This specific performance of this song brings me to tears every single time I hear it. Becca---it is a masterpiece. To borrow a descriptor from Judy Collins, you have created a song that is timeless about the potential of our nation, yet simultaneously "of a time"-- right now, in terms of how we as a people are dealing with each other. I would be very surprised if when you played this for Croz for the first time, he was not crying. "And no, they can't quiet us down. And every time they try we're gonna sing a thousand times as loud." This line sounds to me like an extension of David's voice throughout so much of his work. No wonder he thought the world of you.

This song is perfect - destined to be a favourite track on the forthcoming album and in her live set for years to come.

    Hey Ma,
    I got a new job
    Keeping me happy
Fighting for the rights of the ones who need it the most It's what I always wanted to do
Finally living by the words I learned from you
That we've got nothing without love
    And one another
    Hey Ma,
    There was a new guy
    Keepin' me happy
But he had a problem being kind
To people who don't look like him
And when I saw him lookin' down on my friends
I said you'll never love me if you can't love them,
And we've got nothing without love
    So I let him go
    Hey Ma,
The news is getting me down
We've got so far to go
And too little love to go around
People are sayin' we don't deserve to be here
Well this is not, no, this is not the America I know
    So Ma
    We're gonna stand strong tomorrow
So every child is able to sing with new meaning
Of peace and love and liberty
Their home is ever lost 'til we let freedom ring
Cause we've got nothing without each other
    Hey Ma,
I wish you could see the streets today
We can cover so much ground
When we hold each other up along the way
Everyone is proud to be here
Cause liberty for you and me is the America we know
    Mama,
You got a new job from now on
    You gotta finish my story
Pick up from where I left off
And no, they can't quiet us down
And every time they try we're gonna sing a thousand times as loud
    We've got nothing without love...
...This is not, no, this is not the America we know

Crosby is a part of Ground UP Music, her label. She's also backed him on a couple of his most recent albums, tours and even his tiny desk concert. As a matter of fact, I believe Croz gave her the challenge to write a song about the civil unrest and protests and this was the result. I remember her saying something along those lines at GUM fest a couple of years ago.

@@Matarman Thanks..After the 1992 Rodney King riots StephenStills went on Arsenio Hall and sang a great song about it. The video is not on YT, there is only audio. The best song about "everything" is Crosby backing up Jackson Browne in Italian TV 1987 --The Word Justice. th-cam.com/video/FAf54vu70YQ/w-d-xo.html

A powerful tribute to Heather Heyer, the 32-year-old activist who was killed at the "Unite The Right" rally in Charlottesville, VA, Aug. 12, 2017. White nationalists descended on the city to “take America back” by rallying against plans to remove a statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee. Heather's mother said, "Heather 'always defended what she believed in. . . . I turn my attention to carrying forth her message. You don’t get to silence my kid and get away with it. I'm going to speak even louder." the word is David Crosby prompted Becca Stevens to write and sing the song.
