NYFF Live: Noah Baumbach | The Meyerowitz Stories: New and Selected | NYFF55

While presenting the North American premiere of The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) at the 55th New York Film Festival, writer-director Noah Baumbach participated in an extensive NYFF Live discussion on the making of the film. In a discussion moderated by IndieWire’s Eric Kohn, he discussed the impetus for the film and bringing together his impressive ensemble. “Hollywood is a place where they make you want something you didn't previously want and then tell you that you can't have it,” says Baumbach. He also discussed how he tries to push into new territory with each film and what he finds compelling about capturing New York City in his films.
Noah Baumbach revisits the terrain of family vanities and warring attachments that he began exploring with The Squid and the Whale in this intricately plotted story of three middle-aged siblings (Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, and Elizabeth Marvel) coping with their strong-willed father (Dustin Hoffman) and the flightiness of his wife (Emma Thompson). Baumbach’s film never stops deftly changing gears, from surges of pathos to painful comedy and back again. Needless to say, this lyrical quicksilver comedy is very much a New York experience. A Netflix release.

Noah, I like what you did. The pace, the Neverending tension and pain in the form of Chinese torture drop after drop after drop. The seeking recognition but never finding it, the way the attention and power flip, and emotions are manipulated, the alcoholism, the finding joy in the smallest things, the flat affect of the older 2 children, the children, the kleidoscope of dysfunction....Great actors great acting great production. Kudos
