This is a great video. I watch it often to remind myself how to do a hand tied. Simply because I don't do it often enough. I just have to practice often. Thank you for all of your great videos!
I think a good point to make is also to beginners- the more you add the more you will see the spiral happening. At college I was taught to put one stem over to the back and to twist it towards my body, add a stem and twist to create a spiral. I find keeping your hand steady sliding the stem into you hand on an angle works so much better. The more you fixate on trying to get that spiral the more you will hold it too tightly and mess it up. Relax and have fun with it. Also as John says foliage is key... it gives the arrangement a wonderfully fuller natural look.
My boss gave me this advice and it works so much better! It's faster too, and speed is essential. We all love to lilly dally about making something stunning but reality is, it'll be fast paced.
Great job explaining through everything! I've been a floral assistant & florist the last 10 yrs, in different shops, no formal training...& I've always added my greens to the outside of hand ties, never layered like that! 🤯 this makes all the difference. Perfect presentation, thank you
You are so talented with flowers and I enjoy your making any style. But I think the greatest asset is your kind personality and gentle manners. After all you are a pro and it shows. Thanks
Thank you so much. You are a really really good teacher. So beautiful also the second way to do a more sophisticated bouquet, I love it! Can't wait to discover all of your videos! You are very talented!
Really happy that you're going through the effects and bouquets. Been making sophisticated bouquets that look as if there are no greens but there is a layer. The other day I got a request for using no greens at all yet it had to be sophisticated. Snaps, ranunculus, orchids, peony, jewel tones.
Yes, the foliage gives a framework - even if it is just in the core. With no foliage then some curly willow or twigs help create a frame. Your bouquet sounds lovely - beautiful jewel tones
Beauty - this is the one I've been waiting for!!! Thanks John - wow! That was a masterclass - I've got to make loads of these every week for the farmers markets during the flower season. Very grateful to you.
Thank you John! Great teaching and you've used those Chrysanthemum sprays which I find so hard to use! Guess I'll have to have a 'play' again. You really do encourage us. Thank you.
My God! Loved this video specially the way to remake it again. I don't know if you have another one like that but I want to watch several ways of rebuilding a bouquet with same material!! Thank you!

So glad I found your channel John! I am growing my wedding flowers on my allotment this year and need some advice on arranging! Your videos will be very helpful thank you 😊
Leoni Davidson what a great idea! Hopefully you will find some inspiration in our videos. The main thing I would suggest is flowers in water - tied, bunched are all good. That way you can make them in advance and not stress on the day.
John, I am an amateur florist from the US. I LOVE your teaching! I have learned SO MUCH from you! Can you please consider doing a video on how to make 2 identical [pedestal or altar] arrangements for a wedding - or a funeral?
Arthur Buckley just seen your message - thank you for the lovely feedback. I shall add your suggestion to our possible list - always good getting ideas from viewers 😀
Have you considered creating Amazon Links to the items you use in your videos? This way we can access the supplies you use in your videos, and you can make a little money too. For novices like me, it would be easier to see precisely what you use so that I know that I'm buying the correct product. Also, a recipe for each of your designs in the description box (in terms of the flowers you use) would be ideal. Thank you.
Hello, thank you for all your in-depth tips and process! Your videos have really helped me try new skills in my floral journey. I was wondering what a good alternative to leather leaf would be? I like the color and front, but usually the back is not very pretty because of the spores.
Serenity_delaT hello! Thank you for watching and for your message! Yes, leatherleaf can vary in quality as well, so if small and poor it doesn’t look so good. Now the range of foliage’s is really good, and I like to use some strong leaves deep in the design. Such as fatsia and then aspidistra, but I like pistache as an alternative to leatherleaf as it has a great texture and has volume. I find the problem with leatherleaf and salad is that it become too easy only use them, and the look becomes boring. There is so many types of foliage that are very exciting - foxtail fern, eucalyptus, coccuylus . We used to have phases of not buying our usual greenery so we had to use something different! 🙋🏼♂️😀
I work as a floral associate at a grocery store and often times us expected to wrap fast on the spot. Your vids have been super helpful and I watched your "How To Gift Wrap a Hand Tied Bouquet" and it's cool but takes a bit too much time. I like the spiral hand tie look and practicality but I'm not sure what to do when it comes to cutting the stems since I don't want to expose fresh cut stems to the air for a while but at the same time, wrapping it without cutting the stems looks ugly. Any suggestions?
ananananamouse the best suggestions is just to tidy up any wayward stems and then cone wrap the bouquet. As long as the stems are re-cut by the customer then it’s not a problem for them to be left long. The spiral is good, and for cutting this style you can just bring the stems together and then cut straight across. It’s a good idea have a bucket of water to just pop bunches or bouquets into if you get pulled in another direction. I wouldn’t cut the handtied to final length unless it is being aqua packed. But you can cone wrap and fold over with a handtied as well, without water packing. Hope that helps 😀🌼
"What is this road that separates us across which I hold out the hand of my thoughts a flower is written out at the very tip of each finger and at the very end of the road is a flower that walks along with you" {-Tristan Tzara}
The foliage is fresh - and you can buy in a florists, or wholesalers if you have access. But you can use garden foliage as well - you can even try out some different types to see how they last. Things like ivy, privet, eucalyptus, grasses, hosta - can all come from the garden 😀🌼

woollen hat that’s a good point - with more stems it is more likely to stand when cut also. Thanks for watching and adding your tips!
