    I've started reading Is Mother Dead on my phone (I live in Croatia so by the time any of the books comes to me, the shortlist will probably be announced 🙈) and I'm loooooving it so much. I said to my husband after a few pages how there are books that you know from the start you're going to love and that makes me happy. ❤

  • @claudeyaz
    @claudeyaz ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The book that you mentioned about the whale, that isn't a disability ableism type of thing. In Korea, in popular fiction if someone has spirit sight, or they have some sort of power, they usually have a disability at the same time. it's the cost of the power a sort of equivalent exchange. Must give something in exhange to receive a power. The ideas of putting prosthetic parts onto dead bodies, so they have "a complete corpse," is similar. The idea of being disabled in life...is because your family wasnt filial, and didnt give you a proper burial.
    It's how a lot of the ideas of supernatural and sacrifice work with the old shamnistic practice in this period in korea, but modern people believe some of the superstitions today. The last president of Korea who is chased out of office had an shady relationship with a shaman.
    But some of the ideas of disability being q punishment? Yeh kinda messed up. But we cannot just ignore realities about the world that we dislike

    • @jenvcampbell
      @jenvcampbell  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Just because it’s tradition doesn’t mean it isn’t ableism. We have that in Christianity with disability and healing; we have it in Ancient Greece and the believe of physiognomy which is still prevalent in media today. We can contextualise cultural beliefs, sure, but if they’re still appearing in modern-day literature, using disabled people as metaphors and not expanding on that, that is ableism.

    Baulder sounds like my cup of tea. Your review has me intrigued for that one in particular. I read The Marriage Portrait after you reviewed it. I needed to read something predictable but still substantial. I loved the writing but kept feeling claustrophobic from the main character's limited space to move in. That was an interesting feeling particularly that I could not understand what it was at first. I love books that rattle me that way.

    I'm so happy to see Boulder in the longlist, Catalan is my mother tongue and I absolutely loved Boulder, it was my favourite of the trilogy (which you can read in any order by the way). Not many Catalan authors have been translated into English, despite the language having a rich literary history, but you should totally read Mercè Rodoreda, considered to be Spain's most important 20th century writer, and she wrote in Catalan as well. She's the most translated Catalan-writing author ever

    Sending you lots of love and comfort for today and any other sad days. This was the most informative video I've watched on the International Booker Prize this year! Your reviews are always so insightful. Kind of disappointed that I bought Whale on a whim because of the beautiful cover and interesting synopsis. Hi Jen not read any but your top 2 sound appealing. Most of my reading consists of reading copies at the shop where I work p/time as customers expect you to have read every book. But I did read a book from the library that u recommended a while ago. Creepy, I think u said. Playdate's (Alex Dahl) unpeeling of a main character's layers of secrets and lies made for intriguing reading, I think the plot was marred, for me, by the lack of exhaustive police scrutiny into the parents' backgrounds.(I mean just think of the Madeleine McCann case). So because of that i demerited it and awarded it 3 stars on Goodreads. Hope this was the correct book!

    I listened to Pyre a few days ago. It’s about 5% love story and 95% rather ugly caste bullying and terror. This book made me so, so angry and really left me quite despondent. I wouldn’t recommend it. There just is no up side to it.
    I have preordered Time Shelter which sounds really interesting. The cover alone pulls me in. I have some interest in Standing Heavy but haven’t ordered it yet. You’ve made me quite interested in Is Mother Dead, which is not a book that appealed to me when I first saw the list. I’ll have to see if it is available over here.

    I disagree with your characterisation of Laura. I thought she was very supportive of Alina while also recognising that conversations about motherhood can be dull and unrelatable for non-parents. Having been in Laura's situation, it is hard to feign interest in something you are not interested in - I wouldn't say she was selfish.

    • @jenvcampbell
      @jenvcampbell  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It wasn’t a discussion of motherhood though, it was Alina talking about going through IVF. Whilst that’s something that’s hoping for motherhood, it isn’t motherhood itself; it’s a traumatic thing her friend was going through, and she didn’t want to hear about it.
