    Wow! It's so cool I found your channel! I'm Dutch (grandfather came to USA from Netherlands) and I live in Texas. I really enjoyed and laughed at some of your observations! I can relate!
    "So, you're from Texas? Where's your horse? Do you have cowhorns on the front of your Cadillac convertible?" "You own oil wells?"

    My grandfather immigrated to Canada from the Netherlands in the late 1960s, and he had dozens of clogs at home. He liked making little wooden boats as a hobby, and for an old man, he was pretty cool. He liked playing video games, collecting vintage car models, and listening to up to date music, but he was hell of a heavy drinker.

    • @TheDutchcountryside

      He definitely sounds like a cool man! I hope your family has hold on to his clogs, selfmade wooden boats and such - they are beautiful memories to look back at. The heavy drinking is definitely still very much found on this side of the pond haha, we learn it young😅

      I'm originally from Cedar Grove, Wisconsin. Every July they celebrate "Hollandfest." There are several "Dutch" towns in Wisconsin: Oostburg, and Little Chute citizens are also predominantly of Dutch heritage. Pella, Iowa is also a Dutch community.

      @@sallykauth2115 You probably know this already, but the people of Dutch heritage in the Fox Cities (Little Chute, etc.) are quite different from the Cedar Grove/Oostburg Dutch. In the Fox Cities, they're Catholic and pretty wild. Lol. I grew up with them. Everything revolved around drinking and partying. Then we moved to Sheboygan County and was surprised to learn of the dry Sundays and strict religious beliefs.

    I think you have spoken to many english speaking people who are hmmm…. A little slow.
    I am of DUTCH heritage and in the area that I grew up in, we were the majority, and we often found humor in our “Hollander” attributes. We embraced them and were not afraid of being different than other cultures. Also, you are right about the misconception of Dutch and Deutsch, they still call an area in the USA, Dutch Pennsylvania even though the original settlers were DEUTSCH.
    In my high school they did not have Dutch language offered so I took German just because it was the closest thing that we had, but I love learning about my people, my language and my genetics. Thank you for your videos.

    As an American who has both the experience of being new to the cuIture and having Iived here for more than 30 years, I must say that I was deIighted to hear the Dutch perspective. I must correct something though. The 'rudeness' I experienced was when I was in a shop waiting my turn and quite often someone wouId push their way through ahead of everybody eIse who was there first, however, I personaIIy do Iike directness. I aIso know that Americans are far more animated than the Dutch (which I have wiIIingIy adapted to). AIso, we Americans are given minimaI education about other countries, Iet aIone their cuIture. I thought that 'HoIIand' was part of Scandanavia for exampIe. There's a t.v. show caIIed Ik Houd Van HoIIand .. so it can be a bit confusing for a foreigner (untiI we study Dutch history). The Deutsch and Dutch sound the same to the untrained ear. There are peopIe in PennsyIvania caIIed the PennsyIvania Dutch, so that's where that confusion comes from. Hope this expIains a IittIe from a foreigner's perspective. 🌹

    My mother immigrated to the USA with her parents And brothers from Friesland province when she was 12 years old. Ever since my grandparents passed away with family doesn't get together much at all. My Dutch side of the family just doesn't seem that interested in gathering with the family other than their immediate kids and grandkids. Is that just my family or is that common in the Netherlands?

    • @TheDutchcountryside
      @TheDutchcountryside  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That really depends on the family; but in general it’s not like we meet with the entire family every week. We usually see each other on birthdays, special parties and many families also have a family weekend or family day every year (including my family). But we do tend to value time with our immediate family more than with the rest of the family yes and most people also have a better connection with one side of the family, so they tend to spend more time there. If you want to see them more often I’d definitely recommend you to simply say that you want to see them more often, why you want that and how often. I hope this helps a little! 😄
