There's interesting history behind this model. Go back to the 1970s, the engineers in charge of figuring out if it was even possible to launch the shuttle from a 747, were modelers. NASA Huston was one of the largest clubs in the country. It was cheaper to build a scale model of both the 747 and shuttle and see what happened. They learned by trial and error until the found the right combination to safely release the shuttle and not touch the 747. They demonstrate the technique to their bosses and got the OK to modify the real 747 and air launch Enterprise, the full scale shuttle. It all worked perfectly, all by some crazy rc modelers. It was all in an old RCM magazine article.
Little story, When I was stationed in Wichita Kansas, the Kansas ANG was across the ramp, and that baby was parked off to the side. What an amazing aircraft, amazing model you have as well!!
Thanks! It has certainly been a long project, and hopefully I’ll finish the Shuttle up in the next few months. The video was filmed at the Remote Possibilities RC Club in St. George, UT
Wow, other than the tail, didn't realize it would need that many mods to represent a shuttle launcher. Although I'm not that familiar with the variants of the "747". Great flight, the thrust reverse was a handy/needed thing to have. AH ...
Awesome project. Well done
Can't wait to see the shuttle launch from it! 👍
That is a nice build! Very cool.
Michael is good people. Love hanging out with him at events here in Texas.

That is a large part of what inspired this project. I saw the RC models on display in the JSC Museum.
It was on the cover of a Flying Models magazine. I believe I still have it. The 747 had only two K&B 65s if I'm not mistaken.

love the former AA livery
ffs that racer won't let us appriceiate the sound of the plane... -_-
Great job on this shuttle carrier. Can’t wait to see shuttle launch from this B747. Where was this video filmed?

I have literally had the idea to build this plane for a very long time
Now I want to see someone do an E-4B…
Send the creator a email, sure he can modify the airframe
