- Leonardo da Vinci, the famous Italian artist and polymath who lived during the high renaissance changed the world in a huge way. He is best known for his painting the Mona Lisa, which is the most famous piece of art in the world. Many believe Leonardo da Vinci - Polymath to be one of the greatest artists and painters ever to live, and this is probably true. But Leonardo da Vinci was so much more than just one of the greatest artists. He was an architect, an astronomer, a botanist, a cartographer, an engineer, a geologist, a hydrodynamicist, a mathematician, a musician, a theatre producer, a scientist, an inventor and much, much more. Leonardo was a pioneer in so many different areas and he truly was a genius.
Born in 1452, Leonardo da Vinci lived for 67 years, dying in 1519. Most people only think of him in the context of the Mona Lisa, but he gave the world so much more than just one of the world’s greatest paintings. His notebooks are stuffed full of so much amazing information, observations and inventions that we’re still learning from today, over 500 years later. Leonardo daVinci was a polymath in its purest form and embodied everything great about the renaissance. He produced art that was easily comparable and often better than Michelangelo, Raphael, Donatello or Botticelli, whilst also being a leading intellectual making discoveries in so many different areas. Leonardo da Vinci was perhaps one of the greatest, most talented people ever to live.

No, Leonardo didn't design, invent or create anything. He was a painter. That's it. Everything he is given credit for he copied from two books published before he was even born.

The only problem is, those codices, anyone prolific reader knows he didn't create them. He copied them. Then used them to look for work. Which, when employed he couldn't complete the projects he was hired to do. Nevada he didn't know how. He copied them from Mariano Taccalo. Who published two books about machines, canals, water management, parachutes, flying machines, vitruvian man, etc a generation before Leo was born. The only people whom believe Leo a great inventor or genius are people whom do not read.
But you are correct. Just because Leonardo said he was a vegetarian doesn't mean he actually was. Just newscaster Leo said he was not straight and was in love with Thomas doesn't mean he actually was. But if we can't go by his word and the word of his contemporaries, what do we have left?

This documentary was captivating and emotional. Leonardo da Vinci may very will be the most talented person ever. A Man hundreds of years ahead of his time.
I agree he was probably the most gifted person ever. It's extremely rare to have someone with such scientific ability, philosophical wisdom while having the heart, hands and soul of an artist. At least he is remembered appropriately.
He was a talented man but the claims of him being a serious inventor are overblown. His designs not only didn't work in his time, because of materials, they wouldn't work now. I mean, he gets an A for thinking them up, but they didn't work.
A talent is a measure of wealth. ( 1 talent of gold) I don't think he was the richest man ever. In fact today we would call him an eccentric, a loony or a barn shed scientist.

The way he was able to achieve and conceive of so many things from so many different paths of life is truly awesome.
If he was studying his books, he wouldn't be this way. His interest outside helped him a lot.
If anything, this shows how a child should be encouraged to pursue interests and areas of curiosity rather than discouraged because you want them to do something else. I think he is so famous today because maybe all the ideas weren't his own originally but he developed and most importantly documented them.
Right? It seems like he had a very supportive family. Imagine if we all had that. Those who do are very lucky.
I agree with you whole heartedly. I just had a conversation with a friend of mine who mentioned how “advanced” my 9 year old grandson is. We discussed how my son doesn’t simply rely upon the school to educate my grandson. My grandson spends time with me (his grandfather), his great grandmother, his mom and dad as well as several aunts and uncles and his other grandparents. He is encouraged to explore all sorts of interests and is given plenty of opportunities to learn about things not covered in his school. Also my son keeps an eye on the homework the school assigns as well as checking in on the teachers on a regular basis for insight as to the curriculum being taught. I help him with learning things that are above his grade level so that he isn’t held back by the school having to stick to a certain pace for each subject. For instance my grandson happens to be naturally good at math so I am teaching him math that the school won’t get around to until several grades above the one he is in now. Another subject he has a huge interest in is space and everything that comes with that. So last Christmas I got him a really good telescope as well as a number of books about space and the universe including planets and stars and blackholes etc. My point is that as a family we encourage him and support him as much as we can, we do the same for all of the grandchildren in our family. Some of them are very much into music and play various instruments, a few love art and draw or paint as much as they like. Overall we as a family don’t expect the schools to be able to give each and every child the attention and support they need and deserve. So we do a lot for our children and grandchildren outside of the school setting. Lots of field trips to museums and art festivals as well as spending time outdoors in the forest and streams all over the Pacific Northwest. Next year I’m taking my grandson with me to England for 2 months to spend time with our family that lives there. So he will get to see a lot if things first hand and in person that most children don’t. From roads built by the Romans to cathedrals and some of the greatest museums in the world plus take a ride on a double decker bus lol. We all need to realise that schools just aren’t equipped to give each and every child the individual personalised attention and encouragement that they deserve. Its up to us to do that for our children and grandchildren especially those of us that are retired and have nothing but time on our hands lol
Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is older, he will not depart from it.
@@prepperjonpnw6482 the way you talk about it tells everything! the kids are the future, and i believe if you give them the right tools they can really just go on their own and learn to. school today is very toxic and limited. it takes away your creative part. in school i was bored to death and yeah i had this feeling like somebody wanted to choke me with boredom. its like i cant force anything myself, sometimes i just read about something and think about it. and 1 week later it comes all by itself. i think its better for kids to explore and fail. but these days failing is a bad thing. and thats why i really dont like the schools, its feels so forced and they dont let you do anything other than the material they give you wich is sad. takes away the exploring-creative parts. you should get Sciencia mathermatics, physics, chemistry biology, and the astronomy for all - designa technical secrets of the traditional visual arts - Trivium the classical liberal arts of grammar, logic & rhetoric . you should really look into them and buy them, if the material in them is to advanced you can still just search up stuff in the book wich is less advanced

Nothing close to learning about Da Vinci than through Leonardo himself. I had no idea until recently that he wrote down his thoughts on art and life in his codexes. He inspired me so much that I actually made an online Leonardo da Vinci Masterclass. He'll always be an Immortal Mentor to me.
After reading about Da Vinci online and browsing his artworks, I searched his name on TH-cam to learn more. This video far surpassed what I was hoping to know! Thank you for this excellent piece of work on this man.

We have many people who are just as creative and inventive as da Vinci. Most of them are marginalized and ridiculed and do not have the wealthy patron that Leonardo enjoyed. I myself have ran my own business, written 6 screenplay, I paint on canvas, I have several inventions waiting for patents and I also do computer art. I also work on cars and other machinery. Still can't find interest of others as they hate it when I outline my accomplishments. Maybe I should have left Canada. I blame our education system that trains people to be good employees rather than inventive entrepreneurs . Look around you, there are people like him everywhere.

@@chasingbirds3073 Yeah the guy reeks of unfounded arrogance lol. He does bring up a good point though as they're have people who seem to have a similar almost terrifying level of inventiveness. Two of the names that come to mind are Imhotep and Nikola Tesla but while knowledge on the former remain rather limited, Tesla has received a resurgence in popularity recently which is really good. I'm possible there are people just as inventive as Da Vinci and the others I mentioned but they are likely few and far between, being snuffed out by the world's shitty educational systems and possibly not old enough to really make a difference yet. We may just have to wait for now.

Can't really say he's master of none when if you rank the most expensive paintings of all time, his work will probably occupy the 1 to 10 spot (that is if anyone is foolish enough to sell one of his paintings)

Of all the things Leonardo did, I'm most impressed with how he created such an accurate map of Milan using measuring equipment made by himself. To create such an accurate aerial view while keeping both feet on the ground is breathtaking.

Most of Tesla patents were already invented before him. Only thing that made him famous is that he was American and America dominated the world’s culture. He was not the inventor of Alternating current. He was wrong at many places. He never believed in electron. He assumed that earth has no electric resistance. Today people defines genius as someone who is really good at a topic/thing they are passionate about, but not always how curious they are to learn more about other fields than their preferred one. Leonardo was more of a renaissance hyperintellectual with his way of mastering all the fields he was drawn into and his observance to details that made him think wider and more complex than anyone else in history.

Sadly children are being told that the only way is to go to college or university which deteriorates authenticity

Two of the reasons that the Mona Lisa was a striking painting even back then was that it was a portrait painted outdoors. And that it was “an unknown” woman of no distinction. Only people of wealth nobility or royalty high portraits painted of them back then. And you can’t emphasize enough the fact that Leonardo was really the first famous flamboyant artist personality. He really created the whole cult of personality regarding artists who back then of course as you mentioned were considered craftsman. Thank you for the excellent biography.

I've read a bit about da Vinci, but had absolutely no idea he pioneered so much in so many different fields. People tend to downplay the notebooks, saying a lot of his technical ideas were interesting but inaccurate or not workable in practice. I'm astonished at how much *was* workable, or would have been with more advanced technology. The advanced anatomical stuff, the map-drawing, the study of flight, the architectural visions, and on and on...the mind boggles.
Truly one of the greatest minds in history.

I'm left handed and in my formative school years I wrote in mirror form and right to left. I did it because it was natural and only started writing left to write through teachers influence. I can still write both ways and I guess it was the same for Leonardo - the natural way and the trained way.

the fact that he bought birds at the markets and set them free and that he recognized that all animals have feelings exactly the same as we humans do makes me love him! (edit to add: I think the reason he didn't have a conflict to design weapons is because unlike other animals, humans aren't blameless and he probably was trying to help those who needed it to defend themselves) ... Leonardo was a typical creative person - many of his projects remained unfinished, abandoned when he reached a point where he lost interest. The creative process being more important than the end result.
Interesting! I can relate as I often have multiple projects in the works. Sometimes having to force myself to finish them.
Like my albums ouch.When I heard he had a hard time focusing as a child I thought damn he had ADHD.Now rebranded as VAST..Variable attention span trait..more apt because we can hyperfocus if we are interested .but if bored can't finish a sentence.
He was ADHD to a tea. One of his manuscripts was on the verge of a monumental mathematics breakthrough. Acknowledged and wrote too bad my tea is getting cold. ADHD asss fuuuuuuck

See now that’s so beautiful how his uncle saw how his mind couldn’t stay on focus so he sent him out to attract attention by other things and helped his creative process mindset with that of more, not staying trapped inside and boxed in. This is how so many more could be able to explore so much more. Just that one seeing them in a better light and more they can be, not limited to what others think that we all should be. Thank you for this video and encouragement of more in my own ways of becoming able to express myself in ways I’ve never heard or been guided.
This is such a beautifully made video. I teared up so many times, since I love Leonardo so much, he was such an incredible person. This video deserves so much more attention, it’s very clear and straight to the point and would be nice to watch for someone that has no clue about what he did. Ahh I’m still just once again thinking of the genius this man was. He’s the true definition of a polymath.

An interesting and instructive video: my only criticism is the overbearing music which threatened to drown the narrative. Also after taking pains to demonstrate Leonardo was left handed the actor was shown writing with his right. Otherwise it was very good.

I see da Vinci's story as a testament to what happens when we remove barriers to creativity. How many people throughout history were born with gifts of this level, but they were peasants, field workers, or worse - women? How much raw talent was smothered because of humanity's horrendous misogyny and bigotry. Even with da Vinci, imagine if a Medici had not been caught up in his sodomy scandal - da Vinci may have wasted away in prison or been executed.
Even today, how many da Vincis are wasting their talents in dead-end, low paying jobs, struggling to pay rent while taking care of children or parents? No time to rest, much less quench their insatiable curiosity and creativity. It seemed like da Vinci struggled with ADHD and depression. Now he would be put on pharmaceuticals, numbed into compliance so he could keep grinding away at a purposeless existence.
The freedom to explore and express this level of creativity is a privilege still afforded only to a few, even today. In a just society, it would be available to everyone. Imagine how much we would all benefit if all the da Vincis in our day-to-day lives were allowed to invent and create to their fullest potential.
you're right. I don't know if you know the story of Artemisia Gentileschi she was a talented painter around the same time but was rejected by every studio in Florence because she was female. They made a movie about her I don't know if historically accurate or not.

There are millions of people who still live in systems that negate them even the basic rights and practically live in an imprisoned condition so they can't express their talent. And remember that the history books were written by people and many times those people did write what they wanted depending on their condition sex culture affiliations or what the person they served wanted. In recent years historians have changes their views on so many things they discovered that roman emperors like Catilina and Nero weren't the monsters they were depicted to be in the ancient texts for instance they discovered that ancient Egypt had more than one female pharaon (and how many people do you think know this?) and I could go on and this is because history has been manipulated for millenia. So you can be cancelled from history if someone with power wanted and the same people or oppressive cultures can prevent you from doing anything meaningful in your life.
Even with the finest schooling you will never see it again Justin.. because the work is done, the low hanging fruit is gone and we learn more in a classroom setting than he did in his entire life. He would spend months puzzling over something we take for granted in knowing. Practicing that deep critical thinking and curiosity for a lifetime is what sets him apart. We simply do not need it and it's why despite our huge population, there will never be another genius of this level while we have access to instant information. What we practice is the opposite of creativity and curiosity... rote memorization of those who have come before us. The geniuses of today are just those who have the capacity to remember the most, and they will ultimately contribute nothing new.

You never stop learning or questioning things around, Leonardo is a man I would have loved to know, and is the most interesting and genius person to have ever lived. If I could travel in time I would leave today and go and meet the legend that is Leonardo Da Vinci.
