    So the banks value was based on the speculative nature of the company’s stock they were loaning money to, so if those companies couldn’t repay the loans, the values of their stock went down, so it was a double whammy. How cool was that?

    • @tenglim4406
      @tenglim4406 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No?! Because the exact value of the bank, in reality, is based on the return of their investments (e.g. loans and bank-held investments) and their nature of business (e.g. the investment bank vs traditional bank) instead of the speculative nature of its stock, in which it is subjected to market nature and some other factors (e.g. short sellers)?!

    • @avernvrey7422
      @avernvrey7422 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's not it. There's no double whammy. If the borrower defaulted then the bank suffered that default, that's it. The warrants are just extra icing, if the company does well, the warrants are worth a lot, if the company fails, the warrants didn't cost the bank anything and they don't matter. SVB's stock value was tied to its own net income potential.

    Never reinforce failure! Taxing sound banks that are carefully balancing their exposure to risk in order to bail out unsound banks who pursued a risky strategy is the opposite of what the Fed ought to do. The conditions for the bail out should be so onerous to the banks’ officers and share holders that the remaining health banks analyze their strategy and avoid unjustified exposures.

    This is actually fair information. The New York Times didn't even touch on this subject and made it look like a minor error without going into who the bank actually was. However, I will say the light on the video makes me think more positive of SVB overall. They were trying to drive innovation. The fact is, we're not communists, and the government doesn't fund all innovation and this is supposed to be an American strength. With knowing this the government should help them out and I will support that. You have to bail them out because you're actually bailing out real people. Point is, they shouldn't have to had to do the bond trick. Just my opinion.

    • @stevidente
      @stevidente ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only a slight loss of under 10 percent if any. Companies usually keep funds at multiple banks so unless there is a contagion, it should be fine. A working capital line of credit should tide the companies over. The outstanding loans can be sold to other banks, returning funds to SVB. Having worked with distressed assets, I know there is always a market for everything no matter how bad the asset looks now. The seller will just have to accept the haircut.

      Treasuries are only risk free if you never intend to sell them. The prices still fluctuate based on market demand. SVB was forced to sell at a loss to cover withdrawals.
      If you buy a Treasury bond for $100 that yields 2%, it will yield 2% until it expires, you will not lose money. But if the Treasury issues new bonds that yield 4%, if you needed to sell your 2% bond to get fast cash it would only be worth $50.

      Banks borrow short and lend long. They often borrow, for example, by taking demand deposits, such as checking and savings deposits, which must be paid back whenever depositors ask for them. On the other hand, most of the money they lend out is tied up in long-term loans, such as mortgages.
      any bank that strays from this formula will fail.

  • @Tential1

    Damn, you're fast. I got through all of this info and wrote an article, but you've already finished a video. Some other points I would have touched on, but good job. Core thing is exactly what I came to. The bank had basically no equity as of year end, and any person who opened the financials would panic. The financials were released recently, so that's why people freaked. And if you've done this work, you probably know of the other banks on brink of collapse too. Lol... This actually is a little wild..... We could be royally f'd.

    The real question is: Who Profits from such crashes? Clearly SVB has been attacked with negative publicity whilst it is not alone in the bond quandary. The FBI should be seeking to determine the cause of this run before it becomes a criminal epidemic. Institutions fare well as long as they play together, when they break such as now there is a reason .... and it can be found in the output of those who called the run in the first place. Their motive? they can and they did! Such is the weakness of the system today and the recklessness of unfettered leverage. Anyway the bottom line is that investing in Bonds is a pretty way of surviving the day to day and only 'poor' institutions do so. It is now blindingly obvious how to identify the weak ones in the herd. The questions is of how to exploit them. Answers on a Post Card 🙂

This one was a FDIC can help the 10% (>250k) but when 4 or 5 more fail - even the FDIC won’t be solvent, so they will have to PRINT more money. Contagion is deep here. And FED profits most.
