Well most of the popular songs that are on the mainstream radio are written by only handful of writers so they all go by a simple formula. It's a shame there is very little deviation in mainstream music.

I love, love, love this song, originally released in 1972 when I was just a baby. This is definitely a classic that's been redone several times. One of the best remakes is from Paul Young in 1990. Paul Young is a blue-eyed soul singer from England and he also had a huge hit with a remake of the Hall and Oates' song "Everytime You Go Away"!

I always loved this song, but once I paid more attention to it a few years ago, I realized that I had always been liking Chi-Lite songs. I just hadn't realized that it was them all along.
Love R&B, although I wasn't raised on it. Picked up on it as a teenager watching TV commercials in the 80s for Greatest Hits albums. Much of it I'd heard over the years, but hadn't specifically thought about it before.

You are on a roll tonight! The Chilites were a great ‘last dance’ band. Homely girl, Have you seen her and the brilliant Time for love, which showed off their vocal range and should definitely be your next reaction. The band’s songs were always a fixture on the mixed tapes of my youth, when it was required of your boyfriend to present you with a tape of your favourite tracks, taken from a record if you were lucky and the radio if you weren’t! This kind of R&B was well represented in the 70’s and there’s a lot of great stuff out there, The Stylistics, Detroit Spinners, Ronnie Dyson etc. They should keep you going for a while.😎

This is one of those songs that transcends time, race, ethnicity, because it don’t matter if you’re white, black, Latino, Christian, Jew, Muslim, rich, poor, or middle class, I mean none of that matters, because as men we’ve all been through the kind of hurt that only loosing the woman you love can put on your heart. I lost my first girlfriend right about the time this tune came out. And I’m telling you, man, truer words were never spoken. A great classic. Thanks for that one!

  • @russallert

"Back In The Day" (as the kids like to say), I had this song on a K-Tel compilation album - which tells you how old I am right there. K-Tel was a record company that compiled recent Top 40 hits onto a single vinyl album and advertised them on TV. "22 ORIGINAL HITS!!! 22 ORIGINAL STARS!!!" Of course, how they got those 22 original hits by the 22 original stars onto one 12 inch vinyl LP was to edit the crap out of them (usually down to 2 to 2.5 minutes) and then suck the bottom end out of the mix, so that it resembled the sound of mono AM radio, and also made it possible to master (a technical term) the record in order to fit 11 songs onto each side of the record (less bass meant narrower grooves). In any case, that's how I heard the very treble-sounding and ruthlessly edited 2.5 minute version of this song when I was a kid - and I still liked it. I didn't even know who The Chi Lites were (white guy in Canada speaking), or whether they were black or white or chartreuse, but I just liked the sound of the whole thing - and that harmonica hook got peoples' attention, as all good hooks do, even though it was never repeated again during the song. That's a brilliant pop record, no mater what the era.

Fast forward 10 years-- I was riding with my mom and this song came on the radio. I knew EVER word. I looked at my mom and asked her why I knew this song. With a smile on her face she told me. I was like that with “Misty Blue” by Dorothy Moore. I love both of songs so much.

Take a step back in time, Ty. Live it! I wanna see you in a bright green jump suit with bell bottoms and a large collar. And the fro! Damn it, Ty. Wear the fro! lol. Back to reality. The soul music of the early seventies was insanely good. Well thought out, well composed, great melodies, and harmonies that take you to a better place. Soul music was the natural progression from doo wop. This song, and others like it, bring me back to my childhood in a good way.

From a period with some great music by groups such as the Chi-Lites and The Commodores. Another song with a similar theme is The Four Tops "AskThe Lonely".

I was in 9th grade when that song came out. I bought the 45 single then. Later when I grew up and had a little money I bought the album. When CD's came out I bought the CD and of course recorded it for my digital devices. Dont be making us 60 years old sound so old😀. Some guys are lucky in love and others are not. Songs like these are the only comfort you have when you are alone after someone has hurt you bad.

One of the first songs I “loved” as a young teen. Funny thing, I could only listen at night as I lived in a small northwestern coastal town, a thousand miles from the radio station I heard this on...we could only get radio reception at night. KFRE (K-FREE) Fresno, California was the station, Gold Beach was my hometown. Chi-Lites became a favorite, and now, after more than fifty years, I love them as much as ever!

tI love that old school bro. They just don't make music like that anymore. Also love Delfonics, The Manhattans, The Intruders, Blue Magic, The Stylistics, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, The OJays, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, man I could go on and on but my all time favorite from those days is The Spinners. MRM speaking of the Spinners, can you react to How Could I Let You Get Away.

Ah, good old early 70's soul. So much good stuff. As others have said, the other great Chi-Lites song is "Have You Seen Her". Here's some more great stuff: The Spinners - "I'll Be Around" and "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love". Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes - "If You Don't Know Me by Now". The Stylistics - "You Are Everything", "Betcha By Golly Wow", "Break Up to Make Up", "You Make Me Feel Brand New". Al Green - "Tired of Being Alone", "Let's Stay Together", "Love and Happiness", "Look What You've Done for Me", "I'm Still in Love With You", "You Ought to Be With Me", "Call Me", "Here I Am".

I may have recommended so many Al Green songs that one might ask where one should begin. My suggestion is either "Tired of Being Alone" or "Let's Stay Together".
