I served on the America from October 1986 until my discharge in April 1990. I was an AK in S-6 Division. I went through the yard period in '87, work-ups in '88, and the NATO & Med/IO deployments which took up most of '89. It's an experience I'll never forget.
Was AIMD SEAOPDET from NAS. Cecil Field. Did ‘89 NATO from St Thomas to Norway - in port to LeHarve, France, then did Med I/O same year… blue nose and shellback just a few months apart. Did those short deployments off east coast prepping for Desert Shield/Storm. Left America after our port call in Egypt due to my EAOS. I miss all the friends made during my time.
I'm guessing this footage is fairly old. I see those Tomcats are the 'a' version using the older Pratt and Whitney TF-30s. Neither the USS America, nor the F14 are in service anymore :(
i served on the america from 1990 to oct i got out do to hardship i left the ship in the norfilk naval ship yard after being in dry dock i left and never looked back and now i wish i did i wishi could of stayed in longer

I was on this cruise as a plane captain for VFA-82. Awesome ship and an even better squadron
Yeah the Marauders was a good command, my first, didn't know how good until I experienced other commands

Tomcats are the best naval interceptors ever made.
