That moment when you realise what the number plate ACTUALLY signifies.
Wtrxprs007able honestly I didnt even know Australia manufactured cars.
Joe King we've been building cars for a long time. Ford closed down their factory last month after 91 years of manufacturing.
I do like these cars. I've only seen one Monaro in the UK. When I went to Austrailia, Holden Commodores and Ford Falcons were everywhere. All awesome cars.
They're a lot of fun. But yeah, you'll see plenty of Monaros over here in Australia. They're everywhere. I personally wish I had the money for one...
Not really you don't see a monaro everyday in oz . Gto more than a week until you spot one
Aussie Fords and Holdens are/were great cars. Big, strong and tough. We miss them already. 😕
TONS of Commodores in NZ and Australia. It's bassically the bogan Miata. $500 for a rwd front engine car and you can get parts for really really cheap. Sometimes the v8s go for real cheap too, track car, drag car, drift car, anything you want.
V8 engines and gearbox are the only preexisting GM parts used on the VE, VE Series 2 and VF. Holden Australia designed and engineered the rest as well as building and doing development work on the SIDI 3.6L V6 engine found in so many GM vehicles today.
This car looks so awesome! I love australian cars, especially Holden and HSVs
Faster than a Ferrari 575 .
Testing a powerful rear wheel drive on a wet day... who would want to go fast on a wet day ?
Its because they dont have good weather and have no choice but to test in wet
Wouldn't have that problem in Australia
Holden is better then all high end cars, You get a beautiful fast good car for excellent money!
Actually you are incorrect. There are some high end cars which are better than a Holden.
Stephen De Tomasi also that's the reason holden is leaving Australia because there cars are impractical no needs a big bulky 5 seater mostly every one wants a nimble 4 seater or a big work ute for towing it's just how it works
I wish we could get more Holdens in the US. Gorgeous cars.
Majority of Commodores sold here have V6's... The older 3.6 Alloytech and current 3.6L SIDI engine are built here in Holden's S.A engine plant.
Jeez, why not wait for a dryer day, what a pointless exercise.
+Graham Smith They said it quite often on the show. It's around a 3 second difference between a dry and wet lap. So you can have a rough estimate of the actual time. Which I would imagine to be about right as that means it's a few points of a second behind the 6.0 VZ variant they ran around the track in the dry.
There isn't a huge difference between the 6.0 and 5.7 in terms of out right pace. Talking what a 15-20hp difference as standard between the GTO's.
What a coencidence.... Everytime that holden or vauxhall does a lap on top gear test track it raynned
The Holden Monaro looks and sounds like a great car. I have never driven one nor have I ever seen what the performance is like but I do know it's an awesome, fast, Aussie built car. Every time I see a Monaro I can't help but point it out. I would love to own a Monaro or a Holden in general. I want to have a Holden Commedore as my first car. Holden's are reliable, fast, built perfectly, safe and great cars. Now that Holden will no longer be building cars in Australia, it's sad to many Holden lovers. Even Ford will stop building cars here in 2016. I honestly really like the Ford Falcon. It's got a great shape and is reliable like a Holden.
Now is the time to get a CV8 monaro, because the prices are taking a hike, lost opportunity to get a "classic" monaro... 100-300K now
Commodores are cheap, get one. I have a commodore engine in my EK Panelvan, Best thing
holden is owned by GM. so its not an ozzy car its yank. its why the factories r being closed and shiped to the states. Vauxhall and Opel r the same cars as holden just with diff badges on them.
Vauxhall probably make the monaro in the UK but use a diff name for it.
Vauxhall, Opel and Holden r all the same company using the same designs just diff model names.
Austin, morris, Riley and Woosley in the UK were all seperate companies but to cut building costs used the same basic design.
IE Austin mini very basic car no thrills or extras. plastic seats. no guages on the dasboard just a speedo. no carpets or window winders. piece of string to open the door from inside.
Morris cooper more mid range with a few extras fabric seats more guages ie they added a fuel gauge which the austin version didnt have, window winders and door handles carpets and a better engine.
Riley used the same chasis and body but added more luxery stuff like wooden dashboard instead of metal. leather seats. and wings on the back for the tail lights to fit in.. woosley added even more stuff like a bigger radiator grill more like u would find on a rolls royce.
Before GM bought out Holden, Vauxhall and Opel they were making top of the range cars and competing with rolls royce. now they just make poor quality cars as cheap as they can using very poor quality parts and sell them for far more than their worth.
Opel is German and was an independant company. but holden is just the ozzy name for vauxhall and has always been part of the vauxhall company. Holdens might be bigger than vauxhall and have more power but thats due to having longer distances to drive than the UK and wider roads. but still the same cars.
Correction. The British version of this car is called the Vauxhall Monaro GTO, And the Aussie one called The Holden Monaro GTO :)
10 years since this comment was posted, so I'll be the pedantic one.. The British version is the Vauxhall Monaro VXR** and the Aussie one is called the HSV Coupe GTO**
Holden and Australian fords are better than the pommy cars
Anthony Koomen they sure are! If you like for the car to stare at a shop wall
Too all others here
Have you realised that most other car companies in Europe have been around and well funded for a long time
Australia isn't supported on its car manufacturers like in Europe
Behind the eightball as it were and yet we still contribute as best as we can.
And i dont know why these companies like jag and bmw and Mercedes bother testing and building cars over there when its all restricted.
Come to Australia go to alice springs
Drive north all the roads and straights you possibly want. its all available straight away you can drive across Belgium twice as the distance its takes too cross one State of Australia
Better weather
Better space to drive
Better market potential
Better country to own a car in end of.
2007 video: The license plate is 2017
Me: We have to wait another decade.
Nice stereo in the Holden Commodores.
No, The Holden Monaro/Commodore doesn't suck. They just showed exactly what it is. A simple, heavy, rear drive car that gets sideways very easily. It's what old school muscle cars were like, only this is slightly safer and more refined. They're really comfortable, seat five big blokes comfortably, and will still accelerate hard up a hill with those five blokes and their luggage on board. I own a Commodore wagon, and it's perfect for road tripping in a big continent.
'the salesman stayed at the dealership because of bad weather'
hahahahahaaaa....
This car ain't made for speed, it's made for burning rubber
Right from the mid 1960s, the two door Monaro was a proper Aussie beast.
Hammond loved it. Richard couldn’t handle an Australian vehicle pushing the limits with half the price of anything British.
Plus the car looks insane!.
Most people don't realize that the Holden Monaro was introduced in Australia in 2001. 3 years before they brought it to the USA.
And now you have the Chevy SS which is the Holden VF SS Commodore
Last day of manufacturing today, about 7ks from my house
And look what the commodore name has become... The fucking fwd 2liter econobox 😥
Middle Class Bogan not that I really care about holdens, but it was made here and gave us jobs, a year before it shut down we paid millions of dollars in taxes to keep it open but Holden took the money and fucked off too America, I say to you what car could you buy with a 6 cylinder or v6 engine for under 40,000 ford and Holden were the only choices but now it’s gone to shit
@@flynnjacobs1662 I feel sad for you Aussies. Even though Holden have not really done anything in the UK but in Australia Holden is an important thing and they have made some truly tremendous and interesting cars that I would really like to own but in the UK these cars have kept there value quite well and they are quite expensive but I still really want one. It's sad to see an portant manufacturer die. The same thing happened to Saab Oldsmobile and Pontiac. Its a GM thing I guess
@@middleclassbogan9741 Yeah the new commodore is a rebadged Opel Insignia which is a German car which is quite sad
@@terrificspokesman7416 even ford have stopped making territories, no more falcons it's shit house, left my baxr6 abandoned and it'll be like toranas used to be. Worth nothing at the time but in 20 years who knows
I love how Americans think they invent everything..
Wifi - Aussie invention
power-board - aussie invention
power drill - aussie invention
ute - aussie invention
aircraft bblack box's - aussie invention.. and the list continues
Alot of what we Invented here in the tiny country of Australia has influenced your country massively.
Remember that. its the same with this VF Commodore :)
Vauxhaul was an english co, Opel was a German co, Holden was an Aussie co, they are all now owned by General Motors. USA. The Monaro is made in Australia and exported to Europe as a Monaro and exported to the USA as a Pontiac GTO
So basically you got
Vauxhall Monaro vxr which is made by HSV the sports Holden company in Victoria.
The Pontiac Gto is just a standard Holden Monaro exported to America made by Holden in south Australia.
One gives 297kw
The standard gives 295kw
The Vauxhall (Holden Monaro)
Has some extra features the 2004 VXR is a HSV product and comes with short headers and a 2.5" dual exhaust system, it also has a uprated cold air intake, maf pipe and more agressive engine map.
So they are both Holden monaros
One is the Holden Monaro VXR8 or VXR
Wich is Vauxhall in uk and America
And the other is
Holden Monaro cv8 wich is Pontiac Gto in america .
its amazing how little they changed the look of the car with the re badged pontiac GTO
The body kit is hsv gto .
Ben Chesterman it is sometimes it has a different names the HSV GTS Coupé, Holden Monaro, and of course the Vauxhall Monaro VXR
I love Australian V8 utes you can't beat them. From the UK
I think what you meant to say was: designed and engineered in Australia using a US driveline, assembled with pride in Australia using Aussie bolts by car loving Aussies.
I was see this video at the age 2017 XD
@KPAracing now don't forget that i am Australian (and proud of it), but Australia has never produced what would be considered "A Supercar" in Europe (which lets not forget is where supercars come from). Italy Germany and Great Britain have always paved the way in racing thoroughbreds and supercars.
Cheers for your time!!!!!
This car is called an HSV (Holden Special Vehicle) GTO Coupe' in New Zealand and Australia. It is the VZ model which has the 6.0Litre LS2 motor rated at 297kw. My dad has one in Devil Yellow....sexy azz!
Jeremy and Richard you are wrong!!! 20 and 17 is the number of the year when i saw this video!!!
I really loved this show 😁👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻👌🏻
I too would have liked to have seen how it would have compared on a dry track, especially since I have one...same year and everything.
i think holden and chev have a great relationship! one designs and the ohter provides the power!!...damn this car today still is awsome on the streets of sydney!!!...holden is australias best!!
@pegleg1992 Yes, the model seen here (and the VZ) was based on an Opel and had Chevrolet engine options.
But the current (VE) Commodore was designed by Holden, and is built in Australia. Virtually all of the parts are made on site at the Elizabeth plant, and all of the engines (with the exception of the V8s, which are US-built LSs) are built in Port Melbourne.
It doesn't get much more Australian than that. Chevrolet could stand to take a leaf from their book and stop outsourcing everything.
looks like they were running it with the traction control on and that is the base model monaro should of had the HSV out there would of put there M3 to shame
holden made lawn mowers haha and lamborghini made tractors lol
@anno250 The chassis wasn't just loosely based on "the Opel." The VT Commodore is built entirely on the GM V platform, which may have been revised quite a bit by you fine fellows but the foundations of the original German chassis are still there.
Also I'm not arguing that the car, and company, isn't Australian. I'm simply saying that the engine and chassis aren't. I still call Monaros, Commodores, and our version, the Vauxhall VXR8, Australian.
Holden made the Monaro and HSV DID sell 2 Monaro variants, one called the GTO and the other was a GTS. GM in the US then picked it up and called it a Pontiac GTO
@priman0cte
I could be wrong but initially I think it just meant small V8 & big V8.
The block is the base shell or cast of the engine where all other components are fitted into & around, but I'm not 100% sure cause I haven't thought about the specifics of engines for some 20yrs.
@fordfan197 You are wrong the 1st production Holdens were actually made in 1917 an imported chassis and sold through Dodge Brothers dealers where they sold almost 5000 in the first year. Previous to that Holden & Frost experimented using Rover chassis amongst others. In 1919 Holden's Motor Body Builders Limited was formed. The 48-215 was the 1st General Motors Holden production car.
Facts. The Holden Monaro is made in Australia.
General Motors is an American firm, and General Motors Holden is an Australian susiduary of GM.
The Holden Monaro is exported from Australia to many countries around the world being sold in England as a Vauxhall Monaro and in the United states as a Pontiac GTO.
The Holden Monaro has ceased production with the NEW 4 door Holden Commodore is it's replacement, still being sold as a Vauxhall and a GTO.
it was a reference to the rugby world cup match which we had just been kncked out by the poms, again
I have owned and driven 2 Falcons and occasional problems were mainly electrical, however parts are readily available and reasonably priced, try fixing continental cars and you will come up against some really stiff pricing, and that includes VW.
Am I psychic or is it just a coincidence that it says 2017 when Holden’s assembly plant shut down and went abroad?
might just have something to do with the parent company. Look what Australia did to the old Buick aluminium V8 - it was turned in to a Formula One winning motor (the Repco Brabham engine).
The good old Monaro
@KPAracing UUmmmm, i was born in Wangi-Wangi and lived in NSW until i was 20. I learned to drive 18 years ago in a holden Gemini, and passed my test in the same car, then had 2 Monaros (1 being the GTS fastback).... i returned to Oz for 3 years a few years back and owned 2 consecutive SS Utes (1 GTS). You shouldn't be so assumptive about people you don't know.
And actually, the GM bigwig said that we run a much better show than those in the US. He said that he wanted to start using more Aussie designs because they are better. They also took on the statesman...
Pontiac manufactured this car here in the US from 2004-2006 as the GTO, same thing with the Commodore from 08-09. Both cars are masterpieces, and they still hold up to this day. It's so sad that both Holden and Pontiac are gone now...
It was actually manufactured by Holden, they just leave the same factory with a different badge and get shipped over
You guys only got a few models and very low spec ones at that. Missed out on every other model commodore and mainly the good ones
@@brocksinclair66my dream is to own a GTO(monaro ) Chevy SS(commodore) and hopefully import a UTE to the United States . I feel like I'm the biggest Holden fan in America 😂
There is quite a few different skyline models that came with 4 doors and a straight 6 turbo
thanks. more plz! TG is hte best
Sadly, 2017 is when Holden ended their production :(
I like how there was no Vauxhall even mentioned
guys i think its basically a GTO with a different badge -.-
its just a LS1, RWD, 2 door, muscle car
I saw them on my last trip to Australia in 2002 and I think they look better than the US Pontiac GTO version.
It kills me when people say what you just said, they're the same freaking car. And the pontiac is as friggin awsome as the holden becuse they're the same friggin car!!
i agree.. i have a holden SV6 and even on stock it is fast enough to leave those imprezas and rx8s miles behind
GM bought Holden in 1931, champ. They were very much owned by GM. Infact these commodores were Opel based. Holden only started making their own commodore designes in 2006. Suggest looking into it.
im australian n i love hsv
@markmarshall39 yeah. i remember seeing the G8 and the G8 ute. loved the top gear episode about the vauxhall. was hoping to get that ute though. would have loved it
How quick was it on a dry track ?
dude im australin and i work for holden's design department i know more about whats going on then you do
In the United States America they sale this car but it's under the name Pontiac GTO but it's the same car from Australia.
ur right there, im not thinking straight
This Vaxhall Monaro is nothing more than an Austrailian version of the Ponitac GTO.
It is Austrailian and that by itself is very cool in every way.I just hope that Canadas Magna International will do well with the Vauxhall.
I won a 1997 Vectra and I lov the car.The Monaro,would be the elite
quite a bit slower in the wet. would be interesting to see what time it does in the dry but it always rains in the uk
Around 190-300 kw of power depending on conditions and this car was made as a typical muscle car not a fancy European cheat no supercharger on most variants and was the only coupe built in Australia with a V8 option in 2000-2007 model badging: (first badging VT) (second badging V2)
That is the first time Ive heard him say something about modding.
The Holden Monaro was exported to the US as the GTO
Just read that Holdens have recalled their utes for the tailgates falling down all the time. And this was recall number 35 for this year alone yup Holden quality to be ashamed of!
And? Your point? Lamborghini started making super cars on their own accord. They were bought out by an overseas company that took the company in a different direction.
Holden wouldn't even be around today if GM didn't buy them.

Sir Jonny Wilkinson DU ÄR BÄST!
The original 2004 pontiac GTO. Thanks to Donut media for that information. I wonder if anyone who bought a gto back then knew they were getting a Monaro.
This IS the GTO!
GM owns monaro and it is a GTO. GM also owns vauxhaul. infact, if you haven't noticed, almost every car GM sells in america actually started from platform from one of GM's around the world divisions...
yeah yeah!!!
we beat you in two world cups in a row now. :P
Its a holden monaro, vauxhall monaro, pontiac gto, and chevy lumina ss....my opinion i like the look of the chevy lumina ss most, its funny how in america the chevy lumina/caprice died in the 90s and was never a sportscar but now i find those names still exist(even in a sporty way) thats a slick one gm
should have been playing james reynes hammerhead as he went around hammerhead..lol
yes it is go on the holden site and have a look hsv gto monaro
2017....also when Holden and Australian vehicle manufacturing died. I send my respects as an American
great
They reckon he's not quite the same person he was before the crash.
with a couple of $k spent on one, its fairly hard to keep up with one in australia, i test drove a recent F6, the salesman stayed at the dealership becouse of cold weather. i draged one of at the lights using a automatic trans. i was struggling to keep up with one using the tiptronic shift. i understand that turbo lag might of been a worry for the low rpm, but the difference over about 800m was incredible.
The reason it looks like a GTO - "The Pontiac GTO was relaunched in the United States in 2004, a rebadged third generation Holden Monaro" - Wikipedia.
@pegleg1992
You could think of it as a jigsaw puzzle, Holden puts it together using its own (most notably look and feel) and GM's (mostly mechanical parts) which is modified to fit in place of Holden's jigsaw puzzle.
The origin of this car is a deceptiveley simple one.
Today Holden got its death announced.
I'm not saying he's mental/crazy or anything.
I saw the show where he mentioned celery too, but it might have been a joke to just get on with the show, y'know?
Ah well, he's alive & he's back & seems happy & that's great. :)
the new camaro is a holden underneath, it is after all built on the zeta chassis and road tested down under
yeah just took you guys 4 countrys lol hahaha
@79HZGTS but vauxhall are linked with holden so techincally they both ring up and say i have an idea and then make it and sell it as either holden or vauxhall
the first car is basically a pontiac gto that can handle LOL!
No not necessarily. But Lamborghini was started and has a long history with Italians. Holden always has been owned by Americans (at least while they were building cars). They use American engines, gear boxes and parts. Only the commodore and some Cruzes are made in Australia the rest of their fleet is made overseas. At least all Lamborghinis are owed, designed, manufactured and built in Italy by Italians. GM owns and operates Holden.
top gear called it 8 years ago. check out the number plate- they knew when holden were closing down
Haha, thought the same thing.
TN200SX WHYYYYYYYYYYYY, I would understand if they were still making cars like this. But now just when they start competing in the european car scene they shut down.
Yep but held out in australia the longest of the manufacturing vehicles
Oh my god, RIP Holden 😭😢😭 i really want a vl
The comment is 7years old and holden shutted down in 2020💀
