Thank you for this pattern; I have started knitting it and I so appreciate your giving us Row 11 that makes it look neat. It is going to look like a quality piece. I'm a long way from finishing but I love it already.
I finally finished my first Spiral Scarf! Thank you so much Staci, it was only with your help and this video that I was able to do it. You are a terrific teacher!
Emily Kim - to answer your first question, I don't recommend changing the cast on number. If you do that, you can lose the distinct spiral shape. The amount of yarn I used for this scarf is in the free downloadable pattern, and on my website. You can get your copy of the pattern by following the link on screen, or the link in the video description field just below the video.
Thank you for taking the time to reply, Staci. You were very helpful, and I appreciate it very much. (I can only imagine what an incredibly busy woman you must be!)
First off, you're a really great teacher. I enjoyed watching that immensely. Second off, this looks like a neat pattern that I'll definitely try out soon. Thank you much!
Hi, I was looking for a spiral scarf to make and found your tutorial. You are exactly right, the pattern is easy to learn and remember the rows. I love the way it is turning out. I wanted to practice with a different yarn first before using my "special" yarn. The practice one is looking good. Can't wait to get started with the special one. Thank you for the pattern and showing how to knit it. I'm a visual learner and all of your tutorials are so great. I have been able to learn so many technics from them. Thank you again.
Hi and thank you from Newfoundland Canada for all your videos. I'm fairly new to knitting and have been wanting to try one of these scarves and your video gave me the courage except I was having problem finding that Twisted Stitch and upon searching for more help I came across a video that shows if you slip that Stitch to your right needle you can distinctly see the rap, pick it up put it on the right needle flick it with your finger until it is in the right position then back to your left needle and knit. And and it really helps with the tension it's not as tight. Thank you again for all your help, I can't wait to see my finished scarf
If you're following the video and picking up the wraps correctly, it could just be that you're having a little tension issue. If you're using a wool or a wool blend, try applying some steam (from a steam iron, without pressing down) and smooth out the stitches when the scarf is still warm and wet from the steam. That should help! Good luck!
Some superwash wools go nuts when you get them wet, and stretch out like crazy. But for most yarns, I think this spiral shape will hold. The twists may end up being longer and further apart, but still a spiral. Another bit of advice - even if the yarn is superwash, it's always best to hand wash your knits, if you can. After you put so many hours into making something, it's best to treat it gently. :)
Yes - you can use whatever fiber type you like (including acrylic), the pattern will still work. I don't know exactly how many repeats you'll need to do before you start seeing the spiral shape, but you should start seeing it after 5" or so of knitting.
I just had a hank of a selfstriping yarn waiting for the right project over there!!^_^ Thanks...you are soooo pretty and now even more professional but always nice ;D You make me like the garter stitch that I've always hated!
First up - please be sure you are working from the written pattern. It is a free download. You can get the pattern by clicking the link in the video description field, just below the video. The pattern repeat is 12 rows long, which is clear in the pattern. You repeat those 12 rows until you get the length you want.
Love your videos! Would love to see a close up of how you hold your yarn in your right hand, as you only move your index finger! That would be a great tutorial. But back to this, can the Japanese short row you show in another video be substituted for the W&T?
+Karen Favreau - here is my video on "flicking": th-cam.com/video/y547Q5Hjcuo/w-d-xo.html I hold the yarn in a "fist" with my right ring and pinkie fingers. Most people prefer to wrap the yarn around their pinkie for tension. Here is my video on Japanese Short Rows: th-cam.com/video/qR6IgBRcV5Y/w-d-xo.html
Working on my scarf now :) thx for the pattern! Staci :) ( also have 2 other projects of yours on my needles hahaha, cropped cardigan is halfway done, and top down socks one is done )
can we use German short rows instead of wrap and turn? I assume if the answer is yes, we would do the short row stitch on stitches 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14, correct? I also imagine that another way to make sure that you are knitting the short rows on the right side is to note the location of the cast on tail? I love the scarf, and also love the suggestion to splurge on that luxury yarn that one has always wanted!
Hi Staci! I was wondering if I could double the cast tons because I'm using size four needles. If I'm not able to do that, is there a way I could double it? or would it be fine just doing it the way you did it even though my needles are smaller? Thank you!
Hi! You are way more advanced than I am but I love your tutorials! I'm trying the spiral scarf, the part where you pick up the wraps is confusing, can you make a video with that part really close up please?
Hello. Love the scarf and the pattern is so easy. But wherever I have a wrap there is a little hole left behind, like a yarn over for a lace pattern. I started pulling on the working yarn after the turn thinking that would solve the issue, but it hasn't. Am I doing something wrong?
+Jessica Buero - if your tension is good throughout the rest of the scarf, it is likely that your gauge is a bit loose...meaning your needle size is too large for the yarn you're using. Regardless, if you're using wool or a wool blend, your scarf will look better after washing and blocking.
I am the same.. I knitted one but have realised i have been picking wrong bit up but looks way better than teh one i am doing right.. not sure what I am doing wrong either
Ellen - yes. Currently the antivirus software called Avast is giving false-positive virus warnings on my website. I have tried to fix it, and have tried to work with customer service as well. No luck. Rest assured, there is no virus on my website.
This is really confusing! Can you please help? When I finish all the things you showed in the video,do I have to carry on knitting normally or do I have to start again all from the rows from the beginning. Can you please answer my question because I really don't know what to do and I really want to make it!Thank you very much!L❤ve your channel and videos
I am knitting the spiral and I don't understand why I am doing the row where you knit two stitches together. I am doing it: I just don't understand it. If you have a chance, please answer...

Love your teaching skills..you keep it simple and don't talk it to death.
Knitted this for a friend and she really liked it. It's really well written and fun to make. Thanks for posting!
I've just made a start with this pattern and can't wait to finish. This will be the first of many very pink knits :D Thanks for your awesome content.

Thank you! this is the best tutorial on potato chip scarves I've seen so far!
Thank you for taking the time to make this video! It is just the thing I needed to make a fashionable scarf for my friend this holiday season!

Sorry - I don't know what you mean. Are you asking about the cast-on, the first loops on the needle?
When the scarf is finished, do you recommend steam blocking? What washing instructions is preferred and would it regain shape?
i mader one for my best friend and she LOVED it!

Love how this project has started for me but picking up those stitches is hard work
Fantastic
Perfect way to teach
Thanks for sharing

Donna Wilkins - I have a video on that already! Here you go: th-cam.com/video/-xaz41JTkLc/w-d-xo.html
Awesome!! Thank you
Could you substitute German Short Rows for the wrap & turn? I made your Toe Up GSR socks, and MUCH preferred the GSR to the wrap & turn.
Yes, you can substitute GSRs for the wrap & turns.
Love this pattern! I'm using chenille for a more fluffy scarf. Do I use any bind off method?
You can just use a normal bind-off for this pattern.
Hi, I'd like to try this using the Japanese short row rather than the wrap and turn. Could you explain how?
Knitting intrigues me. I'm gonna learn!!

And I was wondering how much yearn you used; I saw a comment earlier, but you did not reply. Thank you!
I tried to find the pattern while watching the video but couldn’t locate it. How to go about it? Help.

Gorgeous sweater!

Hello, if I knit this with a superwash wool, will the scarf still have that shape after washing in the washing machine? Thanks!
I really love your videos.
hi, just wanted to ask how much yarn would i need for this type of scarf?
I cannot seem to down load this or any free patterns
In a pattern I had a while ago it said to incr. every st in the rows to get this scarf.
Can you use acrylic yarn? How many repeats does it take to start getting a spiral effect?
This is really confusing! Can you please help? When I finish all the things you showed in the video,do I have to carry on knitting normally or do I have to start again all from the rows from the beginning. Can you please answer my question because I really don't know what to do and I really want to make it!Thank you very much!L❤ve your channel and videos
Sorry to ask but I am a beginner so could you please tell me what the knots that you did are called?
Thank you sooo much!
Staci, I'm having issues. Everytime I pick up a wrap it looks very messy on one side...am I doing something wrong?
Me too. Help!
Me too. So I just don't pick up the wraps. I just knit across rows 11 and 12.
does it have to be that wrap and turn way
I am knitting the spiral and I don't understand why I am doing the row where you knit two stitches together. I am doing it: I just don't understand it. If you have a chance, please answer...
The row with the k2togs is necessary, because you are picking up the wraps you created, and knitting them together with the stitch that was wrapped.
What is the reason behind the wrap and turn? Knitting the wrap and stitch just seems a pain in the patoot. Is there a cosmetic reason?
The turn allows shaping in the work (to make the spiral), the wrap keeps there from being a hole in the work when you turn.
Does anyone else hear the video game in the background as she is knitting the first row?? PEW PEW!! :)
Can you use japanese short row
I think it's called a potato chip scarf because it's Ruffled (Ruffles potato chips?) I think?

OMG MY NAME IS HAZEL
Nice project.
Easy spital scarf cast on stitches then knit 2 stitches then slip 1 stitch from right side and knit it and knit . Follow spiral pattern
Mine looks weird when I stop watching your moves.... Could you keep knitting at least 1 row more than in the videos?? thank you!!
All of the information you need to knit this is in the free pattern, and on my website. Just follow the link below the video in the video description field to be whisked away to my website. Hope that helps!
How to find printed pattern
The link is there in the video description, I'll paste it here: verypink.com/2012/06/27/learn-to-knit-a-spiral-scarf/
شكرا لك شرحك سهل مبسط
Why do you have to wrap?
Because you're changing direction in the middle of a row...without the wrap, there would be a hole in the work.
It might be called potato chip because it has rrrrruffles. Just a guess.
