This is what happens when an area, formerly in full employment, has its heart ripped out but never receives the promised alternatives to the traditional heavy industries. As time passes, and unemployment rises, the entire face of the area changes. This is compounded by the council placing known trouble-makers in very cheap-to-rent housing. As the lass in the film stated correctly, there is a great community spirit in Byker amongst the long-standing residents but it must be a nightmare to have to deal with as many smack-headed zombies too. The Byker Wall has won an unfathomable amount of awards for its architecture; it's a rabbit warren imo.

I remember being at a construction site in Byker for a couple of weeks or so.. the days were fine but it was the night time when things got real dodgy, lots of odd/strange/funny characters would stop by and sometimes say hello, sometimes shout at you and sometimes even try and sell you drugs.... teenagers were a major nuisance, they would come and set fire to stuff whenever they could and throw stones, bottles, etc at you when you tried to confront them. You would hear various sounds or noises of people fighting, cursing .. shouting, police sirens, etc throughout the night every night of the week but weekend nights were the most challanging.

I used to work in those train sheds, maybe the ones next to them that are still open? Good vid!
Yeah I think they’re still open. Thanks for the comment:)
My lad of 2 years was from byker/Walker and it’s not that bad. Just as a young lass there’s lots of creepy/dodgy men that talk to u for no reason
Thank you for this really interesting loved it
Thanks Lisa!
Please do more on Newcastle and Gateshead I have been to newcastle once before great place and I'm going back in june to see more of the city and places good and bad I would love to do a whole city tour of newcastle and Gateshead it might be the case of me doing that when I go back in june
Scotchy is the roughest neighbourhood in Newcastle
Scots wood is largely been redeveloped now, all new houses
Newcastle isn’t rough in general, it’s one of the safest cities in the Uk
Not much left of Scotswood these days. But back in the 99s it was pretty bad
believe me you geordies dont know how good you got it compared to some parts of the west midlands
Loved the video. I’m also from Newcastle
Cheers mate!
@@theSalukie Have you ever came across the 5G conspiracy theorists Mark Steele and Lee Garrett? Mark was jailed back in 1993 for shooting a girl in the head and has convinced people he is a weapons expert and 5G is on the street lights killing people.
What is a definition of the rough place? Dirty? Unwelcome? Chance to be murdered in few minutes? The Byker looks pretty civilized. Like a beautiful place compare to others.
Them kids are posh you can hear when saying the windows and one else would say windas. Thats why they went through day as they'd be scared at night
Only people in Byker with decent cars - are the dealers
Newcastle isn't rough mate, yes we have crime and such but it isn't rough! I have been in Byker, Jesmond, and loads
Yeah that’s the point lol
Jesmond is a luxury student area though
Jesmond your kidding right jesmond is posh central
All it is you have well off areas and areas where its mostly social housing. I'm from nw london where it's like that but because of Wembley stadium you have spots of gentrification going on. To be honest this area up Newcastle looks like home to me. Plus I lived in places like handsworth brum and all that. As long as ppl are cool to me I'm cool with them.
I’m from Newcastle and literally nobody calls it a ‘hood’
looks like the guy who just cut my hair haha
I live here for almost 19 years .
I loved near and around the Byker Wall for years, never had an issue with anyone ever. The Raby on The Shields Road however…..
my mothers 1st husband used to own the raby :)
If you go at night your perception will change.
Amazing Footage my friend!
Thank you Yoav :)
You should do a video about Bensham, also the people lovely and friendly in Greenside as well.
Video about the Jews in Bensham/Gateshead coming on Saturday
Greenside isn't even remotely rough. Bensham on the other hand, what a dive (and nearby Teams)
@@tameracingdriver greenside as on,way to ryton,
Its lovely
The council moving around problem tenants and families kinda dictate where the worst areas are .. left yem in 2010 and them days the cowgate estate always had the worst reputation. But like you say majority people living on council estates are fine its the smackheads and teenagers that cause all the bother
Im from Byker, Im the top dog, if anyone wants a scrap meet me at the Oval any saturday after dark. Big up the byker mandem. what u sayin bwo. swag out 1738

BYKER CAN BE SUPER FRIENDLY TOO!!! Go and interview one of the girls on the till in there they are SOUND AS FUCK =)

You never went down to the hostel at the bottom of shields road and walker is rough you weren't far away when you were at the church
