    Hi Garden Friends! While these bulbs/tubers/corms/bare roots are starting to appear in store now in late Winter, it is too soon to plant these out in cooler garden zones. You can purchase now, but wait until the ground is workable in Spring to plant things like lily bulbs, bare root fruit starts, and perrenial starts. As for the dahlias, canna's, etc, these are not cold tolerant, as such you would wait until after your last frost date has passed to plant these outside. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching. Take care! -Steph

      If my ground is workable, can I go ahead and plant now? I’m in 6B and my last frost is usually around April 10, but we aren’t going below freezing in the 10 day forecast - highs in the 60s! It’s making me want to get out into the garden. If I’m getting hardy perennials, can I plant now?

Here's a tip, try calling your store ahead of your visit to make sure they have them in stock, and they might even be able to tell you if they have the varieties your looking for if there not too busy when you call.

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, Depends on the type of plant. If its a hosta for example yes you'll get foliage. Things like Dahlias, you'll get blooms by end of summer thorugh fall, and Canna lillies are warm weather annuals, so those will bloom as well. However, anything perrenial, maybe or may not bloom this year. They might only bloom next year. Hope this helps.

    I like to walk around Lowes & HD but it's been years since I bought anything from them. Same thing year after year=- no variety. I order from the various catalogues, mostly on-line and many of which carry unusual or rare offerings. Usually it costs less than the store to tell the truth and the germination rate is close to 100%. I start in January and by tax day (4/13) blooms are appearing when I plant.
    This year I've ordered some rare caladiums, odd peppers, unique tomatoes, some ornamental peppers, parrot's beak, etc

    we have non of that here in Minnesota, only seeds .. I am wondering now how fresh of a supply we are getting here in MN if we are the last in the country to start spring
    those pots with peonies got me thinking also, are they planted in the fall? or juts now before they send it to the store? coz that matters, you won't get blooms or you will get blooms guaranteed , right ?? I would buy it if blooms were guaranteed , those two varieties are very good to start a peony collection .. Lillies are at good price , I would get them foe sure

    Those are so many nice varieties. I love tulips, daffodils and many other bulbs but my soil is clay, and it takes a lot to amend it. Can bulbs like dahlias, lilies and hostas be planted in flower pots be wintered indoors for the next growing season? The bunnies eat the leaves off my lilies; free salad bar for them, lol! TFS!

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Cami, I would say yes that you could try overwintering them in pots. I would let them go dormant and not water until you bring the pots back out in Late winter in preparation for Spring. Give it a try and see how it goes. 😏

The hostas I've bought there are just amazing. And the grapes are already leafing out in pots and buckets in the greenhouse. Going back for another plant haul later today.

    Hi Steph, HortTube with Jim Putnam just posted a video about growing potatoes in grow bags. Maybe that would work for you. Last year he had a good potato harvest. Last fall I planted garlic in the ground and in Smart Pots grow bags. The garlic is coming up in both places so I'm excited to see how they do when it comes time to harvest around the 4th of July.

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Laura, Thank you so much for the suggestion. I actually did try grow bags with mine, but I think my issue was that I didn't top them off with compost once they started sending up the foliage shoots. I'll have to check out Jim's vid. Yay for garlic coming up! This is my first year growing garlic, and I also have shoots. Hopefully it works out for us both.

  • @denisebedford4641
    @denisebedford4641 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, but it is the perfect time to put them into shallow pots in a greenhouse and set out in another month. I have found that so many of these do not survive even when you plant them directly in the ground after the last frost date. And I've learned that if you wait to buy them until after the last frost date, they'll be too dried out from being in the bag for so long that they have little chance of surviving. If you buy them now, pot them inside, then set them out in early April (in Maryland, anyway) it's just like buying the potted versions for a lot less money. It took me too many years to learn this, so hopefully, my lessons learned will help someone else. We need more beauty in our world today. Gardening is something everyone can relate to!

    • @saiikik2727
      @saiikik2727 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try soaking them in water before planting. I think what you’ve basically done is called presprouting and that works too.
