I've got a 1977 RD Artist bass and with a set of rounds and a pick the thing is an absolute monster. (Both in terms or tone and weight!) One thing I'll mention is that the onboard EQ doesn't really sound "flat" compared to other basses until both controls are set to around +3, which I suspect is why some other commenters are saying it sounds too "woody" here. If you wanna hear how downright evil these basses can sound just have a listen to Nirvana live at the Paramount 1991!
I really dig the big route, it safe a bit of weight and make it more resonant cuz full maple can be heavy as it is, one of my all time favorites, cool demo but I would prefer roundwounds
Great review! I tried one when they were first released. Just like the LP guitars i owned, heavy and unimpressive. (No LP guitar stayed more than 3 months in the arsenal.) Although i had a G-3 bass from that era that I should never have sold. That was a 12 lb diamond in the rough.
All that technology... and it ends up sounding woody like every other Gibson bass. I remember when these came out. People were excited... saw the price tag... heard what they sounded like... and left unimpressed.
This one sound pretty lame and muddy because of the flats, with rounds this basses are jazz bass killers, growl and clarity with strong attack and beastly gain not at all traditional warm Gibson sound
I'll stick to my modern Ibanez. Gibson have never quite been able to make a decent bass, also, basses tend to not age particularly well. Nice review though.
I didn't even know about this bass, nice!
Thanks for the video.

Originally intended as a John Entwistle signature bass.
