The Future of Pakistan and U.S.-Pakistan Relations

  • In an age of accelerating great power competition, Pakistan’s political stability and economic recovery are critical to regional security. As Pakistan’s largest export market and one of the country’s top sources of foreign investment and development aid, the United States is well-positioned to help Pakistan achieve economic stability and prosperity. Over the last three years, U.S. companies have invested more than $1.5 billion in Pakistan’s fastest-growing sectors, including consumer goods, agribusiness, financial services, information & communications technology, healthcare, and energy. In 2023, the United States and Pakistan held the first ministerial meetings since 2016 under the U.S.-Pakistan Trade and Investment Framework (TIFA), the primary vehicle to address obstacles to bilateral trade and strengthen commercial ties.
In recent years Pakistan has faced a combination of challenges including devastating flooding, high inflation, heavy external debt, resurgent terrorism, and border tensions with Afghanistan and Iran. Politics in Pakistan have long been contentious. Challenges to the official results of the February 8 election are still being resolved. But regardless of who leads the next government, the country must continue to seek long-term stability and economic viability through structural reforms aimed at increasing the tax base, targeting subsidies to poor, privatizing inefficient state-owned enterprises, depoliticizing and modernizing the civil service, and assuring the independence of the judiciary. To attract FDI the country has committed to investing in human development, ease of doing business regimes, regulatory reforms, and protection of intellectual property.
Please join the CSIS Project on Prosperity and Development (PPD) on Tuesday, February 20th from 10:00-11:00 AM EST for a discussion on the future of Pakistan between Masood Khan, Pakistani Ambassador to the United States and Dan Runde, CSIS. Former U.S. Ambassador Robin Raphel will be providing opening remarks. This in-person and livestreamed event will explore the state of U.S.-Pakistani relations, examine current challenges in Pakistan’s commercial landscape, and consider opportunities for deeper U.S.-Pakistan collaboration in trade, investment, diplomacy, and security. Registration is required for all in-person attendees.
This event is made possible through general support to CSIS.

Here’s the cold hard Truth, coming completely unaltered and from the heart. Also, from a religious unaffiliated perspective but was indoctrinated into the Judeo-Christian mindset. Muslims and Christians need to stay in their own religious homelands, if they are dyed in the wool. Cause we’ll destroy your faith before we bow down to an ideology. Sharia law doesn’t work on once freed people. And Christians will never trust people sworn to kill them.

To provide context to the event, we need to recall that Robin Raphel was investigated by the FBI on the charge that she passed sensitive files to a Pakistani agency, her house was searched for incriminating material and for some time restrictions placed on her movements. Masood Khan's appointment as Ambassador to US was paused in view of his alleged acts of support to terrorism when he was the President of the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.

Robin Raphel, google her. She weasled out of FBI charges against her for being a pakistani intelligence asset but everyone knows the truth. She held back US-India ties for years and forced the US to be in the awkward position of choosing a genocidal military dictatorship over a democracy.

Wait, wasn't Pakistan intelligence agency knowingly hiding Osama bin Laden for years in a border town next to their military base?
Ambassador Khan just droning on from his PowerPoint slides is truly an embarrassment.
Thank you CSIS for broadcasting this; I listened to it, but I'm extremely skeptical to their flowery words.

Based on the introduction by the lady, surely Pakistan should be thriving emerging economy but still lingering just above poverty. Why? Basically, the nation is being divided by the leadership of the armed forces and the few families which obviously decided to maintain the status quo permitting them to rig the riches of the nation and then retire to the West. Up-to-date, only Imran Khan seems to have the desire to change the scenario as expected the Army and "old" families partners decided otherwise. One thing for sure for the people from the Sub-continent, words are plentiful and are used to usurp their will over a population blindly swayed by religious differences even within the same religion! I bet this scenario will be repeated for the next 50 years!

Fantastic attendance and great summary... but where is Kashmir, why is Khan not talking about it. US and Pak govts are in bed but people to people are not while it is the opposite with US and India. Mr. Khan took only one question where he burst out his IQ by not getting the question (people perception) right and exposing the Pak govt as nakedly siding with islamists...

I listened to the ambassador's speech but I must admit it was very very difficult to focus because he said nothing that was serious or truthful - " ...we seek investments...restructure loans..." Yawn! And yes, that's sad but US or anybody other than Pakistanis, can help Pakistan and you know that's not going to happen any time soon, especially as what was once a "brain drain" has become a flood, with anyone who can, leaving by any means possible.
Some in Pakistan think US and EU will keep them going because Pakistan can offer a blood sacrifice to fight Western wars, but increasingly US seeks to not getting tied up with Pakistan, regardless of China's relationship with Pakistan may be.

After Afghan exit by US, *Pakistan has been abandoned after serving the US loyally like a dog!* Unfortunately it has been kicked out on the street by its original owner US as it got close to China for a few crumbs.
*China* is not ready to adopt it like US did. It *treats Pakistan like a stray dog* and gives it some crumbs when it visits it's doorstep.
Now Pakistan - out on the streets getting licked by India - longs to go back to it's original owner for protection and better treatment..
*The strategic die is cast for Pakistan....*
It is allied with China (against US) while US is allied with India (against China).
On its own Pakistan is a bit player in terms of its economy, technology and everything else that matters globally.
*There is no future for US-Pak cooperation in the medium-to-long term!*

America and Pakistan are very close brothers. Pakistan has some economic problems that can be helped by migration of 30 to 50 million to America. This will be good for both.
