      Oh, also? It's more than a little ironic that this video is, _absolutely,_ a COMMERCIAL. For a PRODUCT. 20th Century Fox,™ man.

    This documentary goes far beyond the making of "The Revenant." Iñárritu has brought the critical issues of environmental (planetary, even) degradation and of capitalism's amoral exploitation of Nature and Native Peoples into public awareness. He has done this with enormous sensitivity, cinematic beauty and with a desire to reconnect us to our deepest human values, now threatened by institutionalized ignorance of things that really matter. This short film ends with these words: "Climate action is the greatest moral imperative of our generation."

      +Noe Berengena 100% true

    • @cavalrycome
      @cavalrycome 8 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      +Noe Berengena Both _The Revenant_ and this making-of are certainly very well made, but spare a thought for what they actually represent. Iñárritu makes the hero of his film a friend of native Americans, but the real Hugh Glass wasn't married to an Indian woman and didn't have a son. Instead, the real Hugh Glass participated in the fur trade like the rest of them with all the violence and environmental destruction that entailed. In short, the film washes him clean of any connection to capitalism's amoral exploitation of nature and native peoples. Despite this, the making-of goes on to package the whole thing as highlighting this very issue. And with that piece of mental gymnastics and some healthy box office figures, capitalism has once again absorbed its own critique.

    • @rr7firefly
      @rr7firefly 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      +cavalrycome -- Thank you for taking the time to write that, and doing it without a personal attack. It's disheartening to learn those hard facts about Glass. We know Leonardo is an environmental advocate, so his conflation with Glass muddies the waters. For us with the best intentions to live responsibly it is increasingly difficult to remain free of some connection to the big problems.

    • @tonaquehay790
      @tonaquehay790 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      agree! de acuerdo!

    • @cavalrycome
      @cavalrycome 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** It's clear why they changed the details of his life. The film makers wanted people to see their film, and the reality of his life happens to be unpalatable to modern audiences. A large section of the audience wouldn't side with a hero who viewed native Americans in the way that frontiersmen generally did at the time. They wouldn't side with a hero who stood by and watched a woman being raped either, and despite his occupation as a fur trapper, they wouldn't want to actually see him kill an animal for sport or to make a hat, even if they'd accept it in self defense or for food. In short, they want to see an anachronistic hero who inexplicably possesses modern moral standards.
      If it was just about entertainment, none of this would matter, but not everyone who watches the film will know where it did and didn't depart from the truth, and so there will be viewers who leave the cinema admiring the real Glass, the man who wasn't a friend of native Americans or nature, and who didn't trek through any snow or mountainous terrain. It's not quite as bad as admiring Christopher Columbus, but it's in that direction.

    I had to watch this movie several times in the theater. The first two times I couldn't follow the story line because I couldn't get over watching each scene and the way it was captured knowing 99% of it was shot using natural light. Every scene had me scanning the screen from side to side to take in every single inch of light and how it was falling on the subjects and the scene itself. Just amazing.

      36:04 first off it starts with this scene and doesn't say it's Calgary but kind of implys since that's what he starts talking about. I can tell you that is not the skyline of Calgary. Not even close. Then he starts talking about how the native Calgarians have never seen weather like this before. I can tell you as a born and raised Calgarian that this is a completely false statment. Even my father was born here and his father moved here when he was 3 years old. We have always had this winter phemonen called a Chinook that happens sometimes up to 10 times a winter. You are being feed intentional misinformation for political purpose. It's really kind of gross they would do this. Clean air water and healthy ecosystems are extreamly important to the well-being of the planet. But don't blaitently lie to the public. Makes me wonder what the agenda is or what they have to gain from it.

      Der JaSager It's the small things really like the clothing differences between the RE tribes and the tribes trading with the Americans, also the many gun types you don't see on your first viewing, there's many more subtle things spotted throughout that if you're interested in that type of thing can be educational

    As someone who once lived for a short while with First Nations people in Canada I can only commend this documentary and the spirit it captures. It certainly does not cover everything and is made on the back of the profitable Holywood movie 'The Revenant', but I am so glad it has been made and packaged with the movie for retail so that more people may engage with at least some of the issues surrounding the collective experiences of an incredible First People. One to watch!

    What a reality check this documentary has made. Myself, 1/2 NA, I can now see how appreciative the NA way of fighting for what they have left to fight for. This is a reality check and should be seen by all who do appreciate Mother Earth and respect her. This is only one Earth we live on and to try to salvage what is left of our lands. Amen and God Bless. TY for producing this.

    This film was stunning on the big screen. The blend of hand-held camera work and intimate angles contrasted with vast landscapes was truly captivating. Film, as an art, is so centered in craftsmanship that it evokes a unique brand of wonder. We are simultaneously locked in the story while, like reacting to a magician, confused as to how it is possible.

    The geography is breathtaking. I do appreciate the fact that the person who invested their time, money and effort trying to document a worthy message. The struggle, the loss, the bonds .....I have said before the only thing that would have made this any better was having a native do the narrative though I am grateful that someone like Alejandro cared enough to revisit history. I see the struggle and say "Their wound was my wound". It's a proud time to offer your own contribution thru hard work and merit to give credit back to those who had it stolen from them. I met a young boy once on a bus that was native and he was angry that so much had been taken from his people and I told him to be the one to give the credit and recognition back to His people thru his own effort and merit thru his life. That he could be the difference he felt was not available. You have to acknowledge the contributions the natives contribute thru genetic predisposition alone. Those skills can not be taught, these are inherited traits in a blood line. I think this is the wound that was inflicted thru cultural differences and the denial that became their barrier. It's not enough to give back something after you caused the suffering of people thru ignorance and indifference.

    I will never forget my first hunting experience in northern BC, camped 30 K from the nearest paved road with two friends. Fresh signs of grizzly and timber wolf were everywhere. I would go alone, walking 5-10 K from camp. It was the most incredible experience being alone out there. I was totally responsible and accountable for whatever I did or didn’t do in a way you will never know in civilized circumstance. That I was part of the food chain hit me like an avalanche. I felt totally at risk and totally alive at the same time.
