    Great work from Sony as always. As a wildlife photographer who only shoot stills I won't be getting this as the global shutter doesn't matter to me as much as the 50 mp of the a1. The speed boost a really good implementation to make that 120fps usable. But honestly, it feels like they just included it for press. 120fps for 1.6 seconds before the buffer fills? Really? And 11 seconds to clear the card AND you can only use it with Sony approved glass or it's 15fps max? Imagine if Nikon or Canon did that. This community would be asking for blood. Great job on the initial review guys. Love your honesty.

    Sony haven't done this type of an event since 2018 which was the launched of the A7iii. Now that they held this event again with the A9-iii having so many photographers there to capture the moving models, they are serious about their new Global Shutter sensor. Back in 2017, not a lot of photographers reviewed the A9 besides Jared Polin, Jason Vong, Ted Forbes, Tony & Chelsea, Dan Watson and a few others. Today, there are more photographers talking about the a9-iii more than ever before. Looking forward to all the review videos and seeing the next revolution in the camera world. I've been waiting for Global Shutter too and I cannot wait to play with the A9-iii. Thanks Petal Pixel.

    The 120 FPS is great, especially if it at 24 MP. The Z9 already does that but smaller sized. Since it has the ability to shoot that fast, the buffer needs to be larger. “Another manufacturer” already has internal storage, if they added internal storage, they might could utilize it for the buffer. Either way, the buffer needs to be larger and clear faster. That being said, it seems to be a great tool. I am sure it will do well.

    • @tibor29
      @tibor29 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, internal storage would make a lot of sense on this camera. I'm surprised that Sony doesn't offer it as an option.

    • @Grr8jon
      @Grr8jon ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Z9 does 120fps with a smaller size (11mp) and....just jpeg. Also the z9 shouldn't be compared to this since it's way higher megapixels. Different category.

  • @earthpeace3323
    @earthpeace3323 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    A9iii looks impressive. The size of the buffer and the speed of clearing the buffer is definitely a big limitation.

    • @tibor29
      @tibor29 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      A built in SSD would really help with that. I'm surprised that Sony didn't offer that as an option on these cameras considering that the amounts of data being transferred are overwhelming even for CF-Express Type A cards.

    • @boblozano
      @boblozano ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The limitations of cfexpress type A are going to be a significant handicap, in practice. Starting with half the data lanes, then using the previous (slower) standard for the lanes that remain are a really unfortunate choice. External ssd may help, IFF they've implemented USB 4. But then you lose the size benefits of type A ... would have been much simpler to just pick cfexpress type B 4.0 to begin with.

    13:20 The A7Rv was less noisy that the A9iii in both pictures, especially at 20,000iso. I imagine dynamic range will be better on the A7Rv too. The cameras of course are designed two completely different things. I imagine the A1ii will be a compromise of both, but hardly 'worse' than either.

    It’s weird how people are upset at canon for not currently having third party lenses with autofocus, while being okay with Sony crippling third party lens speed.
    They are both trying to cripple non first party glass. They’re just using different methods.
    Both should be unacceptable.

    • @mengshun
      @mengshun ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely different approaches. Canon is clearly trying to keep the "mirrorless" tax high as if consumers would be happy to downgrade to DSLRs. Canon and Nikon clearly expected to command luxury prices on mirrorless lenses - and a monopoly on those lenses - while providing mediocre to good bodies, much like the DSLR era. Sony fliipped the script and knew building a lens catalog by themselves was suicidal. But the 3rd party lens cooperation lead to three beneficial aspects: 1) they completely overrran the competition on mirrorless glass and now are the 800 lb gorilla 2) they have completely disrupted the lens first profit model of the competition and have put them in a very bad position 3) they have generated a lot fo goodwill with consumers and 3rd parties. It is far easier to handle the high speed caps on 3rd party lenses when their lenses provice excellent value and performance. We - the comsumers - get why. As for Canon and Nikon: we know their game and it's "you must pay a huge luxury tax on everything and we are the only game in town." The rage is real. And deserved.

    • @JMurph2015
      @JMurph2015 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mengshunCanon is 100% fine lmao. They literally can't make enough lenses to fill the demand for them right now. Want a 100-300L f/2.8? (a ~$10K lens) You're gonna be waiting a few months for the *privilege* of buying one. Canon's RF L lenses have been excellent with few exceptions. Canon is a lens company that makes cameras, Sony is an electronics company that happens to make cameras and lenses. It's a very different business model.

    The A9iii is definitely a game changer for both photography and video. Knowing Sony tends to pass down high end features to the cheaper models, will we see a global shutter for Sony's APS-C cameras? If anyone can find a way to do it, It's Sony. Bringing global shutter to more budget friendly cameras would be a huge change for the mirrorless world.
    I'm shooting with the Sony FX30 now. And I've been looking at other brands like Panasonic for what they've been doing with their new models. But, now that Sony once again is flexing some real innovative muscle, I am tempted to stick with them to see what comes next.

    small point: in the video banding and flickering are mixed up (which happens often, as they result from the same phenomenon, a flickering light source) - banding comes from a sequential readout of the lines of the sensor, so a global shutter should be, per principle, free of any banding. the camera has an anti-flickering function, which detects flickering and then exposes at the peak of the flicker, suppressing variation of exposure between images (not within images, that's the banding noted before).

    Those card write issues seem suspicious and the limiting of third party lens compatability will end up confusing. Most aputures don't open and close on shutter release these days so I can't see why this would be an issue.

      Cos of RED's douchey patent wars. Canon gets a free pass because RED uses RF mount. Nikon just won (not technically, but practically) against RED and managed to keep their proprietary RAW format. Sony lost to RED the last time they got sued for having internal compressed RAW. Sony could totally copy BM and release S-RAW or something with partial debayering/denoising but perhaps the market isn't big enough for them to do R&D for a new format.

    As a Nikon shooter for sports, action, wildlife, I embrace this (and am just a tiny bit jealous). I agree, that this is currently a niche camera and more a "proof of concept" camera (i.e. Sony being first with a consumer directed, full frame, global sensor/shutter. Bravo. Seriously, who is going to buy the power pack to support flash at 1/80,000th of a second for $17K? The interesting thing remains why the higher base ISO - we know the speculation - and the limitations of CFE A type cards etc. All said, though, it pushes the industry and that's a good thing if you want the advantages (i.e. dropping sync speed restrictions - for the most part). Global Sensor was on my wish list for the Nikon Z9 before it was released. I was told "that's far off" - Not so far, was it? ;-) Thanks for your review, as always, tremendous production value and data here. Always appreciated for keeping it entertaining and real.

      What do you mean by "Pixel Depth"? Do you mean full well capacity?

    • @ricardorgomez
      @ricardorgomez ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Bayonet1809 Basically, how many shades of color can a pixel gather. For instance, there are at least 99 shades of what is defined as the color 'red'. So if you paint them all side by side from dark to light, it would look very smooth. If you had 10 shades of red, it would look very blocky. You would see where each shade started and ended.
      For photography where that matters most (portraits, wildlife, landscapes), pixel depth is hugely and sometimes the most important factor. Mostly because we know what these things look like. We know when these things look 'off'. I can tell when a portrait was taken with a camera with great PD and one that wasn't. Skin tones.
      But cameras are so damn good these days, it really takes the discerning eye to see the difference. Most clients don't see the difference. While I'm one of those people who can, I choose the Panasonic G9. It doesn't do anything at "the best" level. But as an all-arounder, it's fantastic. I shoot fashion, events, street... LOVE using that camera. I know an extremely successful commercial photographer that uses m43 as his primary camera (an Olympus OM-1). But he has a $50k Phase One Medium Format camera for his personal work. Because he can tell the difference. And a camera I may consider getting myself someday for the same reason.
      The technology of this new Sony is quite fantastic. But as Sony stated and the inclusion of an ethernet port is an obvious clue, this is geared for professional sports photographers. If this is what I shot, I'd seriously be looking at the camera....

    A global shutter has been rumored for the Canon R1 since Canon has repeatedly said they wouldn't launch the R1 until they had something "game-changing" enough. I think this announcement is Sony realizing Canon was actually serious and Sony wanted to get ahead of the media cycle. Of course the A9iii was always going to have a GS, I'm just saying why they announced it 6 months early is because they realized Canon was coming to the party as well.

    When the global shutter captures immediate light information across the entire sensor, how does it function when dealing with flashing strobe lights at a high shutter speed in video recording? Or slow motion with low incandescent lights with slow shutter speed?

      @AuthenticPioneer You are right that we photographers use any camera as a tool. But excuse me if I don't agree that cheap is good for professionals, because I have met many photographers who use not only the best cameras, but also the most expensive cameras for clients. And this is a necessary thing, firstly to provide the best cutting-edge technology and secondly to appreciate our customers. By the way, I've heard a lot of complaints from customers who know cameras on the market if you end up shooting with a consumer one. Maybe it's the clients you have, but professional businesses usually don't make art primarily, but they do provide top-notch images.

    Not having continuous autofocus above 1/16,000 shutter speed seems odd considering the A1 can do 1/32,000 with no problems at all. The A1 also seems to have a deeper buffer if the A9II gets only 140~ shots before its full. The A1 I think gets over 150 even with twice the resolution.

    Its time for Sony to stop the frames per second limitation of 15 fps that they put on third part glass. It was ok when the A9 shot 20 fps and the 3rd party glass did slightly less. Or when the A1 did 30 fps and 3rd party glass did 50% the speed. But Sony cannot expect people to spend 6000 dollars on a camera that shoots 120 fps. And everyone with there 3rd party glass on gets 15 fps. That is crazy. Sony needs to at least make it 60 fps for the A9lll. But in my opinion its time for Sony to enable 3rd party glass to shoot the same fps as the Sony glass. And Sony should also enable focus breathing compinsation for 3rd party glass. Sony needs to appreciate the fact that the availability of 3rd party glass for Sony cameras has gotten thousands of people to switch from Canon and Nikon to Sony. So its time for Sony to enable 3rd party glass to do every thing the same as the Sony glass.
