I have been talking about this man's guitar playing skills with people who search for excellence in the playing of classical music on the guitar. This is splendid. Much more can and should be said about this man's contribution to my musical education. If you are looking for alternative words for describing this amazing performance from the thesaurus then take time to begin your search for there are many alternative words to satisfy this need for a wider vocabulary. Things do not get any better than this. This man will perform near my home town in April 2019 and I plan to be there. I did not know until recently that this man will replace Serge Assad in the duo of the two brothers that have become well respected in recent years. I like to hear guitar duos and trios or quartets as much as the nest person but solo guitar performances of this quality belong in a different category of excellence. Precision for sure is a mark of an excellent performance that deserves much praise, but this superior artist brings so much more. Memory of the composition always gets my admiration and respect. Technical grace and dexterity for sure brings words of praise. Moments of magical musical knowledge of the composition dominate these performances in large amounts.

It doesn't get any better than this. Past yard line markers for estimating and judging excellence in this type of performance do not change or reduce the range of qualities, they merely extend and widen the terrain for making such determining estimates as crucial judgements and for playing such a definitive part in coming to grips with such data. Different generations will produce competitors for seeking highest ranking among classical guitarists. Yet it is not fair to take comparisons too far in as many directions as the information will lead us. These ranks of excellence are contaminated with various methods of evaluation with relevance to what is left on the sidelines to be evaluated incoming years. It is ok to say that different listeners have their favorites yet these subjective rankings are more than subjective. Never changing qualities are still the target of such evaluations. It is not that goalposts for excellence are repositioned - it is just the playing field has more participants. It is not a generational difference that guides our thinking. No shame in not being able to declare your choice as being universally accepted in that high position. The slots are getting crowded. In my opinion there are several candidates who might occupy the position of best classical guitarist from one year to the next. No shame in allowing all of them occupy the position for various reasons since much depends on the repertoire that brought them to our attention. I have heard many guitarists whose playing will qualify them to occupy that highest ranking and who excel for playing certain compositions. Careful comparisons of this type make the judgment much more than apples and oranges. It is more than six of one and a half a dozen of another set of qualities. I hope this essay will help readers think about these matters. I am willing to place several artists in that highest classification but for different reasons without taking any thing away from one or more of them. Too complicated!
