This is the track that took me from buying records to buying music equipment I saw this band using a SH101 on a late night tv show and went out and bought one the next day from my local music shop in 1989 .....never looked back the seed was planted and eventually hooked up with someone who had a korg M1 ,dr rhythm drum machine and pro 24 on the Atari .The rest is history so they say .......

The TV show you mention may be 'Snub TV' which I watched on BBC 2. I still have the episode on VHS. 808 State (including Gerald Simpson (A Guy Called Gerald) and MC Tunes on vocal duty) played 'Dance Yourself To Death' where the SH-101 featured heavily...it sounded awesome! 🤩 I also have an SH-101 which I purchased around the same time. 🎹 I know this track as 'Pacific State' and own it as part of the 'Quadrastate' E.P. which I have on vinyl. 🎷

Pacific State/202/707/etc... is one of those songs that still surprises me that it came out in '89. Over the years I've always thought if it were released in the 90s, or 00's, and on it would still be a hit through each decade. Loved it as a Teen in the 90's, a young adult in the 00's and today as a full on adult, it still gives me goose bumps. One of those songs that has so many layers and you pay attention to each and every one of them when listening, and they all hit you on some level. One of those tracks that you can get lost in very easily. Great great job on the deconstruction!

You ponder at the end, whether 808 State were using an Atari ST. I would certainly say they were; it appears centre-stage with them, on that clip from Top of the Pops included at near the start of this presentation.

What fewer people know about this track, is it was heavily influenced by Exotica, a 50s subgenre of Lounge music that focused on imitating oriental themes. Its original listening audience were Pacific War veterans, hence we have "pacific" mentioned in the title.

Still a top track today after all these years, i will be recreating that track myself thanks for sharing I always wandering what chords they were using on this track and now I know they are sevenths I'm going to dust off my VST'S and have a go myself.as you say the swing on the Drum track really lifts this track, and yes the D-50 one bar descending notes quantised has got to be one of the best fills in tracks used from this Genre, i still remember it very well to this day after I bought this album believe it or not on tape, remember that Wow just on this basis of this track!
