    Thanks for the review, Just ordered a Yakima Gatekeeper for my Ram 1500. Im excited about the moulded mounts and G hooks! Was tempted by the Darien DLX Curve but those moulded mounts won it for me!

    • @TheLoamWolf
      @TheLoamWolf  ปีที่แล้ว

      The curve may have offered a slightly better fit for your Ram, depending on tailgate style. But the Yakima is def better overall. Let us know how it works for you! Dusten, our photog, has been rocking the Yakima on his F250 since we filmed this series.

    as a detailer, Microfiber is good and bad for paint..
    good at not marring/scratching the paint when its 400+ GSM.... but debris clings to it...so make sure your tailgate is clean prior to install, otherwise you'll most be dragging debri against your paint.
    I've been looking at a couple Amazon brands along with a couple from here.

    • @fenderskirt66
      @fenderskirt66 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fellow detailer here checking in! I agree with your sentiment on microfiber. Did you ever decide on a pad?

    As i've gotten older, more and more friends have dropped mountain biking from their hobbies. So I moved down to a half size Fox Overlander tailgate pad and it's been pretty great so far.

    • @TheLoamWolf
      @TheLoamWolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Solid choice. If we weren't always taking a bunch of bikes out, I would be right there with ya, two bike pads are sweet!

    • @pezjr1157
      @pezjr1157 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How you like the Fox? It look like it doesn’t have enough padding where the bike ties down and could be a potential wear spot.

    • @74jcd
      @74jcd ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the T2 Raceface half and I swear it is literally the same as the Overlander except branding.

    I've been doggedly devoted to my 1upUSA rack for years, but I just acquired a pickup, so now I am eyeballing these for big days and shuttle duty.

    After watching this video a couple of times I don't feel like I have a reason to choose one over the others. Perhaps the differences between the different pads isn't that great OR they kinda all fall short; it's hard to tell from the reviewer's assessments. Answers like: "it depends. It depends on who's tailgate" offers zero information. Is the product too small? too big? etc.
    As a potential tailgate pad purchaser, I'm interested in padding -protection of the bike frame, protection of the tailgate paint, quality of workmanship, will it hold up. After that, MAYBE ease of installation...
    Besides that, TOO MANY ADS for a video that is essentially (or should be) a kind of sales pitch for the tailgate pads.

    Since I don't own a pickup but occasionally test them, I love having a Bomber Strap ready to go in the garage.

    • @TheLoamWolf
      @TheLoamWolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Solid option if you only ever have to haul one bike around. The only issue we have with the Bomber Strap offerings is the price, can get a full-size pad for almost the same cost. Even the two bike pads from RF and EVOC are half the price of a Bomber Strap.

    I unfortunately didn't do very good homework and recently purchased the cache Basecamp 2.0. I was pretty bummed about it once I put it on my full sized ram 2500. I guess you live and learn. Thanks for doing this because I was going to save up and purchase another pad.

    What's to keep someone from snipping the straps with scissors and walking off with one of these tailgate pads? That's my only hesitation in pulling the trigger on one so far.

      I think what you’re paying for is the straps keeping bikes in place over sometimes bumpy roads. But if you’re just going to trail head then, hell yeah

  • @jasonk2799
    @jasonk2799 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just bought a Stumpy Evo and with my current tailgate pad the stanchions rest against the pad (instead of the lowers). Have you all experienced this on longer travel forks, and if so, any concerns about it rubbing the finish off/damaging the fork?

    • @TheLoamWolf
      @TheLoamWolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Speaking on my experiences over the last 10 years, I can't think of a time when I noticed any scratches or anything like though to the stanchions from that pad. If it is an area of concern, you can always wrap a towel or t-shirt around the stanchion for extra protection. Your more likely to scuff up the downtube (or any protector) from dropping a dirty bike on to the pad. *That said, this is just my experience using the same style tailgate all these year, different style tailgates could have different results and effects.
      Long story short, as long as the bike is snug to the tailgate and doesn't move / rotate when secured, you shouldn't have much to worry about. -Sean

    FLIck all these pads. Where's the innovation? Your test was on pristine clean bikes. Everytime I ride my bike down tube is muddy.
    Every bike I've owned has a hollow steerer tube. I just want to plonk my fork over a short shaft and not dent my downtube
