced in with 2 female dog which I this is a scent deterrent to the other animals. Plus I can secure this door if needed
I fucking love dogs
Great info on the flap. Waste of time in showing how to install it....which is the title of the video?
James Levio sorry to disappoint
Video is okay, did you get paid by endura pet doors. You really did not show how to install a doggie door. Tittle should be endura pet door review.
I worry about bugs
I was excited until I found out it costs $450+ dollars....ridiculous pricing.
thedhbusiness don't be so quick to judge price I installed that back in 2008, two dogs use that continuously every day I have not had to do one thing to it. You get what you pay for sometimes this pet door is quality
I have no doubt of the quality of the product - I just don't know if it's worth me paying such a high price for it.
should of been called how to choose door and location
Good point - thanks for the feedback!
$500 might as well buy the automatic pet door 😅🙄
except thats even more money
Burglar flap. C'mon in!
Excellent way to destroy the value of your house. Wonder what it would cost to have it removed and put back to normal?
Over priced junk. I'd get a JGM Pet Door or a Hale Pet Door. I know, I install pet doors for a living.
HGAviator I disagree, I’ve had this door for 4 years (2dogs) with zero issues. This is a high quality door that I highly recommend
Can you get the door in different sizes?
yup
A Concord Carpenter ok I was looking for one for German shepherd
Yes
Thanks for video. Viewers should be aware that this video is mostly a pitch for a particular brand dog door , and the installation instructions at the end are quite abbreviated.
Nice video thank you! But I can't believe your dogs are not Texas Blue Lacys. They have the same coloring, markings, even the color of their eyes. Gorgeous!
+Addie Pray Thanks! A silver lab and a mix rescue
How did you anchor it into the wall? Also, did you insulate the hole in your wall before you installed the pet door?
Ms Tirrie I added a top and bottom 2 x 4 for nailing the pet door screws thru the jam with screws in the wall. The wall was already insulated so I had to just remove the insulation to install the door
How do you know where there are no pipes and wires?
Deb McCafferty We look for outlets and the obvious signs, after that an inspection hole with an inspection camera or simply cut the opening and relocate the wires. Pipes usually do not run thru exterior walls in cold regions.
