  • Run 8 train simulator finally, FINALLY... has a new locomotive. This new boah comes in the form of the EMD MP15 (likely the early DC variant) in liveries such as CSX, BNSF, Amtrak, Union Pacific and the standard Run 8 Western in this first pack - which of course means there'll be 78 more.
    So lesgo crack it open!

The sounds are from actual MP15's working on Tacoma Rail. A big Thanks to the folks at Tacoma Rail for allowing sounds to be recorded

Well, there's recording sounds and then editing them into a game etc
Plenty of folks take real sound recordings and put them in TSC but dont sound right
Or Tacoma rail must have the cleanest most well kept tier800 emissions preventatives
They sound the right path but missing that distinct raspy chug

What were they recorded with? A potato? Then the engine was also not under any sort of load, too? The sounds are shit mate

@thetrainshop your valid to your own personal opinion but the way you worded things are more in a way of an insult you can choose if you want to purchase the mp15s or not don't have to be so vulgar can word it in a much better way then it's Shit.

Thanks for reviewing Shaun. We have been after a switcher for ages in Run 8 and they finally delivered. Sounds, well the only thing I have to compare with is the MP15 as DLC on the Peninsula Corridor in TSW, one of the reasons to keep going back to that route! Still going to be a Day One purchase for me, looking forward to putting them in action on the various Bakersfield branches. Thanks to John, Brad and the team for finally giving us a new loco to play with, maybe the sounds can be revisited in due course.

And yes the EMD645-12 is a totally different set of audio from our existing EMD645-16 bank, came off a real MP15, granted it was not under load but I'm guessing that wasn't possible at the time. I'm grateful to the good folks at Tacoma Rail nonetheless. Actually, the only loco we ever could record under load was the 70ACe due to the fact we knew a hostler pretty well and he was able to take it off by itself and record it in self-loading mode.

    • @ErickC
      @ErickC 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Recording not under load isn't actually a big deal if you record from multiple locations. The major differences under load are:
      1. The RPM will be slightly lower at any given notch (that's the simulator's problem, not the sound developer's problem)
      2. The exhaust sound will be reduced in volume
So if you record like you normally would for the primary streams, then also record a second set of samples close to the exhaust pipes, then you can blend the exhaust noise in at an increased volume and nobody's going to know the difference. Even better practice is to have the exhaust samples on separate audio streams modulated with engine load, since the exhaust noise should vary with exhaust flow rather than engine RPM. In Open Rails, I ape it by controlling the frequency curve with engine RPM but the exhaust volume with throttle position so the noise cuts when the throttle cuts. I'd wager there's a way to do it in Run8 as well.
I think most people criticizing the blower sound fail to realize that the 6-567, 12-567, 6-645, and 12-645 run the blowers at a lower RPM because they don't need as much scavenging air.

The sim was supposed to load the Run8 one as a placeholder like we do with all the other locomotive types, but I made a typo in the code and so that's why it's not showing properly. It'll get fixed shortly.

The blower sound is accurate. The roots blower runs at a lower RPM on the multiples-of-6 engines than on the multiples-of-8 engines because the engines with fewer cylinders require less scavenging, but still require enough that a single blower is not adequate. The 8-645E can get by on a single blower on the higher RPM schedule, which is why SW1000s sound closer to GP38s. This convention is true of both the 567 and the 645. See the "History and Development of the 567 Series General Motors Locomotive Engine" paper widely available on the internet. Since the SW1500 and MP15 series use the 12-645E engine, they run the blowers at the reduced RPM compared to a 16-645 engine (be it an E block, BC block, or C block).
Where the sounds fall short is that you can tell they were recorded at extreme close proximity to the engine hood, so the block and blower sounds dominate due to their proximity to the recording source. This in and of itself isn't a problem so long as you also record exhaust noise and blend this in. In fact, since exhaust noise should vary with exhaust flow, it's good practice to record it separately and then have it occupy its own audio streams with their own parameters for volume control. The other problem with such a close-in recording is that the whole picture of the engine sounds much different at a distance as certain frequencies attenuate and others do not. This is why I record separate distant samples and blend them with distance. I work in other platforms, and I don't know if Run8 supports this.
In short: the sounds are perfectly accurate for an observer sitting right next to the hood in a certain spot, in fact, they did a better job of blending together the different samples across the RPM range of the engine than most developers do.
The model looks okay in detail, but the cab windows are very wrong, as are the tops of the hoods as you noted. The sideframes on the trucks also look very strange to me in a way I can't quite describe. I think this is a textbook case of the classic 3D model trap of focusing on the details before focusing on getting the basics right.

I have no experience with using the server, nor finding like-minded individuals that may be interested in operations. I have all the routes on the West coast, plus the BNSF transcon through the desert. Would you be able to offer any suggestions for a new-be like me, to get started networking with others? I'd certainly appreciate any assistance that you could offer. Thanks Much! -Paul
