      I was initially concerned whether or not it would sound correctly since, assuming that turntable has a magnetic cartridge rather than ceramic, I didn't know if he would connect it to the proprietary phono input, assuming that amp has one.

    That is an ION turntable. It's not an old machine. Your dad would have bought it to play records. Which means SOMEWHERE in your house there must be records. How would you have never seen or heard a record before?!? Mind boggling.

    Hi Camshaft Thank you for the honest video, and I love the genuine surprise and wonder of your 1st time experience. You have entered the absolute analogue and manual World of vinyl, so enjoy !! With the fear of starting a ranttsunami, I personally believe that a record player is an musical instrument, as it (re)generates the recorded electricity with a pickup and the component quality determines the audio result, as opposed to a digital copy that's just delivers the data without any true intervention (apart from AD/DA, oversampling etc ;). Vinyl will always be a personal experience based on acoustics, mood, wearing of media and determination for the challenge of manual work.

  • @RisinT96

    you probably shouldn't touch it with your fingers, that leaves some oil and can damage the needle and vinyl itself too.
    hold it by the sides.

    • @reyzuna
      @reyzuna 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      sorry if this reply is late than 1year old but Vinyl is a plastic or PVC, you can touch it what ever you want as long you don't press hard, dirt and oil are everywhere so just clean your hand with nice clean cloth and you can pinch it just don't pinch it too hard. I've seen a lot of people wiping their dirty vinyls with cloths that are rougher than your skin so i don't see touching it with your hand will damage it

    • @reyzuna

    Also FYI to to the future, linear record players CAN select a track, since the needle and IR sensor run in a straight line across the disc

  • @jeehaisse
    @jeehaisse 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Really reminded me a few years back, this is an item and a process of another time and getting into it now doesn't come with proper instructions. But it is so great afterwards you just can't go back to your digital music files.. There is no fastforward, but you can select the song you want putting the needle down on the thick lines on the records which represents the track separation

  • @marklechman2225
    @marklechman2225 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Don't listen to the hipsters as they have no idea what they're talking about. It's completely fine to touch the grooves of a vinyl record. In fact, many people have found that the natural oils (which includes any organic vegetable or animal fats/oils) from your hands actually help lubricate the record and you'll find that the stylus pops a bit less. Also, and most folks who claim to be "experts" don't even know this, you'll want to gently wipe the dust off of those horizontal phalanges on the underside of the unit once in a while (only if it's an open-case model, if it's a Farrington-style player you won't have to worry about this) in order to help keep static electricity from building up -- not every day but probably after every 10 or 15 plays. Also, yes, you can spend lots of money on high-end (and over-priced) cleaners and brushes to keep your records dust-free, but honestly human saliva (a.k.a spit) and a clean white t-shirt work just as well. Happy spinning!

    Why is everyone mad at this guy? Its not outlandish that the average young person these days doesn't know how to operate a record player. It doesn't matter if youre '6' years old and know how to operate one. This was his first time playing a record and is perfectly fine to not know what to do. Atleast he figured it out so he really isn't an idiot..

Same w/ 8 tracks, just turn the knob to tape and push in the cartridge

    A+, well done. Records will sound better than digital. One tip, do not place the disc on the floor or touch the grooves. When you handle this disc touch the outer rim and the label only. Finger prints will add noise to the recording and collect dust that will also make noise.

      It is possible, if there is a small hard object like a grain of sand, you might hear a ziiiiiip sound as that rolls in the groove for a fraction of a second. That will dent the grove walls and that ziiiiip will be there next time.

    To go to a different song on a record this is what you do:
    If you look at a record you should notice the grooves, the grooves contain the information (audio) stored in it. In between tracks there are no grooves, as in there is a space between the grooves that make up the individual tracks. Depending on how many songs are on a side, you should see several larger "lines", as you called them. If you put the needle down at a specific one, it will play right at that track.
    As for how you fast forward, you have a few options: you can either manually turn it faster, set the speed up higher, or (if they even make turntables with this) press the fast forward button on the machine.

    For those wanting to try out vinyl, you ought to start out with a decent 1980s turntable from brands such as 'Technics'.
    You can get belt drive, but I like the DIRECT DRIVE ones, matched up to a good 1980s amp with a 'phono stage' built-in - try a Marantz'.
    If you like the vinyl thing you might want to 'upgrade' to newer gear in the future, but those 1980s units are BUILT LIKE TANKS and are cheap on Ebay and second-hand shops.

    LOL You Don't Fast Forward Vinyl Records , But If want to skip to the next track you have to pick up the needle and move It to the next set of groves (The Fine Black Lines In Between The each set of grove cut outs or each track) Although considering its been 9 years I assume you already know this.
