Thank you Roscoe for handling the discussion of Jonghyun exactly like Shawols would want, a recognition of his art without erasing his existence.

It’s so important to talk about Jonghyun and I get frustrated with people feeling the need to say “RIP” every time he is discussed, shown or anything. We know he’s passed but he’s so much more than that. And if all you know him for is his passing, please get to know him and the musical genius that he was.

You nailed it, SHINee and shawols are never going to stop talking about Jonghyun. He is one of kind and had a huge impact on a lot of people. He was a brilliant poet/lyricist, singer, and composer, and he always used his position to stand up for the oppressed (in a very conservative and patriarchal culture).

You're right, Jonghyun is always part of SHINee and the members are all vocal about this fact. 5HINee forever.

Jonghyun is one of the few that died and where people speak about him. In Korea if you do something like this as an idol, it is like you have never existed.
I am very prod that Shinee and the shawol refuse to let that happen to Jonghyun.
    Thank you for this Video.
As i watched some of your videos, i feel the love you gave your community. You manage to unite something that would otherwise be in conflict. You are a blessing as reactor.

Exceptional Shinee, as always. This is the last Korean MV for our love so us Shawols are very attached to this video. It's moody and dark and sad while sounding upbeat at times. If you watch their videos or stages since JJong's passing, they still leave space for him in their choreo, they are five forever. Please never forget him or stop talking about him. He was a real man, with an enormous heart and soul, and he gave us so much. The ending of a story was a tragedy but even bigger tragedy would be to forget him. Talk about him, all of his life, all of his passion, his talent, his perfect smile and laugh, his wicked sense of humor, his compassion and empathy. The end does not need to be the whole story.

You talk about this event (and those like it) as a sledgehammer and that really is such an accurate description. I remember this day when it happened. And the entire kpop industry ground to a halt for days. An industry that is always going always putting out new content. It all just stopper.
And SHINee has talked about this. They want people to acknowledge Jonghyun. And SHINee is always 5. And Minho quite often during their concerts points to the sky or songs to the sky. He’s always there.

I think everyone newly discovering Shinee and finding out about Jonghyun are, understandbly, cautious about the whole subject; how to address it, should it be addressed at all, is it a touchy subject for Shawols, etc. As others have pointed out in the comments, even the members themselves, it's okay to talk about him, remember him, miss him, etc. The members still refer to themselves as 5, and if you look closely enough, you can still see spots in even newer choreos where you could tell JH would fit in. I think the only real issue that Shawols have is when people essentially reduce him to his passing, and nothing more, because obviously he accomplished so much and was so much more than his death. I think as long as people are respectful and willing to talk about and appreciate the whole, not just the one tragic event, they'll be fine.

I love this song so much ❤ The choreo is gorgeous too, and the looks for that era omg.
Its personal to everyone, but I love talking about Jjong. He is way more than just his death and I think it's important to remember him as a whole. He gave us some amazing memories too. He's also my favourite vocalist (and idol soloist) to this day, I genuinely enjoy his voice and music so much ☺
Also the chat was a bit of a mess here so if anyone wants clarification, TMWTD was released and promoted Nov 2016, Shinee also released Get the Treasure (japanese) in Jan 2017. SHINee then did a bunch of tours/solo work, and Jjong passed in Dec 2017. Sometimes I see people say Jjong passed right after TMWDT (or even before it) but no it was a year later.

the last MV with Jonghyun is get the treasure. Unfortunately Jonghyun passed away too soon, leaving but I find it important to remember this great artist who with his genius wrote songs not only for Shinee (odd eye, juliette, View) but also for other artists (Taemin, IU, EXO, Lee hi). He is still a member of Shinee today like 16 years ago (even if spiritually). The members are the first who care even with just a gesture to remember him. I would be very happy if I could listen to some of his solo songs like Skeleton flower, Crazy, end of day, Ysi fuera ella.

This is one of my favorite #5hinee songs. When jonghyun passed, I listened to this song all the time. Key's verse lonely lonely lonely stucks in my ears. Every time i hear this song it brings tears to my eyes. To me, this song is just one more reminder that Jonghyun was hurting and needed help. It breaks my heart but the song is so good.

The members themselves always leave a spot or like Minho does points up to acknowledge him. Always 5. It was crappy that their company didn't want to have them talk about it with their fans-they should have been able to. The idol industry can be brutal.

To help explain what is happening in SHINee's "Tell Me What to Do" MV, the members are all playing a group of friends, which also includes the girl. How I interpret the story, is that they all have been friends with this girl for a very long time and Taemin has always been in love with her, but unfortunately, what you see is that she is in love with Minho and they are dating.
However, Taemin is super jealous and his jealousy has gotten to the point where he can no longer hide his anger and disappointment -- that's why you see him acting kind of crazy and really angry. That's why we see him getting drunk and silently watching Minho and the girl with that seething, jealous look on his face. It is also why he crazily picks up the gun and waves it around like he is drunkenly joking with everyone and making bad choices.
It's supposed to be about a group of teenagers/young 20-something guys hanging out together and partying in an abandoned warehouse or construction site, etc. We see them having fun riding around in the car together, but if you notice, Taemin is sitting there jealously watching Minho and the girl and wishing it was him who she was in love with.
I interpret the floating guns as a metaphor, where Taemin is surrendering to everything and he is struggling to figure out how to cope with all his feelings, etc.
We see Minho and Taemin get in a fight. Minho is essentially saying, "Hey man, it's not my fault she is in love with me and not you," etc.
Minho always writes his own rap section in SHINee's songs, so the rap was given that flow for a very specific reason. It is meant to be completely different than the rest of the song because it represents the anger and frustration he is feeling at that moment. (You should really look up the lyrics in order to see what the song is about.)
The song is called "Tell Me What To Do" because the rest of the members are pretty much saying, "Tell me what to do? What should I do to fix the problems in our friendship and how do we go back to the way we used to be?", etc. It's a coming-of-age story about friendship and the things that can happen in someone's life that can cause a rift between friends.
In the end, we see Taemin drop the lighter, and some say the lighter is what catches the car on fire, symbolizing the end to their youthful innocence. But we also see Minho and the girl -- who is played by well-known actress Han So Hee -- get in the car and when Minho turns the key to start the car it blows up because we see the gas line has been cut, or something has been tampered with. Some say Taemin is so jealous that he blows up the car thinking that if he can't have the girl, then he doesn't want anyone to have her. However, he didn't consider the fact that Minho might also be in the car with her. So, he also kills Minho. It is speculated that's why Taemin looks so shocked right after we see the car catch fire is because he realizes what he has just done.
Which is now thought to be connected to Minho's solo "Heartbreak" MV storyline. In his "Heartbreak" MV we think Minho might be trying to fix the rift between the group and travel back in time to prevent things from happening the way they did, etc.
"Tell Me What To Do" came out in 2016 and it was the lead track on SHINee's repackaged 1 and 1 album, which is a partner album to their 1 Of 1 album and title track MV "1 Of 1," which has a retro '90s theme. (BTW: This is the last Korean MV you will see Jonghyun in in the chronology of SHINee MVs. Their next Japanese track "Get the Treasure" is the very last MV as all 5.)
The only saving grace to this story is that we know that SHINee is too much of a close-knit group to ever let something like this happen to them for real and, that in terms of SHINee, this story is so far from reality that this would never happen with their friendships. Once again, this was a departure from anything we have ever seen from SHINee before, and it's unlike anything they have ever done as a concept for an MV. But it was exactly SHINee-like in every way.
You should really watch a video of SHINee performing this song live on Jonghyun's radio program called "Blue Night." (Search: "Tell Me What To Do Blue Night Radio.") The radio show was hosted by Jonghyun every night at midnight for 3 years. During "Tell Me What To Do" promotions the other SHINee members were guests on the show and Jonghyun had to do double duty that night as both host and guest. This was my favorite performance of "Tell Me What To Do," and not only are their vocals magnificent, but it also shows you a little glimpse into their goofy, fun personalities as well.
You should also check out a live performance of "Tell Me What To Do." Because, even though there is no dancing in the MV, this was one of their lead promotional tracks, so they performed it on music programs and in concert. This choreography is so uniquely SHINee. I think you will find a new appreciation for this song, once you see a live full performance. :D

I don't have any skill at dancing so when I saw the dance practice for Move, I was incredibly impressed with Taemin's skill but it didn't hook me. I have ZERO knowledge about fashion so I just thought SHINee looked kinda awesome. But I do have some experience with singing and Jonghyun IMMEDIATELY blew me away. His talent just oozes out of every performance. The power, the soft tones, the emotion, the variety of timbres, and that X factor that is so hard to put a finger on. From the quiet yet emotional vibe of Diphylleia Grayi and Elevator to the incredible power of Y Si Fuera Ella and Crazy (Guilty Pleasure). His skill at songwriting and producing is just the icing on the cake.
Give your eye for video production, it'll be interesting to get your take on She Is. It's quite the ride.

i like to think that while all members [and shawols] carry on jonghyun in them, taemin is really the star that carries him brightest. taemin has said so many times his most hated song was [and still is] Replay because the company didn't belive in his singing and wouldn't let him have a single line. jonghyun and onew took it upon themselves personally to give taemin vocal training . if you listen to taemin's vocals, he actually does sound very very similar in tone to jonghyun. he opens his mouth, and the late leader comes out in the most beautiful ways.
