The reason he refused to kill the bear was because it was just a cub that had been chained to a tree.

Artur to answer a few of your questions. Teddy refused to shot both a bear and a bear cub. When touring the country a tour group chained a grizzly bear to a tree. They offered it to him as a prize, but he refused to shot it as he saw it as unsportsmanlike. Then it's Cubs came out of the woods and he berated them for what they done. Also Teddy was a avid defender of nature and started the US national park system.
Also about his health he was born a sickly child with severe asthma. He actually worked out so hard he basically cured it.

    • @nicholealderfer191
      @nicholealderfer191 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

As someone with severe asthma and who has worked out my whole life it does not cure it. Things trigger asthma, for me respiratory infections, humid weather, and allergies. It is not a constant, and if it is not acting up you can partake in heavy physical activity. I was diagnosed with asthma at twenty nine, I no longer run ten miles a day, but I have a row machine, love spinning and my ultimate favorite swimming, so I can still partake in heavy physical activity.

Teddy's secret was being diagnosed with Asthma and having a competitive spirit. Because of his asthma he was always exercising and trying to prove that his "diagnosis" wasn't a weakness that would stop him. This then reinforced his competitive nature and as a result, he was full of energy. Constantly exercising, fighting, training, and quite the well spoken politician. A true role model for his generation and others to look to as an example of what you can be if you push yourself beyond what are the "limits" of your body.

Teddy Roosevelt's son Theodore Roosevelt Jr. was an interesting man as well. Was wounded in the leg in WWI, lost his younger brother and father in less than a year (Quentin Roosevelt was shot down by a German pilot in 1918) and would go on to an illustrious military career being the first American general ashore on DDay. His actions at Utah Beach got him into the running for the Medal of Honor, but he died of a heart attack in his command post in France on July 28, 1944 before he was to receive it. He was awarded it posthumously, and beat out his father by 54 years, Teddy Sr. getting his on the 100th anniversary of the Battle of San Juan Hill in 1998, the Roosevelts being the 2nd father-son pair to win the MOH after Arthur and Douglas MacArthur (American Civil War and WW2)

Texas is #2 in the United States for both land and population, so it is a large and diverse place. There are many stereotypes about Texas, and some of them are true for some parts of the state, but overall, Texas is a very modern state with various economic interests, which only one of which is agriculture, and is the leading producer of cattle in the United States(it has 16 million head of cattle) but it also leads in many other categories like oil and natural gas production and is a leader in the Information Technology sector. In fact, Dallas was the birthplace of the Integrated Circuit. Texas is a global leader in the Energy sector as well, besides its massive reserves of oil and natural gas, it is also a leader in Solar and Wind power production. Texas is a vast and diverse state, and many parts of the state are rural and "fit the stereotype" but Texas is also one of the most modern and complex economies of the world, and if it was its own country, its economy would be the 10th largest economy in the world, just closely beating out South Korea and Canada. So yes, Texas has many ranches and many cowboys, but it also has many other types of people as well.

a few fun facts about the topics covered, Teddy owned a ranch in the country and in the middle of winter 3 bandits stole his boat which was the only one around for miles and miles. Teddy and a few of his ranch hands built a new boat and sailed after the bandits but had to ditch the boat as did the bandits because the river was partially frozen over. After Teddy and his party captured the bandits Teddy sent his men back to his ranch IN THE BOAT and then WALKED the bandits for days to the nearest town without cuffing them for fear that they would die in the cold if he did. at night while the bandits slept Teddy kept a shotgun aimed at them and stayed up all night by reading poetry like the video said but again he did this for days without sleep, being the only man escorting 3 people who where unrestrained and could have turned on him at any moment.
Next fun fact after Teddy was shot he told the crowd he had been shot and thus had to keep his speech short but as the video said he spoke for 80 some odd minutes, so apparently 80 min is no big deal after being shot. (also even today it is not uncommon for bullets to be left in if the doctors decide it is to dangerous to take out or will cause more trauma to remove than to leave in. My brother is a security guard and was shot in the leg, the hospital left the bullet in his leg, because again it would damage his leg more to remove the bullet rather than leave it in and let the body heal around it. he has no issue with moving around and has no pain 8 months later.)
The last 2 things about Teddy are, he was the first U.S president to win the Nobel Peace Prize. He was given the Nobel for settling a conflict between Russia and Japan, and he also helped settle a conflict between Germany and France. Finally not long before the whole situation with the bandits who stole his boat Teddy lost both his wife and mother on the same day which was what drove him to buy a ranch in the country in the first place.

Roosevelt spared the bear because it was defenceless at the time as seen in this quote "Roosevelt's assistants, led by Holt Collier, a born slave and former Confederate cavalryman, cornered and tied a black bear to a willow tree. They summoned Roosevelt and suggested that he shoot it. Viewing this as extremely unsportsmanlike, Roosevelt refused to shoot the bear. The news of this spread quickly through newspaper articles across the country. The articles recounted the story of the president who refused to shoot a bear." from www.nps.gov/thrb/learn/historyculture/storyofteddybear.htm

Teddy roosevelt was on a bear hunt and they couldn't find any bear to shoot so (I believe some from the press) found a bear cub and tied it up and had teddy stumble across the cub, teddy thought it was wrong to shoot a defenceless cub and told the men to let it go

14:15 the heat from the explosion that propels the bullet kills any bacteria already on it. Unless a piece of cloth or some other object that it hits first is also brought into the wound the risk of infection is low. This is especially true prior to the discovery of antibiotics; had the doctors tried to remove the clean bullet they would be more likely to introduce bacteria an cause an infection.

Im from Texas. There are cowboys in Texas, along with other states, mostly in the great planes. The modern cowboy is not exactly what you would see in old westerns. There aren't bands of cowboys tracking down bandits. They mostly just handle cattle. Move them from one grazing area to another. Take part in rodeos. Ranch work. That sort of thing. They still wear the hat and boots and all but things have modernized in other areas.

@Artur Rehi If a bullet gets lodged in your body, the surgeon makes the call whether to remove it based on the anatomical region of the body where it's stuck. If it's in an area where it will not cause any immediate complications, and if extracting the bullet would increase the risk, they don't extract it. Over time, the human body forms enough scar tissue to encapsulate the bullet and protects itself from further problems. As is the case with foreign bodies, the bullet may also come out naturally if it is lodged just below the skin (though it may take weeks or months and will be very painful). The long term effects of bullets stuck in your body are pain while moving the muscles around the bullet, discomfort with changing seasons, a lifelong trouble with metal detectors and in some cases, lead poisoning or sepsis (they'll mostly take the bullet out if the last two cases are possible).

When a bullet gets shot out of a firearm the super heated gases propelling it actually sterilizes its surface. As long as you remove all the other pieces (overcoat fibers, spectacle case metal, other clothing bits) in the wound then the bullet can stay in the body.

Teddy's strength came from him actually having asthma when he was a young boy. He trained relentlessly to overcome the Asthma and he actually did. He just kept training afterwards. He didn't kill the cub because that would not have been sporting and he loved wildlife and nature. He killed the animals because it was a manly sport. not because he liked killing. He was a tremendous family man as well and played with his 5 or 6 children all the time as if he were one of them on the North Shore of Long Island where he built his house. Franklin Roosevelt, his much younger cousin and future great ww2 president, would come and spend summers at Teddy's house sometimes as a teenager. I think Eleanor Roosevelt, Franklin cousin and future wife visited too. But Eleanor was strongly rumored to be a lesbian with her female secretary and Franklin had a long time affair with a woman. Even while in a wheelchair. No tv or radio back then so like church a 50 page speech was entertainment. And teddy s speeches he didn't just read them. he had a lot of acting and emotion in them. Teddy was a prolific reader and writer of things. He wrote more and probably read more than any other president. I forgot exactly but the book I read said he read several books a day and most of his income, he was not rich, came from books and articles he read and sold. Just google books by Teddy Roosevelt.
You should do a thing on Franklin Roosevelt. Completely different sort of man and president but arguably our greatest president.

Because of the heat involved, bullets are actually sterile believe it or not. Back in those days they didn’t actually have a good grasp of sterile surgery themselves so they decided he’d be less likely to have an infection and further complications/chance of death because infections were very deadly then. (Pre-mass produced medical antibiotics).
