My favourite memory of Stefan Edburg is... Well he was hot in my heyday and his mini shorts... Ok he was a brilliant all round tennis player. We all need some humour in these bleak times. 🇿🇦

Additional trivia: The ATP named it's annual sportsmanship award after Edberg. Beautiful tennis, beautiful person.
Edberg’s defence of his US open title in 1992 was probably the grittiest effort I’ve seen in 40 years of watching tennis. 22 hours and 22 minutes total on court, which is a record. Amazingly more than half of that had to be played in the last 4 days of the tournament. He beat Krajicek, (whom he’d never beaten) in 5 sets, Lendl in 5 sets in the QF, Chang in the SF in 5 sets in hours and 26 minutes (longest US open match in history) and then came back to beat Sampras in the final. Mary Carrillo said in her usual understated way, “I guess he really feels like defending his title”. Class act all the way. He won the sportsmanship of the year award so often that they named it after him.

I think 1992 was his peak performance year.
I think that US Open may have taken a toll on his body. He was never quite the same.
If it wasn't for Stich in 1991 'stealing' that victory in the semi, Edberg would have taken another Wimbledon crown that year. Of all the times I watched Edberg at Wimbledon, he seemed most relaxed and sharp at that one.

Along side with Johnny Mac, the best volleyers in the history of tennis. At least since 1968 when I first started watching and loving the game. Stefan had one of the best one handed backhands too. A thing of beauty.
My inspiration to play when i was young
The quickest player to get to the net ever, Thomas Muster had nightmares with him, in every surface. A gentleman, one of the last of a dying breed (Serve-Volleyers)...

he will stay for ever ! His win against Chang in the French Open 96 was
probably my best memory because I saw it live...7 years ago I was crying
in front of my TV. And I would say that his last run in the US open 96
was awesome too : I saw all of his matches and his emotional farewell
against Goran...Gentleman, warrior, he has everything. And he leads tennis to perfection when he won the final of the US open in 91 : it's the highest level of tennis I had ever seen even today.
Agree ... I idolised stefan Edberg as a kid. Watched each & every game he played on TV.

Edberg vs Becker Wimbledon 1990 is the most emotional match I’ve ever watched! That win to me was his most defining.

Could have been quite a few more slams. Specificalliy the french open 1989 being 2-1 up vs 17 year old chang and dominating Lendl in the Aus Open 1990 before retiring with a muscle injury.
Australian Open 1990 .Compelety inaccurate statement. It was an even match with edberg having a slight edge..also edberg did not seem hampered by injury in the 2nd set and Lendl won it through methodical and classic passing shots. Lendl proved it in 1991 as to who is the Boss. It was only post 1990 when he lost the sting in his serve that edberg started beating him more consistenty. Their record prior to 1990 is clearly in Ivan's favour and edberg in fact was intimidated by the Lendl factor.
Exactly. How much I would have given for him to win that 1989 Roland Garros final. He lost three finals in a row (RG 1989, Wimbledon 1989, and AO 1990).
@@relaxmax6808 No. It was an accurate statement, in 1990 AO Edberg had an abdominal injury at the end of his semi final against Wilander. Edberg was hampered by an injury and that was something even Lendl acknowledge during his interview at during the press. Lendl said he knew something was wrong at the beginning of the match, Edberg was serving about 60% of his full power with his first serve, Lendl was frustrated for most part of the match as he could not out fox Edberg. Edberg proved what he was going to do with Lendl 3 months late in Tokyo, it was 5, 1, 0 in straight sets. Even in their semi at AO the following year Edberg served for the match in the fourth. Edberg turned the corner against Lendl at 1989 Masters.
@@relaxmax6808 and Edberg finished his rivalry with Lendl ahead at 14 - 13 and there are not many players with winning records against Ivan Lendl. In grand slam matches Edberg is ahead 5-4.
Lendl was gutted by Edberg at the 1990 Wimbledon. The year before (1989) Lendl nearly beat Becker in the semifinals before losing in 5 tough sets. This gave Lendl tremendous confidence that he could win the one slam that eluded him-Wimbledon. He was so confident and determined in 1990 that he skipped the clay court season that’s played before the tour moved to the grass and Wimbledon.
Lendl even skipped the French Open in 1990 so he could practice extensively on grass with his coach Australian great Tony Roche. This was a huge sacrifice to win on the grass because Lendl would have been a huge favorite to win on the clay at the French that year (and most years since clay suited his game so incredibly well).
It all seemed to be working because Lendl beat McEnroe and Becker to win the prestigious lead up tournament to Wimbledon played at the Queens Club in London.
Lendl was as prepared as he could have been but he met Edberg in the semifinals (Becker played a young Goran Ivanisevic in the other semifinal). Whereas Lendl nearly beat Becker in five sets the year before, Edberg won in 3 straight forward sets.
All of that preparation, hard work, and missing out on adding another French Open title to his legendary resume was for naught because Edberg used his tremendous athleticism to smother the net and cut off the best of Lendl’s passing shots. And when Lendl attacked the net, Edberg was equal to the task hitting winning passing shots and service return winners.
Edberg’s serve and volley simply overwhelmed Lendl with Edberg winning 6-1, 7-6, 6-3. When Edberg was in the zone he covered the net with catlike reflexes and superb volleys that painted the lines.
Lendl said afterwards that he had had a better chance the year before against Becker because he didn’t know what he could have done or how he could have beaten Edberg on that semifinal day.

To this day I like watching Edberg play, just because so many of his strokes - the volleys in particular - are just textbook perfect. They're like the videos your tennis coach has you watch, saying "THIS is how you hit a volley."

Yes, thats what made me interested in Tennis when I way younger, Edberg, Becker, Sampras.... today the guys rally a lot, but the proper Sever & Volley Style was actually even nicer to watch. All my respect to Edberg who put skill and touch over power....surely one of the most artistic players out there!

@@istellepretorius8618 Same here. With which match did you experience that the most? For me it was the loss of the 1989 RG final against Chang. The second was the 1991 Wimbledon SF against Stich. and the third was the 1992 final against Lendl, when he had to retire with an abdominal injury.
@@Federerfan22 - the Chang loss for sure.. becze that was the one Grand Slam he couldnt write behind his name and that year was his best chance to Win at Roland Gaross. The three consecutive Wimbledon Finals he played against Becker..... he lost the one final.
And of course the loss against Lendl 🙈🙈🙈 that broke my heart .
@@istellepretorius8618 Yes, I was at a snack bar during the final game. It was heartbreaking. His best chance for sure, after just having beaten Becker in the SF, in five sets. That loss to Stich prevented four in a row. My happiest moment was that 1990 win at Wimbledon. Especially after he was 3-1 and almost 4-1 down in the final set.

What a legend
Thank you TennisTV, I needed this. Edberg was my first tennis hero, inspiration and prime example of sportsmanship on court. Favourite moments were him winning Wimbledon 1990 vs Becker, then there was his utter annihilation of Courier at the USO 1991 and finally his marathon performances at USO 1992 where he won 3 consecutive 5 setters vs Krajicek, Lendl, Chang before taking down Sampras in finals in four. His footwork, backhand and athleticism were immense, volleys played with surgical precision and serves high kicking. Thank you for the great memories 🙌🎾🇸🇪
Man, The 1992 US Open was his last Slam and what a Warrior effort! Coming from behind in 4 matches, the dark horse in the final and still found a way to win the title...
Edberg added so much excitement to the game. His serve-and volley game was more exciting when their were fewer adherents.

McEnroe´s was better.
Edberg is my fav player of all time, no doubt. One point of criticism here though is no mention of Lendl. Sampras and Lendl were the two best players Edberg had to face, and Lendl was far more prominent in Edberg's career. To mention lesser players like Courier and Agassi, but not to mention Lendl is really weird. I get why you mentioned Becker of course because of their long rivalry (usually for second place behind Lendl).
I modeled my serve after him even though I wasn't even born yet when he played on tour.

Best net player EVER. Pete was a better serve and volleyer, but no one in history closed and covered the net like Stefan.
I personally would say Pete was a better server but not a better serve AND VOLLEYER
@@whyaskwhy000 Let me clarify what I mean: I mean that his practice of that style as a whole, serve and volley, was more powerful and effective than Stefan's, hence being "better". But I don't think Petros as great as he was, was on the same level as Stefan as a volleyer, or really anything net-related. Petros was the greatest all-courter in the Open Era, and Stefan one of the top 3 net players imo

A true great. His backhand volley in particular, may be the finest the modern game has seen.
Edberg’s volleying acumen was pure beauty and while dominating net play was the hallmark of many great tennis players, few in any, were as polished and technically savvy as the Swede. Witnessed him live at Stockholm Open a couple of time.
None cool facts :
Richard Wertheim was an American tennis linesman who suffered a fatal injury on September 10, 1983, during a match at the 1983 US Open. He was injured when Stefan Edberg sent an errant serve directly into his groin. Wertheim was sitting in a chair and officiating at the center line. The blow knocked him backwards and he fell out of the chair onto the hardcourt surface, striking his head and he died later.
Where is this beautiful tennis today? The one-handed backhand is not even taught anymore. it's all about boom-boom, little grace. Thank you for preserving this precious footage of the old school.

One odd piece of trivia is that in 1983 when playing Boy's Single Final of the US Open Stefan Edbergs serve actually struck linesman Richard Wertheim so badly in the groin that the linesman fell on his head, and later died from his injuries. The linesman has his own Wikipedia-page under the name Dick Wertheim.
Stefan Edberg, one of the most elegant players ever...had a great flair for the game, no doubt about it.

I still remember my childhood days, when he played a few days here in the Philippines.
Edberg Vs Becker 1988 -I think had some long rallies at net ,while Edberg Vs Chang 1989 along with Edberg Vs Becker 1989 Final ATP Year End had some interesting points too. Tennis was very unpredictable those days with contrasting styles then with Lendl, Chang, Agassi , Courier, Connors Vs Edberg, Stich. Becker and Sampras ,Mc Enroe , Tennis in 1986-1996 had lot of legends

I loved watching Becker and Edberg at Wimbledon those three years. Was gutted when he got beaten by Stich in 91.
Interesting fact about the Becker Edberg rivalry. Becker won more finals, but Edberg won more of the majors ('That is the statistic I would like to change' Becker joked when he was told this)

The era of players who can serve and volley effortlessly - Edberg, Becker, Navratilova, Sabatini, Novotna - will unfortunately never happen again. I'm part sad the era is over, but I'm happy that it actually happened.

@Tennis TV In 90's there are 2 legends qualified for ATP tour final for 6-consecutive years, Sampras and Chang. Pete Sampras, no question one of the greatest indoor players along with Becker. From 90-00 winning 5 times. Chang also qualified Tour Final from 92-97 consecutively 6-year. His game was not well-suited to fast indoor surface, still had incredible run at Frankfurt in 95, beating Muster, Courier and defending champion Sampras along the way to the final, only lost to home favorite Becker.
By any chance, could you post matches or highlights about that incredible run 95 in Frankfurt? Thank You!

My favorite "Modern" players ever, Mac and Stefan. I feel like Stefan knew John was so happy to see him beat Sampras as a S/V player. Stefan figured out how to beat John too but unfortunately for myriad reasons this was after John had peaked in early '85.
