    It used to be that my vocal warmup session would leave me all tensed up. It was like I got tired and my jaw and neck felt tight before I even started to sing anything real!
    What was worse is that when I tried to warm up my range, going up and down scales, my voice and mind burnt out even quicker. I felt like a failure... And I was just getting warmed up! Something wasn't right.
    So... I stopped warming up altogether. I just started singing parts of my favorite melodies in whatever range my voice wanted to exist in. This brought up some other issues, but I noticed something: I wasn't tense!!
    After some time of really feeling out my voice, I made up THIS warmup and I use it every single day to warm up for singing high notes, and it works every time for me... Without tension... Without the premature burnout.
    Try it !! ...And feel FREE with your voice from the very beginning of your singing sessions!

    I was working on my mixed voice for a while and there was a lot of things in my head like "is it chest or head? okay now I do it different way is it still head voice or mix?" but while doing this warm-up it just triggered me to bump in an unfamiliar but comfortable position and sound. And you know, that was really the first time when I realized that I made a good mix sound which is full, relatively loud but not strained or screamy. That. Was. Cool.

    Thanks for answering a question I had for a long time. If head voice - mix and chest voice had a sort of "blurry" border. Now I see that of course there are benefits to mix voice, it does sound fuller. But at the same time if you want a lighter version because the song requires it. You can also do that. As a stylistic choice sometimes keeping your head voice could also work. Although I admit that I need to be very aware of my support during mix. MOre than during head voice.

    Chris!!! I had a question that I think would be very interesting if you talked about it in a video!
    I am currently in a Into To Singing class in college and one thing our professor does that is interesting is that she does not use the typical "head/chest" register descriptions of singing but rather much more anatomical descriptions of what the vocal folds do to produce the sound.
    It goes:
    Thick fold - "Chest voice"
    Thin fold - "Head voice"
    Stiff fold - breathy
    (I'm not sure I'm remembering this one correctly) Slack fold - Vocal fry.
    I found these anatomical descriptions to be extremely helpful for me to understand my voice and I'm wondering if you've ever heard of them!
    If not, it'd be cool to see a video about you exploring these new, more exact definitions!

    • @AlexDreemurr
      @AlexDreemurr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I messed up lmao.
      Stiff fold is "breathy" and slack fold is vocal fry.

    Hi Chris,
    It's a great exercise but I wouldn't call it a warm up. Maybe I'm being too picky 😅
    I use the term warm up to describe excercises that use all the muscles and structures involved in singing in the same way we warm up to run or play sports. Focus is on activating short and long muscle fibers, increasing blood flow and relaxation by stretching and release of any tension in the body, head or neck.
    That's warming up.
    Then I move on to exercises such as your excellent one in this video to work on specific techniques. In this case to avoid tension and "reaching" for high notes by practicing placement.
    You've got a lot going on here and it's great that you break it down. Very valuable.
    Starting in head voice. Don't reach!
    learning to blend head to chest voice going down
    Learning to blend chest to head voice going up.
    Learning to extend head and chest voice without tension and understanding your limits and increasing flexibility.
    Making specific choices about how you want to sing a passage to get the sound you want.
    This is all really great advanced stuff that takes practice to learn and before singing something that requires you to use those techniques is great to practice them before singing the song.
    But this is not warm up
    This is technique practice.
    Thanks for putting this out there for everyone.
    Kudos for supporting singers to achieve their goals by giving back in this way!

    I always like to start with my head voice when I warm up, way softer for the vocal apparatus especially on bad vocal days and I actually also get suprisingly good results for my chest voice, in my resonances for exemple !
    I sometimes also do start in chest voice, but only with resonant sounds, trying to feel the vibrations in my body using different consonants and mouth/jaw placement (chest, spine, back of the neck, cranium). This is also a fairly soft and good warm up (chest or head) to ease into a richer sound and get a good feel for your vocals

Would you please critique ‘Black Sabbath’z Sabotage album’ with “Ozzy Osbourne???” I am interested to see what you think of his high notez on this album. Maybe if you would compare some of this to Ozzy’z other Black Sabbath music or his music as a Solo Artist (your choice.) Even the song ‘Sabbath Bloody Sabbath’ (from the ‘Sabbath Bloody Sabbath’ album) although a little pitchy at pointz towardz the end of the song is sung in a high range. Of course back in those dayz they basically just recorded live. I love the dramatic feeling of Ozzy’z voice. It’z Theatrical with feeling. Love or hate it… all Artistz have fanz for a reason. It movez them & takez them to a place that they enjoy the feeling & the ride getting there. I have been a huge fan of Ozzy for yearz. People love for me to sing Ozzy’z music. I am so glad I found you. I am a HUGE FAN of yourz. Thank you so much for everything. You ROCK!!!

    I'm a metalhead but I practise head voice by singing Madonna - Like a Prayer and its actually helped increase my range and power. Like a Prayer isn't a particularly high-pitched song, but its the consistency, the drawn out notes, no belting or sudden spikes that really helps and enforces proper technique. Its like getting strong lifting weights by lowering the weight and using really good consistent form.

    Thanks heaps for this video Chris. It has helped me figure out what I really need to work on. After attempting this exercise a couple times, I feel like I am struggling to get good chord closure in head voice and I am unsure how to fix this. When I am doing the vocal pattern in the video I feel like there is an air leak in my vocal chords and at times I run out of breath (especially if I dont take a short break between attempts). I am also finding that if I drink water between each attempt, it helps me get a cleaner (not raspy) sound. I am noticing this only in my head voice. Is there anything I can do to strengthen my chord closure in my head voice? Or do you have any other suggestions that I could try? Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Awesome, I gotta try it!
    Also, a question (as always 😂): I learned how to make distortion using your "breaking" technique and it works pretty well, BUT (of course there's a but) often, especially when playing a show, I can't make the "break" as short as possible, so instead of a powerfull gritty sound I get a ridiculously sounding voice (sounding like someone who can't sing a simple note for shit).
    How to make this break before getting into distortion shorter, so that noone would even notice? Does it have to do anything with support?

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! It does have to do with support for sure, but it also has to do with a certain agility and muscle coordination that takes a specific type of practicing to develop. You might be ready for this? www.mymusicalvoice.com/p/the-aggressive-vocalist-s-master-plan-of-attack

    Hey Mr.Liepe, if you dont mind, can you do a deep analysis video regarding Jon Bon Jovi awful performance during 2022 Tour recently?
    it has been criticized by people lately, and i want to know what is really going on with his voice, and things i need to do to prevent it from happening to me.

    Great video, Chris! You have any videos on warmups for gritty singing and distortion? I think you do but I can’t remember.

    This is a great lesson but I think I broke my head voice from years of improper singing... Can't seem to find it no matter what I do.

    Is it normal when I try to sing a bit quietly, the voice might not come out immediately and appears as just air?

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it is normal, if you have not yet learned how to properly support your voice. Join my free course linked in the video info and I can help you with that!
