    I have a 14th one for you, too. They are short-tailed so you don't have to dock nor worry about fly-strike because they're cleaner.

      @ToupsTime I'd love a st croix ram some day too but I'll be starting with a white dorper ram for now. Love the st croix ewes though! I have jacobs now and they aren't very friendly. It took months for them to walk up and sniff me. I still can't pet them. First time with the st croix i had one chewing my thumb within a few minutes 😆

    Aloha Toup family, I appreciate this video because I am also looking for a few animals to control the weeds on my 1-acre homestead in Hawaii. Many of my neighbors have goats but you convinced me to go with St. Croix.!!! Mahalo

      That is so awesome to hear! We do look forward to ours! Also, as I’m sure you gathered, they were brought to the U.S. from the Virgin Islands (St. Croix) so I’m sure they’d fit right into your tropical climate!!!! God bless you! Thank you so much for watching!!!

      @@OurFruitfulFamily Looks like there are a few people here selling the St. Croix sheep or St. Croix cross so, please pray for me because I think the sheep will solve several issues I have. Weeds, need for fresh raw milk, meat, and the companionship and sense of purpose. God Bless n thank you again!

    The weed you want them to eat it’s actually a natural dewormer! You can buy it in pellets to feed during the winter.

      @OurFruitfulFamily  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn’t know they made it in pellets haha! I did read about it’s deworming effects though! God bless you Kendra!

    Thank you for the information. Wife and I have 4 acres of tropical rainforest that is quite weedy and kind of rugged. We will have to check local breeders and dept of ag., but this sounds like a lot of solutions rolled into one fantastic animal. Not quite sure if we will go with Barbados black belly St. Croix😃🌈🤙

    1st time viewer instant sub, likes, giggles, and bells such a fun couple... looking forward to the next videos :) I am researching sheep now... what do you think of the highlanders? I was thinking highlander and Idaho pasture pigs with rabbits and chickens to start my animal husbandry at the new homestead, but now you have me working on researching St Croix sheep vs highlander. LOL
    I don't want to have to get up at 3 am to milk the cows, but maybe some day Dexter cows...

    • @OurFruitfulFamily
      @OurFruitfulFamily  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are too kind! Thank you so much for the sub! We need a lot more! Tell all your friends hahaha! On a serious note, haha 😂, I have looked into the highlanders during our research. I honestly, after lots of researching, didn’t see any breed that I thought would be terribly difficult to raise. We settled on St. Croix for many small reasons. The biggest two would probably be the foot rot resistance and the parasite resistance though. On our farm, we try to carefully choose each breed of animal so that they are the most self sufficient of their species. We found the St. Croix to be the lowest maintenance of the hair sheep. We want so many different animals on the farm so the less maintenance per animal, the better for us. I am just loving raising these sheep thus far. Hopefully Bob does a good job breeding them all and our flock can double or even triple by next year! God bless you! I look forward to seeing your comments in the future!

      @@OurFruitfulFamily I meant rye lander, but I guess that you knew what I meant... just saying to clear that up for anyone researching both at this point. I am making sure that I fully research everything before I start because you are pretty much locked in for awhile after buying your livestock, especially if don't just want standard commercial breeds.

      @@barking.dog.productions1777 Highlander is a sheep breed as well haha! But you are right, look at the traits that appeal to you the most and go that route! You are locked in for the long haul once you get them haha!

    Love your videos! We're thinking about getting St. Croix sheep. Do they eat flowering shrubs and flowers?

    • @OurFruitfulFamily
      @OurFruitfulFamily  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much Heather! I do have lots of dandelions and they clear those out when they pop up. I’ve seen them eat briars. Lots of other undesirable plants. I don’t have any shrubs in their location for them to try but who knows lol. They eats lots of things my cows turn their nose to.

      @heatherrichards9130 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OurFruitfulFamily thank you for replying! I don't mind if they eat dandelions, I just was wondering if they'd mess with some azalea bushes we have and other plants we want to keep. 😅

    With all your research, How many of these sheep can you put on an acre of land? And how often do you rotate them between padics? Thanks. Happy Homesteading

    • @OurFruitfulFamily
      @OurFruitfulFamily  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depending on your quality of pasture, 5-6 sheep per acre would be a good rule for the low end. I’ve seen as high as 10 if you have High quality pasture. As for rotation, you want to keep an eye out on them and your pasture. You don’t want the grass to get eaten down past 2” of height. That’s when you start to get close to where parasites like to hangout. You will have to learn how quickly your herd eats down the grass in the paddock size that you choose to keep them in. You definitely don’t want them eating at the dirt. We will be doing a bunch of follow up videos on the sheep. Being this is our first time as shepherds, we have a lot of real world experience to learn now! Follow along and learn with us! Haha! God bless you!!!

      @@OurFruitfulFamily And, of course, one can do a lot more if willing to buy in hay. I'm on 1.8ac and the pasture is fairly good, plus enough browse to keep my goats happy, but I order 100 bales a year and kidding season offsets that cost plus some of my feed, too.

    • @OurFruitfulFamily
      @OurFruitfulFamily  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This spring will be our very first lambing on the homestead. To be honest, I don’t know what to expect. If you can email me your information, I can let you know when they lamb out and we can go from there. I definitely plan to sell some rams though. Just don’t have a solid plan just yet on how I’ll go about that in terms of a schedule.

    How easy are they to milk?

    • @OurFruitfulFamily
      @OurFruitfulFamily  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have yet to milk ours because we have milk cows and don’t need the extra milk. From what I read, they milk similar to goats and from what I’ve seen, there teets get way larger than expected.

    • @johnfolk1448
      @johnfolk1448 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Now that's good info. I've milked meat and milking goats, and the difficulty milking meat goats is quite a bit more because of smaller teets. Here on Kauai, it's easy for me to find st Croix, so I think I'll give them a shot. Thanks!
