This is really good advice, I'm teaching adults and they do need help with feeling comfortable and confident with their English. I have to always reassure them that anything they say is ok, making mistakes is ok. I say 'Good' and 'Yes' a lot, so they know how often they are doing well.

Hi Cesar! I started teaching adults when I was 19, so pretty close! :D You asked a really good question and I hope I'll be able to do a quick video about it. But just so I don't keep you waiting any longer, I find that making joined stories with your students helps! It can be used as a warm-up or even as a lesson. If you have a shy bunch, I would prepare a couple of random words or short sentences and scramble them up in the middle of the table and then each student picks out a piece of paper and has to add it to the story. So one person starts the story, and then the rest continue "inspired" by the word/sentence they pick out of the pile. It also depends on how "serious" your students are, what they expect from you, and their knowledge of the language. When I teach in companies, I try to find short video's on youtube or ted talks that can be controversial to start a conversation. The more controversial the more the students feel the urge to take part in the discussion.

I'm about to start a CELTA course. I know already that I have zero desire to teach kids. Probably because I dislike kids. But the idea of teaching adults really fires me up...So your vid is really helpful. Not sure how easy it will be to get a job in the adult-teaching field after though. Specially since I'm nearly 60.
How would you add in some "cultural tidbits" for a new English speaker? For example, working with a high school student who will be in a completely different setting at school. How can I both teach and also help him prepare for a new cultural environment? :) Thanks!!
Hi Amelia! You could do some research on the country your student will be moving to, or do some research on the town or school. You can go through google maps together and talk about what is in the area, parks, shops, and recreational areas. It could be fun for the two of you to learn these new things together. Maybe there are some things he already knows and he could try and tell you? As for you as a teacher, you could research some slang words or phrases young people use in that country. But I think that the most important thing would be to work on your students' self-confidence. Going to high school in a different country where you won’t be speaking your native language sounds frightening. There will be things he won’t understand, people will speak with an accent he might not be used to, or speak too quickly, he might be embarrassed that he has an accent when he speaks in English. I think that these are topics that are also worth talking about. But, to let him know that having an accent is nothing to be ashamed of - it just lets people know where you’re from but that that’s awesome! You can try turning the tables and asking him how he would feel if a new student came to his high school and wasn’t fluent in his native language. When my students tell me they’re embarrassed about their accent I often ask them how they feel when a person from another country tries to speak their language, or what they think of the French accent or Spanish accent when that person speaks in English. Often they say they don’t mind, or that if they hear someone trying to speak Polish they’re really brave and awesome for trying. Having an accent means you know a different language! Another important thing to understand is that the most important thing is to be understood. So I would scrap any focus on grammar and just build his confidence up to speak. And once he is there, surrounded by English speakers, he is gonna be speaking just like them in no time. People pay big bucks for these types of “immersion” English courses and he is just gonna have it for free. ;) I’m sorry I wrote you a book. I hope some of this helps. My heart goes out to him and I hope you’ll be able to convince him that he is gonna be just fine. Good luck with your lessons!

I started to teach adults my native language (which is not english btw). I took over classes of my colleague but unfortunately I'm still not familiar with the students current level at the language. That makes it hard for me to pick contents. Yesterdays content was good (I thought), but there have still been basic problems which kind of crushed my structure a little. It was my first lesson with that student so maybe it was inevitable. however for the future, I would like to know how to figure out a students level quickly so that I can prepare my lessons better. Would you happen to have any tips on that? And sorry if there are any mistakes in my english, I rarely get to use it.

awesome tips. maybe im alone like that , but i try to find the lowest place in the room when I dont feel confident. it makes me feel less like "being on a stage " where everything i say is carefully observed :D. i would go for the same level sitting positioning

Thanks, Suzi! Do you have any advice on teaching elders? I have 2 students who are in their 60s and they seem to forget most of the things I teach them no matter how often I explain the same stuff over and over. I've also noticed that it's pretty much impossible for them to do a listening exercise because their thinking process is way too slow to answer a question or complete a blank as they listen. They get stuck in the first few words and take their time to try and understand what they mean (and they never get them at the end). I care a lot about them and would really like to help them better because it brings me down to see them get so frustrated. Thanks.
At the first moment you use famous words that he or she may know... like, love, facebook, instagram... words that he sees and that are included in his context, you should mix the native language and the English, it's a good start

And yup. she understands English at around an American Eighth Grade level (around my age) and she can read an English novel in around 3 Weeks and she writes suspiciously similar to comic sans (true fact :P). I'm teaching her conversation because here in India English is basically something YOU HAVE to learn, but the way it's taught, it's never to be spoken imho. Sorry for the long write up :P
I need help teaching how to use adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions etc. 😩 my student has no concept of these in their language. example - I am doing, she'd say "I doing". and i cannot figure out how to make her understand this. she just feels bad and says "we don't have this in my language" which means it'll take her longer to comprehend parts of speech and tenses 😭😭

Hi Pedro! I'd start with just trying to talk to him using simple sentences. You can start with some basic questions and answers. How are you, what did you do today, what are your plans for tomorrow, where do you work, what's your job etc. If he struggles to understand some of the questions, you could create a kind of routine for every lesson. Start each lesson with the same/similar questions so that he becomes familiar with them. If he struggles answering, help him with the answers in the beginning and ask the same question he struggled to answer on the next lesson, and help him answer it again - until he is confident enough to answer it on his own. He should listen as much as he can in his free time. Maybe you could could find some youtube videos, podcasts or ted-talk's that are related to his job? TED talks are great (ted.com) because you can put on English subtitles, or ever better, switch on the transcript - then you can read and listen at the same time. You could give him homework to listen to one talk (each talk is around 10-20min) and see how much he understands on his own, and then both of you can watch it again together and try to discuss it. Be patient and congratulate him when he does something right - like when he answers a question on his own. Hi Sarah! Oh no! I only saw your comment now! I have no idea how I missed it! I hope your moms interview went well. "Conversational" English is all she probably needs to nail her interview. I highly doubt they would be asking her grammar related questions. What companies mainly look for is your ability to communicate fluently. So as long as she's confident about getting what she wants to say across and understand what's being said to her she should be fine. Native speakers make a lot of grammar mistakes that they are unaware of and nobody bats an eye. How did it go by the way?

I would start with doing things she already knows how to do, to work on her confidence and start working slowly from there. But if you don't have a lot of time and she's under pressure anyway, maybe it would be a good idea to focus on what she needs to know for the exam - are there any exams from the previous years that you could work on with her?

Try to convince her to forget about the grammar. :) Many people struggle with this and it's because so much pressure is put on grammar at school. I made a video a while back about why I don't teach grammar (link here: th-cam.com/video/610vqrK4Olk/w-d-xo.html ). It breaks my heart when I see so many people afraid to speak because they are afraid to make a mistake. You can try building her up first; if she says something in English tell her "see! You CAN speak! You just said it in English!" Try to find topics or activities that she enjoys so that she can relax and open up. Sometimes if I have kids that are afraid to speak I do a few really easy lessons using very simple vocabulary to build up their confidence. How old is your sister?
Hi! How much does she already know? Is she a beginner? I often use articles from BBC or the New York Times, or videos from TED.com but they're usually for students who can speak and read at least a little bit.

Hi, very useful, positive video, your smile is a great teaching tool too! I would add one more tip: do not take yourself very seriously in class and be brave to do silly things and pull faces to prove that you are relaxed and it's ok to have fun in class (unless you are an academic lecturer in front of a bunch of conservative PhdS :D ). Especially with the nervous students humour helps a lot! Simple jokes, silly answers to questions, laughing at yourself, telling funny stories about what you do at weekends and then encouraging students to join in: Every day I eat a huge birthday cake for breakfast. At weekends I never get up before 1pm. My dog takes me for a walk every day..... an so on! X

They have to practice creating language... for them selves, do they understand? How to make a good activity so they can practice speaking with the actions they do..
Haha! Oh man, I think that the main ingredient for teaching your mom anything is PATIENCE. My tip would be to try and forget she's your mom and treat her like any other student. Good luck by the way. I think teaching your mom is defiinitly LEVEL HARD.
What do you feel is going wrong? How do you think your lessons are going? Do you feel she’s bored on your lessons? Is she not making any improvements? Is she complaining? Do you know what your student enjoys doing? Maybe there are some topics that interest her that you could talk about and you could find new vocabulary together. Then on the next lesson you could see what she remembers and try to use the new vocabulary in different sentences.

It could be that you're used to a different accent. :) Mine is South African, buuut, after teaching for 15 years I've learned to speak a bit clearer so that it's easier for my ESL students to understand me. English sounds different all over the world, what's most important is that you've been understood! :)

awesome tips. maybe im alone like that , but i try to find the lowest place in the room when I dont feel confident. it makes me feel less like "being on a stage " where everything i say is carefully observed :D. i would go for the same level sitting positioning

Thanks, Suzi! Do you have any advice on teaching elders? I have 2 students who are in their 60s and they seem to forget most of the things I teach them no matter how often I explain the same stuff over and over. I've also noticed that it's pretty much impossible for them to do a listening exercise because their thinking process is way too slow to answer a question or complete a blank as they listen. They get stuck in the first few words and take their time to try and understand what they mean (and they never get them at the end). I care a lot about them and would really like to help them better because it brings me down to see them get so frustrated. Thanks.

At the first moment you use famous words that he or she may know... like, love, facebook, instagram... words that he sees and that are included in his context, you should mix the native language and the English, it's a good start

And yup. she understands English at around an American Eighth Grade level (around my age) and she can read an English novel in around 3 Weeks and she writes suspiciously similar to comic sans (true fact :P). I'm teaching her conversation because here in India English is basically something YOU HAVE to learn, but the way it's taught, it's never to be spoken imho. Sorry for the long write up :P

I need help teaching how to use adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions etc. 😩 my student has no concept of these in their language.
example - I am doing, she'd say "I doing". and i cannot figure out how to make her understand this. she just feels bad and says "we don't have this in my language" which means it'll take her longer to comprehend parts of speech and tenses 😭😭

Hi, I’m 15 and have to teach my dad how to speak basic English because he is going to travel with his company to the US. I’m pretty confident on my English skills since I lived in the US as a kid and have been studying English since I was 4. The problem is that I have no idea about what to start teaching him first and how to do it. Can you please help me?
Hi Pedro! I'd start with just trying to talk to him using simple sentences. You can start with some basic questions and answers. How are you, what did you do today, what are your plans for tomorrow, where do you work, what's your job etc. If he struggles to understand some of the questions, you could create a kind of routine for every lesson. Start each lesson with the same/similar questions so that he becomes familiar with them. If he struggles answering, help him with the answers in the beginning and ask the same question he struggled to answer on the next lesson, and help him answer it again - until he is confident enough to answer it on his own. He should listen as much as he can in his free time. Maybe you could could find some youtube videos, podcasts or ted-talk's that are related to his job? TED talks are great (ted.com) because you can put on English subtitles, or ever better, switch on the transcript - then you can read and listen at the same time. You could give him homework to listen to one talk (each talk is around 10-20min) and see how much he understands on his own, and then both of you can watch it again together and try to discuss it. Be patient and congratulate him when he does something right - like when he answers a question on his own. Hi Sarah! Oh no! I only saw your comment now! I have no idea how I missed it! I hope your moms interview went well. "Conversational" English is all she probably needs to nail her interview. I highly doubt they would be asking her grammar related questions. What companies mainly look for is your ability to communicate fluently. So as long as she's confident about getting what she wants to say across and understand what's being said to her she should be fine. Native speakers make a lot of grammar mistakes that they are unaware of and nobody bats an eye. How did it go by the way?

My student will soon be giving her board exams and she's facing difficulties with the basics, by basics I mean she is unable to write without seeing. She can't read English words. Soon she's going to give her board exams.

I would start with doing things she already knows how to do, to work on her confidence and start working slowly from there. But if you don't have a lot of time and she's under pressure anyway, maybe it would be a good idea to focus on what she needs to know for the exam - are there any exams from the previous years that you could work on with her?

Try to convince her to forget about the grammar. :) Many people struggle with this and it's because so much pressure is put on grammar at school. I made a video a while back about why I don't teach grammar (link here: th-cam.com/video/610vqrK4Olk/w-d-xo.html ). It breaks my heart when I see so many people afraid to speak because they are afraid to make a mistake. You can try building her up first; if she says something in English tell her "see! You CAN speak! You just said it in English!" Try to find topics or activities that she enjoys so that she can relax and open up. Sometimes if I have kids that are afraid to speak I do a few really easy lessons using very simple vocabulary to build up their confidence. How old is your sister?

Hi, very useful, positive video, your smile is a great teaching tool too! I would add one more tip: do not take yourself very seriously in class and be brave to do silly things and pull faces to prove that you are relaxed and it's ok to have fun in class (unless you are an academic lecturer in front of a bunch of conservative PhdS :D ). Especially with the nervous students humour helps a lot! Simple jokes, silly answers to questions, laughing at yourself, telling funny stories about what you do at weekends and then encouraging students to join in: Every day I eat a huge birthday cake for breakfast. At weekends I never get up before 1pm. My dog takes me for a walk every day..... an so on! X

Haha! Oh man, I think that the main ingredient for teaching your mom anything is PATIENCE. My tip would be to try and forget she's your mom and treat her like any other student. Good luck by the way. I think teaching your mom is defiinitly LEVEL HARD.

What do you feel is going wrong? How do you think your lessons are going? Do you feel she’s bored on your lessons? Is she not making any improvements? Is she complaining? Do you know what your student enjoys doing? Maybe there are some topics that interest her that you could talk about and you could find new vocabulary together. Then on the next lesson you could see what she remembers and try to use the new vocabulary in different sentences.
