    • @michaelpalmieri7335
      @michaelpalmieri7335 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Jack was also featured in an animated feature film called "Journey Back To Oz," which, like this half-hour cartoon, was sort of a sequel to the original "Wizard Of Oz" story, in which Dorothy and her dog, Toto, find themselves back in Oz.
In this film, the voice of Dorothy is actually that of Liza Minnelli, who, ironically, is the daughter of the late Judy Garland, who played the role in the 1939 MGM film version of the first "Oz" book.
It's interesting to note that Margaret Hamilton, who, in 1939's "The Wizard Of Oz," played the duo role of Mrs. Gulch (in the Kansas scenes) and the Wicked Witch Of The West (in the Oz segments), was also in "Journey Back To Oz," but in the latter, she was the voice of Dorothy's Auntie Em. In another interesting twist, the voice of the Scarecrow (now the King of the Land Of Oz) is that of Mickey Rooney, who was a close friend of Judy Garland, although they were never in love. (Rooney saw Miss Garland as more of a kid sister than a lover)
The Wicked Witch Of The West doesn't appear in "Journey Back To Oz" (because she was killed off in the first film when Dorothy splashed water on her, causing the witch to melt), but there does appear another witch called Mombi, a relative of the Witch Of The West. (I think she's either the other witch's cousin or sister, but I'm not sure) Her voice was done by Ethel Merman.
The other voice actors included Milton Berle, Jack E. Leonard, Paul Lynde, Rise Stevens, Danny Thomas, and Mel Blanc. (Best known as the voice of Bugs Bunny)
"Journey Back To Oz" was made in 1964, but for some reason, it wasn't released until 1974, a whole decade later!

@@michaelpalmieri7335 There's nothing ironic in Liza being Judy's daughter, nor in her playing (or voicing) Dorothy.
The reason the film took so long was one that has plagued many an endeavor: money! Filmation ran out of it after having recorded all the music and dialogue for the film, and had to build up their resources, which they did via their animated T.V. shows featuring Superman and other members of the Justice League.
Interestingly, Liza (who had by then won an Oscar for her work in the movie _Cabaret_ ) came to them when the film was back underway and said, "Listen, I've been working a lot on my singing, and I'm so much better now than when I was sixteen. I think I should re-record my songs." Lou Scheimer and Norm Prescott (and probably Fred Ladd) disagreed, thinking it was her very youth and innocence that lent her singing such charm and poignancy in the first place. They even played her the recordings, and she agreed that they should leave them as is.

It sounds like he's singing "The Song Of The Volga Boatmen." It's an old folk song from Russia, if I'm not mistaken.
It's not surprising that the pie would sing that song with what sounds like a combination of a Russian and Yiddish accent, since it's a mince pie, which is made up of different ingredients, and because it was accidentally brought to life by the magic powder, it can speak with different accents (Latino, Irish, Italian, and so on), which, by the way, all sound a little stereotypical, which is why I don't think a program like this would be considered, as they say nowadays, "politically correct."

There's a few scenes in this story that don't make sense:
    1) When Dorothy is captured by the Green Gobbler and taken to the castle of Tyrone The Terrible Toy Tinker (an interesting bit of alliteration), she tells Tyrone, "Kansas girls don't scare easy!" That's odd, because she seemed very scared when the Green Gobbler caught her with its talons.
    2) Just as Dorothy nearly succeeds in convincing Tyrone to use his toy-making talents for good instead of evil by singing "Christmas, Toys, And Oz," her friends Tick Tock, Jack Pumpkin-Head, and the Hungry Tiger suddenly appear and try to grab the magic powder from Tyrone, but it falls into the volcano, causing it to come to life and explode. (fortunately, Dorothy and the others are rescued by the Green Gobbler, who flies them to the Emerald City, where they meet Queen Ozma) But, if the magic powder, which brings things like toys to life, is now gone forever, obviously rendering Tyrone unable to use it to make good toys to give to children for Christmas, then what was the point of Dorothy trying to reform Tyrone, or singing about "Christmas, Toys, And Oz"? Also, it is never said what happened to Tyrone after he, Dorothy, and friends arrived in the Emerald City. It's like he just disappeared!
    3) Towards the end of the program, the Wizard, who was the narrator, says "They all lived happily ever after. How do I know? (Cut to a shot of him sticking his head out of the chimney of Dorothy's Kansas house) Because I came along for the ride."
But, how did he know to hide in the chimney in the first place, especially since he couldn't have known ahead of time that Queen Ozma was going to use her magic to make Dorothy's house fly over to the Land Of Oz, bringing her Auntie Em and her Uncle Henry with it?
I noticed that in the closing credits, it says that the voice of the Hungry Tiger was that of Frank Nelson. I've heard of him. He often appeared on Jack Benny's radio and television shows, usually playing a rather obnoxious and sarcastic store clerk or floorwalker. The sketches with Jack Benny and Frank Nelson usually began with the former walking up to the latter, and saying "Oh clerk," or "Oh floorwalker," and the latter replying, in a somewhat effeminate voice, "Yyyyessss?" Nelson, for some reason, also did this routine on a few episodes of "Sanford And Son."
I also noticed that the tiger character wants to eat anything or anybody that he finds, like Dorothy and friends, but he won't do it, because his conscience won't let him, and it makes him feel miserable about it. In a way, he's sort of the equivalent of the Cowardly Lion from the original "Oz" story, who acts like a ferocious lion who's always ready to fight someone, but when that someone fights back, the lion suddenly turns cowardly, and this upsets him as well.
Similarly, Tick Tock, the wind-up man, could be considered another Tin Woodsman, and Jack Pumpkin-Head, who, judging by his accent, is apparently a rural sort of creature, is kind of like the Scarecrow, and in real life, scarecrows are usually associated with farm areas.

1 Not so odd. The green gobbler with its size and talons were considerable threat. However she’s saying those words to an old man who doesn’t appear so considerable.
2 I suppose Tyrone considered his creations in the past and started anew.
3 This is conjecture but maybe the Wizard was going to Henry and Em to apologize saw the house about to fly away and took advantage.
It should be noted most of the new characters are actual Oz characters. Jack Pumpkinhead and the Powder came from the first sequel THE MARVELOUS LAND OF OZ (which had Scarecrow and Tin Woodman but Ozma as the protagonist, in her male form of Tip. Tiktok and the Hungry Tiger came from OZMA OF OZ which brought back Dorothy and the Lion. Tyrone does resemble that book’s villain the Nome King. Em and Henry came to Oz to stay in EMERALD CITY OF OZ.
