Maugham writing in the first-person, putting himself in the shoes of a man looking for a wife, is amusing because he wasn't even in the closet. He was openly gay and that's why he never married - and partly why he lived so much of his life abroad.
@@dontaylor7315 you are partially right, Maugham was a homosexual. But he got married to Syrie Wellcome in 1917 and they had a daughter, Lisa. Their marriage lasted for 12 years and during most of these years the couple lived apart and Maugham had a male companion.
Tealky loved this story! Thank you again for such a lovely tale of a successful marriage. It could easily be close to reality. The beautiful description of the folk sitting on the deck on a starlit night with the Italian belting out his songs was perfect! I didn't even have to close my eyes to imagine the stars/ the waves below the ship/almost listening to the singing being sat on deck with that lot! Maugham forgot to mention the flying fish, the shiny diatoms that shine like stars on water to match the sky
I love him for presenting this for everyone's year's of lifestyle and stylish way of making life's dramatic decisions and yet ridiculous people who have been on the same page.
I loved this story, but it does belong to another age, when marriage was for many reasons more necessary for both partners. And I totally agree with the comment that the practical attitude shown is straight out of "Pride and Prejudice" (although nothing on earth would persuade most women to marry Mr. Collins from that book). I think it's one of Maugham's "observations of other people's relationships" stories, given that he always wrote as an outsider, for many reasons.
Perfect for our times. What is a woman? A song filters through my head…Dean Martin singing “ You’re nobody til somebody loves you.” Maugham’s way with words had me smiling and laughing out loud.
I am French so understood all the bits in my language. Very amusing and an interesting theory. However I wonder : the author seems obsessed by the weight of his characters.
I don’t believe he means overweight in the flesh, or do you? Did he mean Mr Maugham writes heavy on the characters and the plot is usually subtly between the heavy characters.
@@sandraleightner8950Of course. But you have a duty to yourself too. And people perform better when they have a degree of contentment. Best wishes to you.
...unic story of my mom....blaa..blaaaaa..reality.........but I remember her idea to pray to husband .....like he is God.....she died happy in 90....pray ing to her son in low
His marriage to Syrie was unhappy because he was living a lie . Had he lived in our modern times, he'd have been happily married to his partner Gerald.
If you’re going to present these stories “read” by a AI robot, you need to teach the robot how to pronounce French words and that an orangutan is not an “O Rang Yutan.” And eliminate the weird little “neh!” explosions of sound scattered throughout all these stories. It’s great to offer Maugham’s stories - and we love and appreciate them - but he deserves more careful preparation.
I understand your frustrations, but in defence of the AI reading this suggest that there are challenges involved with portraying someone speaking bad French , and also that the pronunciation of ‘orang- utan’ ( in Malay, Man of the forest’ may actually be closer to the more usual English transliteration. We can also be grateful that such wonderful literature is produced for our enjoyment.
These audio recordings, are a tonic for troubled times. THANK YOU!
Maugham was so wise. Friendship, laughter, patience, no unrealistic expectations, those are the solids foundations of a good marriage.
He was a wonderful author anyway.

@@Nagolobo2023 Hey thanks, that's bio info I didn't know anything about.
@dontaylor7315 Actually, he was bi, he was married for 3 years to Syrie Welcome and he had a daughter.
I'm on a solo holiday in Greece.Enjoyed listening to this after my morning coffee and watching the sunrise over the Parga harbor.
Enjoy it!
Sounds wonderful. Enjoy.
Maugham has been my favorite writer for the last 50 years. His skill is masterful, his eye is sharp, his humor unrivaled.
I love the line “..he could have been a manager of a third rate hotel in a second rate town in California”
Omg the wit about make him jump through a hoop and the following description 😆
I have many of his novels in my library. I love his writing! Thank you so much for this upload.

Discovery of your channel made my day!
It’s a pleasure to drift away into these stories and sit among these characters. ❤

I wrote "Really loved the story". Apologies for AI altering the word altogether
Check out the story the Treasure !!
Wisdom straight out of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice "Happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance".
Or choice.
Wonderful photography - .looks like a Buenos Aires bar scene..
Looks like the McSorley's Saloon and Bar I believe on East 6th or 7th Streets between Lexington and Second Avenues in Manhattan, NYC.
Delightful. His descriptions are without equal. For the time and place.
So happy to find this..... ❤ Thankyou..
What an absolutely beautiful love story!❤

People still marry for money, position, lifestyle not necessarily love.
Thanks so much for sharing💙💙💙
Thanks I appreciate you taking the time to answer with this information. I can imagine a short, not long story about the situation

Thank You !!! these help so much !!
Bravo 👏 👏 👏
Perfecto.
Looks like PJ Clarke's in Manhattan. The original one.
I love the evocative images you've chosen for these wonderful stories. How did you find them?
I am French so understood all the bits in my language. Very amusing and an interesting theory.
However I wonder : the author seems obsessed by the weight of his characters.
I noticed the same.
I noticed that many of them are fat
...and every story revolves around alcohol
I don’t believe he means overweight in the flesh, or do you?
Did he mean Mr Maugham writes heavy on the characters and the plot is usually subtly between the heavy characters.
It's relevant in a love story for the woman to be attractive = normal weight.
Perhaps? But be happy with it! Never sacrifice happiness, no matter what, even if it means being alone!
I believe there are things of greater value than my own personal happiness

Well, what of Maugham’s own marriage?
He was homosexual and had a faithful companion
Faithfulness is a virtue, no matter where it appears.
His marriage to Syrie was unhappy because he was living a lie . Had he lived in our modern times, he'd have been happily married to his partner Gerald.

Is this commentary by AI?
Yes it is.
Many mispronunciations. I had to stop listening after 5 minutes 😢
Ahhh that's why I found it so annoying
Funny how other races were viewed back then.
A masculine intelligence? Hmm.
Why is this in my feed?🙄🙄🙄🙄
