I had the great honor to see Bela and Tony perform a concert together (just the two of them) at Godfrey Daniels coffee house in Bethlehem, PA. It was an amazing concert and their encore was performing a blistering bluegrass number together - on ONE banjo - switching hands throughout the song without missing a beat! It was a “we are not worthy” moment, for sure! 😊

I was 25 in 1977 when the first time listening to Larry Mc Neely's then I bought a cheap Taiwanese Banjo to learn to play it. And since my hobby was (and still Is) woodworking then I built myself one. And never leave home without it ever since even though I've been a huge rock fan.

Thanks for sharing. I'm 33 and carry my banjo everywhere with me. If my time comes; I'd rather be with it when I go. I hope to build my own soon. Your comment is certainly encouraging.

Seeger himself was exceptionally humble about his banjo playing.

Here you've got two of the world's best banjo players telling you how good Seeger was and you're dissing him. Sigh.

They're being gracious -- which is in very good taste. Pete Seeger's contributions to what was then broadly called Roots music were manifold and are difficult to properly appreciate in their entirety. But as far as his banjo playing is concerned -- no, it doesn't *really* take both Tony Trischka and Béla Fleck to equal or replicate his playing. Béla's comment was cute, rooted in a deep and abiding respect, and likely pregnant with some of the meaning I outlined above, but certainly not meant to be taken literally.

Seegar was an unrepentant communist who literally sang Hitler's praises following the Soviet party liine before Barbarossa. He was a mediocre musician who benefitted form unearned praise by the left-wing press.

These guys are both light-years beyong Seegar. He was never more than mediocre.

Yes, I don't get it either. The book to get was the Scruggs book. It must be a tribe thing

The.Scruggs book may not have been published when they started out. Similarly with Weissberg.
