    NB.
    . Tshombe led the secession of the copper rich province from Congo in July 1960 with the encouragement of Belgium and Western powers who feared that Lumumba would lead Congo into the Soviet sphere.
    . Tshombe left the country but later returned and became the Prime Minister of the whole country. He was later dismissed by the country's President.
    . Tshombe was flying in a British-owned and piloted plane when it was hijacked over the Mediterranean Sea and diverted to Algeria. He was held in captivity in Algeria without charges been brought against him although he had been sentenced to death in absentia.
    . He died in captivity and was buried in Brussels, Belgium.
