I remember playing that in my basement with miniatures and dice straight on the concrete floor using chalk

We had a ping pong table in the basement that we used. Miniatures and all sorts of homemade terrain as well!

@DDHomebrew honestly I almost forgot about the ping pong table.
Lol we had one too! It had a 8×4 piece of plywood on it that was used for miniature trains.
Of course, we used it for miniatures.
Chain mail was the name of the Gygax miniature system, wasn't it?

@@Sam-I-am-working-man Chainmail was for OD&D, though I never used it back in the day.

@@DDHomebrew it was awesome. I remember being so excited at like age 10. I'm 55 now. Seems like only yesterday, as they say.

@Sam-I-am-working-man I'm right there with you. Those were the days. But we can keep playing RPGs at any age, which is what makes them so great.

Loved the DnD basic and expert sets. And loved ADnD 1e. I still DM on the World of Greyhawk. I miss the old days, when you died very quickly and needed battle tactics or running away, and when we were super excited with every new monster we encountered.

There is such a nostalgia rush in looking through the old books and reliving that feeling I had as a kid playing D&D. Every page of the box set, supplements and especially the 1st edition monster manual is familiar. Like an old friend.

Excellent video. Agreed, Greyhawk was a game-changer. (pun intended) Only one correction, or thing to note: if you were playing with Chainmail combat rules instead of the Alternative Combat Chart, attack rolls were based on the weapon versus armor type. The Alternative made combat based on AC instead of weapon. I believe the weapon vs armor type table was an attempt to bring that back as by this point the Alternative Combat Chart became the main combat chart instead. Great video, thanks for this.

I'm not familiar with the Chainmail rules; when I started we were homebrewing all sorts of stuff not in the white box set. Thanks for the information!

Amazing isn't it? I never thought I'd look at those books again, much less use them, as I went on to other systems of D&D and RPG's, but I would never think about throwing them away! Just such a reminder of my youth.

Agreed, and the base root of AD&D (my fav version). It also represented the shift from table top wargame supplement, to a game type unto itself (the RPG)

I think I misspoke on the Greyhawk book itself. There's all sorts of Greyhawk setting related materials but not the book. So the other way is to go to a site like pdfcoffee and download a PDF, but anything there is a pirated copy.

Im not a greyhawk person. I have played DDO greyhawk, my first and only experience if it. However, i am a big strategy and tactics type player and id really like to see more integration of tactical and strategic game back into the 'story' / 'rpg' style gameplay. But i prefer Faerun as is over the Greyhawk style grey like feeling of it.
I think that Assault of Krynn is a good edging toward that. Where the players maintained player actions and events and activity but the overall arching battle has so much more importance.
On top of that, i like the Final Fantasy levels of magic, ie Fire 1, Fire 2, Fire 3 and Flare etc.. I wish DnD actually leveled your spells rather than the random abilities with no development of the players knowledge. Although the levels do add damage it would be cool to go from a little flame, to small fireball to large fireball. In any case, DnD as is isnt that bad. Id just like more specific development.

I see your point here. There were constraints and design choices in those early versions that were head scratchers to us as well.

@@DDHomebrew the only reason I didn’t down vote was because I love you 😂
If players would accept that rules in supplements are optional at the discretion of the DM it would all be good. Which to be fair wasn’t as big an issue in the ‘70s, no one demanded the DM use the hit locations in Blackmoor for example.

    • @DDHomebrew
      @DDHomebrew  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@jasonconnerley And some argued that all of rules are optional!
