My dad used to travel the nation working in refineries and I would go stay with him where ever he was during the summer. A couple of summers he worked in Patoka which is kind of near Vandalia. Since there was nowhere to stay in Patoka he always stayed at Jay's Inn which is right next door to the hotel in video that has the arch replica . The hotel with Arch was a Travelodge back then and would allow people from Jay's Inn to also swim in their pool. I hear that Jays Inn is still there ( last I heard) but from what I saw online it looks like a roach motel now. Back then the owner had a really old classic car from the 30's he would park in front of the hotel . The old lady that worked in the lobby became friends with us and even had me and my mother over to her house for dinner a few times and drove us around to see the area. She was so kind and loved my Eastern Ky accent lol. She had to ask my mom what I meant when I asked if she had "pop". She said "you mean soda?" The Travelodge was really nice back then too but looks run down now. All the places I used to go , Vandalia wasn't the most fun for a child lol, nor the prettiest , but it had a charm to it that I never forgot.
I visited vandalia with one of my friend mike honestly i kept telling myself to be ready for some racist comments but it was a whole different picture when we got there very nice town and very very friendly people i still talk to some of them Thumbs up for Vandalia

They should tell the history of the historical fires the burn down a historic building about every 15 -20 years under suspicious circumstances.
