    I kinda did like arc 3, but I do agree with the fact that Wasp was somewhat written off. Cottonmouth was a bit of an: “oh this guy exists now?”
    I agree, they should have hinted at it, maybe in the poison jungle, or perhaps in Cricket’s book
    I also would have liked to see Lizard/Freedom more. They should’ve also hinted at her WAY more

    Truth is, I actually really enjoyed Arc 3 the most due to it doing so many things right (with the exception of Book 15), like Tui had fully learned from her mistakes of its predecessors. The brand new settings is a breath of fresh air, all the protagonists are fantastic and preserve their character development, none of the antagonists overstay their welcome, every new romance is genuine, the plot is executed phenomenally, the story keeps a very steady pace throughout without getting too slow or too fast, there’s a perfect balance of dark and goofy moments, and there isn’t an overpowered magic system that piles up plot holes. I have a strongly negative view towards Book 15, but it doesn’t change how phenomenal Books 11-14 are in my eyes.

      book 14 was probably my favourite.
      Although being a filler which making the book kind of useless for the problem in the whole arc, it was interesting and it introduced the story of jerboa, snowfall also developed more sympathy which would have a good effect on the tribe later. They do still have the problems of the other mind but at least they got to figure a way to stop it. overall, great book even though its a filler.

      I agree, the third arc, though not my favourite, was pretty good. I really liked book 13 and I absolutely love freedom. I have to admit book 14 was a little boring in some parts but it was still good. The new setting was cool and blicket is a good ship along with sunlow. The characters are good but I do feel that some of them have the exact same personality as some arc one characters. Sundew and Tsunami are pretty similar and so are Clay and Swordtail.

    It's sad because, in my opinion, the actual style and writing is perfect. I think in books 14 and 15 it's the best it's ever been in Wings of Fire - I think Tui's really good at dialogue especially, and I'm always having such a great time reading whenever my favourite characters are "onscreen". However the plot and story is really muddled and has tons and tons of problems, which I think you addressed beautifully in this video!

  • @ChaoticWatcher
    @ChaoticWatcher ปีที่แล้ว +42

    I can see what you mean, and I kinda agree, but I do really like book 15, as it adds to the history, we now know what the scorching is, as it's mentioned alot but we never knew what it was, and book 14 was nice to have, so the dragons are moving closer to a peaceful day and age, with a new continent, it was nice to have a breather, and she mightve genuinely not known where she wanted to take the ending from 13, so she wrote 14 instead

    • @jacquelinehill1038

    Should’ve stopped writing arcs after book 10. Pls write winglets and legends. That’s all I gotta say for Tui 🤣 She’s an amazing writer and the first two arcs were absolutely incredible, but I do agree that arc 3 was a bit of a letdown which sadly had a lot of potential. It is understandable to have creative burnout and a want for something brand new. I hope Tui makes more books in the future about Wings of Fire answering our questions and mysteries about the first 2 arcs!
    Have a good day Cyprus! ❤

    I agree that the 3rd arc was meh, but the thing I really found interesting was how the story felt like it was based on the story of Chief Sequoia, a Native American chief who was kicked out of his land and forced to “protected land” by the Colonizers. In the sense of comparing the two stories, the Leafwings are the Native Americans, the Hivewings are the colonizers and the Silkwings are very vaguely Africans. The main reason I was so unhappy with the 3rd arc is that she had it based off this story, and then just blew it up with the hivemind and cottonmouth. Now technically you could say the ending represents where we are now, with all the tribes being equal, but the way she got there made me unhappy. It was like, oh yeah these random dragons are gonna go make everything okay, hooray, but it just differs so much from the story she based it on, like if your gonna make it based on a true story, make the rest of the arc realistic-ish at least!

    I honestly just feel like Tui had way more time to plan out the first two arcs but not the 3rd. I hope if she continues the series, she’ll take a huge break before to plan out everything and then write the books so they’ll have that same magical feeling the first two arcs had. Although this comment doesn’t have much details to my theory, hopefully the people who read this will understand what I mean.
    I also feel that killing off Freedom was the wrong decision. The poor dragonet deserved to live a life and have her own memories, and feel it was giving a bad message or not the message Tui intended to send to the readers. I would have felt a little better if somehow Luna found a way to give Freedom a life or at least give her something.
    Anyways, no hate to Tui, I defiantly enjoyed some parts of arc 3 but I felt it could have been so much better and have a more satisfying ending like the rest of her books. I hope her next novels (if she makes any) will be just like her previous ones before arc 3.

    with "do you think tui will write anything more within wings of fire", I really hope she writes a book based on Umber and a book based on Sora. It would be pretty cool to see stories based on these two mudwings. Sora has an. . . interesting personality, and it would be interesting to see more into her character. and i'd love to see something based on Umber, he also seems interesting. I understand that Kinkajou won't get her own book, which is fine! her character's perfect. But seeing something based on Umber and Sora would be quite good to read. Maybe Tui could even write a book based on Clay's siblings in the way she wrote Darkstalker or Dragonslayer- each chapter based on a different dragon. It just seems like an interesting idea!

    I honestly LOVED some of the third arc, but... SOME of it. I wasn't too crazy about book 11 when it was released, but Cricket and Sundew's were probably in my top three favorite books for the entire series! (as well as book 10) They had such WONDERFUL character development and plot lines, with fascinating scenery and dialogue to boot. They were just FUN to read, and they're the two books that I look forward to the most whenever I reread the series. I just wish Tui would've planned a better ending!! Cottonmouth and Freedom came out of nowhere, and even though there was some suspense behind WHO the other mind was, I feel like it could've just been played out in such a more interesting way. Like, maybe by having the reveal as a character(s) who we already knew and actually cared about. When the entire ending of potentially ALL of WoF as we KNEW it was wrapped around an insignificant dragonet and a random human who we'd JUST MET... idk it just kinda ruined it for me. But yeah, it's nice to see other people agreeing and sort of bonding over their/our opinions on arc three! Thanks Cyprus :))

    I did enjoy arc 3, but you do make a lot of amazing points, Cyprus! As a writer myself also, stories can remain unfinished, unused, terrible, amazing, or just… done. We gotta accept that we can’t finish everything and new things always come up. I love Tui T Sutherland too, but I will agree that I think the Wings of Fire series is done, no matter how much I want it to go on. The 15th book was amazing, but we were introduced to millions of new characters for five minutes, and then it was taken away. I still love all of them and hope they come back one day, but as side stories. Three arcs is A LOT, and it’s hard to make everything fit together into one. Sometimes it clicks, sometimes it doesn’t. But I love your videos and art, Cyprus, they were beautiful and amazing. ❤

    I always find it interesting and love the part about the Book of Clearsight. It’s held as a holy relic and Clearsight was revered like a goddess, only for the main characters to find out that the claim of the book choosing Wasp to rule everything was a lie, concluding that Wasp manipulated the masses under the guise of “God told me trust me,” which hits very close to home because people throughout history have tried to manipulate everyone around them by weaponizing the religious faith. I had trouble keeping track with what is there and what isn’t when Luna confronted Lizard that I definitely am gonna need a graphic novel to figure it out (which is probably gonna take a decade to get to Book 15 :’) ). Not a fan with how fast the epilogue played out because racism doesn’t end so fast that easily and yet it’s treated like “yeah there’s gonna be complaints but whatever.”

    Arc 3 was nice (I quite like the characters and the new tribes) though yeah, they should've hinted a bit more at Cottonmouth and Freedom/Lizard.
    If Tui would continue WOF, and I do hope she does, I would say do a spinoff of some sort about humans (I know its got nothing to really do about the proper storyline but just keep reading).
    If you've read Dragonslayer (I'll try not to spoil much), at the very end it's like he's going to come after Wren. I would LOVE to see a part about that, and it would be different from the main Wings of Fire arcs because its about humans (this could work if she needed a break about dragons). A book like this could also show how dragons are stopping to eat scavengers/humans, or some rebellious dragon is still eating them or something.
    Just an idea, but I really would like a conclusion to Dragonslayer because the ending is a cliffhanger.

    Book 11 and 12 is pretty good, build up the world of Pentala and how the dragons there lived.
    Book 13 was kinda good with a good twist.
    Book 14 is a filler book of a princess having different personalities.
    And Book 15 feels rushed.
    I liked the backstory of how the Scorching started but it still, feels weird and some of the parts felt skipped or felt confused on some parts of the story.

    6:18 “You’ve got to know when to stop.”
    Very true. But try telling that to Erin Hunter! Warriors has been going on for 20 whole years, and I’m only what, the 6th arc? After arc 4, it doesn’t seem that much worth reading anymore, especially because the main character since the FIRST BOOK died. (Sorry if that’s a spoiler). Sometimes, you’ve got to know when to stop, and in this case, maybe they just should’ve stopped after arc 4, and not continued on to an arc 8 that’s still in the making. We all want more… but writers have to know when to stop. I don’t think Warriors needs 8 arcs with like, 16 Super Editions, and like 15 more novellas and 10 graphic novels. The newer characters aren’t that good, I feel like I’m reading the last book in the 6th arc just because of one character. And another thing: the problem isn’t really pointed out all that clearly. In arc 1, the villain is introduced in the first book. He plays a role the whole time, so that’s really enjoyable, right? But then a random villain just gets introduced in the last book of the arc and murders cats. That’s kind of like Cottonmouth/the Othermind. In that case, it worked, but it didn’t really work in WoF. My favorite villain in WoF is, guess what, Scarlet. The original villain. My favorite character is a dragon introduced in book five: Qibli. As you can see, the newer characters aren’t my favorite. Kink is my fav side character, and she came into the story in book 3. Writers seriously need to know when to stop. And how to actually introduce their villains and make it a bit clear on who the hell is the actual villain. Congrats if you read all that 🎉🎉.

    Honestly I agree that sometimes you need to take a step back from franchises and it wouldn't be a bad idea for her to step back for a while and focus on something else and then return to Wings of Fire with his fresh ideas and a burnt out with the series. But honestly I really did enjoy it arc3 characters and I loved Book 15 and honestly it's probably one of my favorites I love it for all the reasons that people seem to hate it it wasn't super fast nor was it incredibly slow it explored different ideas in parts of the story that we had little-to-no information about and frankly I don't mind their being more negotiations and governmental politics being funded Wings of Fire that honestly makes things a bit more interesting to me. And honestly I know you say that book 10 was so great but honestly I was very disappointed with the ending of that book in complete contrast to everyone else it's ending sucked especially if you're a fan of darkstalker like me with turn him into Peacemaker you look more like a cop-out than an actual ending he should have gotten was an actual redemption arc which is what I would love to see but even if you don't want to go that Avenue the writing for that entire scene was still bought and it felt awful and totally hypocritical of the entire message up to that point of don't change dragons into something they're not but how are they going to solve the big bad problem by doing the exact thing they're telling him he's doing wrong. Honestly I didn't hate book 10 but it's ending left a very sour taste in my mouth where is Buck 15 did exact opposite it felt very inspirational and good and left an open-end for more books and more possibilities to explore more of the situation and relationships between scavengers and Dragons.

    I didn’t mind arc 3, the only thing that kept making me want to read book 15 is the fact that Lynx and Qibli were there. This is off topic but Lynx is underrated in my opinion. Book 15 was really messy, but it was really interesting that they told us the story of the scorching, even if it was very off topic. Wasp was a good villain, but at book 15, it was just like ‘ok, so wasp, you aren’t important anymore’, and they just threw her away. About your point on book 10 being the end of the series. Tui didn't know that it would be received as well as it was. Yes qibli was already liked but book 10 definitely made a lot more people like him a lot more. If Tui has known that book 10 was going to be so popular I don't think she would have included the epilog part where the 3rd arc is set up. I don't know for sure but I think the reason arc 3 wasn't as good as the other arcs was because of stress. I write sometimes and I sometimes share that with my friends. One time my story was very well received and I tried to follow it up. It was like my writing skill regressed 2 or 3 years and I could barely write. Point is that when you write something great and have to follow it up it seems to be a trend to trip while trying to and fail. Star wars did it, I think game of thrones did it but I never watched that, and I do it so I don't see why Tui wouldn't have

    4:01 I completely agree. I never finished book 15 because I just kept getting lost and confused. Like, in the beginning, the dragons are flying to second continent ( I forgot the name😅),then some get captured, then the rest end up in a cave with the free silk wings, and then Luna falls down this like, thing where cottenmouth, a character we don even know, is. Tui tries to explain his back story, but it just doesn’t make sense in my head why he was the villain all along. Like I said, I never finished it, so I don’t know if Luna escapes or anything, and I’m open to ‘spoilers’. The third arc just had so much potential, and one of the reasons I picked up the very first book in the series, was to get to book 11 (I think it’s 11, the lost continent is what I’m talking about) because I thought Blue looked so cool. I had never seen a dragon design like that. Over all, the 3rd arc was just ok at best for me. Nothing special or out of the ordinary, but nothing bad that I hated either.
    Edit: dang that’s long

    If Tui is feeling burn out from WOF she might want to leave it alone for few months to a few years then look at it again with fresh eyes if she feels she wants to make another arc then she can start wrighting it if she still feels drained when she revisits she can take another few months or years away from it if she desided s its donw then well its done. Cant exactly force the wrighter to make another book series

    This is speculation, but to me it seems like during arc 3 there was a major rewrite and change of direction following book 12. I've seen others suggest it as well, and it would explain why there is almost no foreshadowing for things like Cottonmouth, the lack of payoff for a lot of the planting in 11 and 12, why 14 ended up being filler, and why all 5 books feel so disconnected.

    I personally love Arc 3, but i do admit that Cottonmouth sort of came out of nowhere, we could have had more experience with him in other books and that would have made book 15 that much better. I think Tui just wanted Cottommouth in there at somepoint, but just threw him in at the end because she had nowhere else to put him. However, I do like the concept of Lizard. All in all, the 3rd ark was really good, it just needed a little more looking over before it got written completely!

    I really liked arc 3, but I understand if you had issues you wanted to talk about it. But I loved the sudden plot twists and the long drawn out horror of what Luna was going through. The only thing I have a problem with, is the ending. There is SO much more potential left with the way arc three ended, more of things getting fixed and settled, maybe the lives of younger dragons living with the new world, when our protagonists are older. Idk, but I quite enjoyed it.

    I think one thing could easily fix this: book 13 had the climax, leaving book 14 with mostly nowhere to go. Between books 12 and 13 something else should have raised the stakes, letting the poison jungle heighten the tension, and relegating the negotiations and logistics to prologues and epilogues.
    Another thing that could help is that Book 15 should have used more characters we’d seen before but that were more subdued personalities. pineapple and bullfrog were mostly extraneous. I’d probably pick Liana and Reed for those roles, adding major sass and a steady anchor, with characters that could easily fade into the background when needed. I’d choose Winter, a more subdued outclaw (six-claws, anyone?), sky, reed, pike, liana, and moon: that way we have characters that provide a background and aren’t as flashy, leaving Luna and perhaps someone else like Sky to shine without that muddled mess of characters behind them.

    I liked that we got more insight on The Scorching since they always talk about it but us as the readers know absolutely nothing
    I just did not want scavengers as a part of this story, at least, not as plot points and main characters outside of Dragonslayer

    I think she should leave the series where it is with the exception of maybe one final special book (like Dragonslayer and Darkstalker) set in the future. Teh previous two legends were set in the past that shed light on how the continent came to be, and I think it would be great to have one give us a view of the world the dragonets from both coninents have worked so hard for. We saw a snippit of what Jade Mountain Acadamy could look like, but what of the kingdoms? Do the Silkwings learn how to govern themselves properly, or are they allowing perhaps the Rainwings to step in? The kingdoms are now intermingling and cross breeding, which has already starrted giving us some intresting combinations and I would love to see more and if they are unrecongizable to the current style and more reminiscent of the dragons before the Scorching. Are they even still kingdoms, or have they gone the route Avatar the Last Airbender did?
    I don't remember, did it ever mention how the dragons made it to the Lost Continent to begin with? How exactly did the dragons become the way they are? I would personally love a legend book as if Starflight or Cricket wrote out the histories of the world. With an updated guide. It was really frustrating when a new development happened and he next book didn't update the stuff. I understand why, but still.
    Like you said, there was so much that was tied up and finished neatly with book 10, but there was also a lot of stuff i would have liked to see filled out more ( such as Peacemaker). So maybe two more legend books, one for a history lesson by Starflight/Cricket and one set a couple hundred years into the future to see how everything turned out. But thats only my opinion.

  • @Frostbite961
    @Frostbite961 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As much as I love Sundew and Snowfall.... I agree. The third arc is a mess. What really started the fall in my opinion is a character (Snowfall) who is completely discounted from the entire story! Snowfall was used as a plot device. "Oh the hive mind dragons captured the other two good guys left on the continent." If you ask me it could have been better if we had no idea what happened on Pantala after the Leafwings, and some Silkwings, and two Hivewings left. That way when the stealth team arrived in Pantala it would be a shock factor that there were more Silkwings and Leafwings under the Hive mind then they thought. Or (if we stick to the Snowfall POV, and her lesson with the ring of vision) have some of the flashbacks set up Cottonmouth and Lizard/Freedom and make Wasp still part of the main bad force by having her closely communicate with Cottonmouth. Now I love Wings of Fire and Tui's writing a lot. This is in no way a rant about how bad it is. It is simply my opinion on how to change the story a little bit to set up better for book 15. But it's still amazing Tui has written these books for 10 whole years! That's some dedication.

    the first two books of arc 3 were good, but the 1st and 2nd arc were defiantly the best. it would have been so much better if Tui left Hawthorn (even though he's awesome) and Cottonmouth just as normal characters. Cottonmouth could be excluded from the whole story and Wasp could have been the tie to who the villain was?

  • @wingdingthing07
    @wingdingthing07 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Totally agree.
    If Tui had done something like have a little dialogue from Lizard/Freedom in the epilogues of each book, it wouldn't feel like an out-of-nowhere twist. It also would've been cool if Snowfall had a winglet instead of her own book, because that was incredibly distracting. I was a bit disoriented when reading TFOH because of that. xD
    Along with some other new things I didn't agree with, I didn't really connect to any of the POV protagonists. I liked Blue's book because it was a nice change from the typical warrior-rebel protag in these kind of books; he didn't want any change at all. Cricket's character was kind of flat. Sundew felt like one of those Transformers toys that are repainted and sold as a different character. Give me Murder Fish over Angst Leaf any day! Snowfall and Luna felt the same. And there where WAY too many scavengers. Bumblebee, however cute, felt like the obligatory "baby" character that's in everything right now. I think arc 3 had some cool scenes in it, but it didn't satisfy.
    I know this is a looong comment, but I'm glad someone else feels the same way. xD
