  • This six-gill shark (Hexanchus) was filmed during a submersible dive off the northeast coast of Molokai at a depth of 1000m (3280ft). The 2 red laser dots are 6 inches apart, resulting in a length of about 18 ft for the shark.
    Great ecstatic live commentary by University of Hawaii Oceanography Professor Jeff Drazen!
    Many thanks to Dr. Craig Smith (University of Hawaii) and Dr. Eric Vetter for permitting release of this footage which was obtained as part of their research data set.

      😎 I've conditioned my body for holding my breath as long as possible, so that I can start a new hobby of "deep sea snorkeling". ^This is typical of the depth that I dive to, so I run into a LOT of these deep water sharks while snorkeling. I even spotted one at the comparably shallow depth of 1,900 feet last weekend, on my way down to 4,400 feet. 😁👍

    We did about a dozen dives for this project and on nearly all the deep dives we saw one or sometimes several of these 6-gill sharks (Hexanchus griseus). So there appears to be a community or small population of them to be thriving off the northeast coast of Molokai. But the one in this clip was by far the largest one was have seen. Do you get the Great Hammerheads in your area?
      They can reach 18ft - 20ft.
      Tigers can but its rare.
      They spotted a 18ft female in 2018 in French Polynesia.
      I always thought if a truly large individual over 15ft was found, it would be around the Hawaiian islands. Lol
      I have an interest in all sharks but mostly do most of my research on GWs.
      Big Blue (well known GW) was spotted off the coast of Hawaii, on her migration from Guadalupe Island, Mexico and shes about 21.5 ft.
      Pacific Sleeper Sharks may be out in the island areas as well, but very few sightings so far, they live at around the same depth and deeper than the 6th Gill and Prickly sharks hang out.
      They did spot a 23ft female Sleeper off Oahu at 6300ft.

    The 2 red dots from the laser scaler are calibrated to be 6 inches apart at all distances. You can measure the shark by freezing frames and counting the multiples of 6 inches that make up the length of the animal. Give it a try!

    He's surprisingly slow for such a large shark. Then again, his food isn't going anywhere, what's the rush?
    Excellent video! Thanks a bunch for sharing. 5+

      I'm pretty sure this is a species of sleeper shark, a genus named after their sluggish speeds.

  • @HURLSubOps
    @HURLSubOps  15 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The 2 red laser beams are exactly parallel and the dots are 6 inches apart at any distance. So if you freeze a frame and count the number of times the 2 red dots fit on the shark, you can get a pretty good idea of how long or wide it is. It is probably not accurate to the inch but certainly to within a foot or two.
    Thanks for your interest!

      everything in his creation is beautiful you say? you mean like diseases? bacteria? cancer? death? unfairness? and everything else? plus these animals will most likely eat you if you happen to be around them. you only say its beutful behind a screen, would like you to say that when you are next to it.

    • @nadeemsmarty
      @nadeemsmarty 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      john vines dude yes everything death disease unfairness every damn thing in the universe . Amd yes it will kill if i am stupid to be there and yes it is the almighty who has put reasoning into everything . Im not here to debate just to let you know the reason he said subhanallah

    • @johnvines4875
      @johnvines4875 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Aquario Hub
      You think I don't know the reason he said it? but he attributed that everything is a WOW to ALLAH !!! And I Said, there is no ALLAH or juju monster that is responsible for it, I know Islam very good, and all the allah crap, I speak Arabic, and I also read the Quran and both Arabic and English, I just dont get the Allah crab. my point is, this has nothing to do with allah.

    sleeper shark for sure

    • @saradhewanto2639
      @saradhewanto2639 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Poseidon Flow it is not a sleeper shark, while they are distantly related, (the order of the sleeper sharks are the closest order to hexanchiformes (cow sharks) if you do not include the frilled sharks having their own order (it is debatable)) they are not sleeper sharks, they are cow sharks which includes sevengills and sixgills. This sharks is hexanchus griseus (bluntnose sixgill shark) it lives at great depths and is a different species to the other sixgills (Hexanchus nakamurai and Hexanchus vitulus).

    • @darkprose
      @darkprose 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, I think Sara’s right. The shark in this video clearly has six gills. Pacific sleepers have five, I think.
