Thank you for the video! I am curious to know more about the mizraps you prefer to use and what you look for when choosing a mizrap. I've bought several brands of mizraps from online sellers in Turkey, and I've also tried making my own from cable ties and strips of plastic, but I still don't feel that I've found one that I'm really satisfied with.

You're welcome! I've tried many mizraps too. I have some good ones which I made them but now I'm using Necati Celik named mizraps. I took them from Mustafa Copcuoglu, Istanbul
ive been listening to turkish traditional music played on the oud as well as arabic pop. Would that be a good start? I havent started playing the oud yet so how often would i need to listen to maqam music to understand and recognise them?

Hi, there is no starting point. good to hear that you started listening to those music. If possible listen to maqam music everyday a few hours to memorise and recognize the differences.

Cok tesekkurler Taner bey.
Hello. Could you please explain what is the difference between garip ayagi and makam hicaz ? If they are the same why does the word ''ayag'' exist? It's difficult to find some information about this.
ปีที่แล้ว +2
Hello, sure. basically both are hicaz. in folk side people call "makam" as 'ayak' both are same meaning. you can use both. in practice hicaz is slightly wider interval than garip. We can say Garip is a bit darker and more emotional version of Hicaz.
Hi ..What are the exact microtones for each turkish makam Please ? And some times I listen to turkish improvisation I notice that the player change for example from payati Si to hiçaz La and return again..what is this movement called ????

It's a big question. Each makam has its own character and feeling. You can join my online makam course on superpeer.com/bahayetkin to learn makams and their melodic structures. That movement is called "modulation" in Turkish "gecki"
Hi..How are you ? Arabic hiçaz differs from turkish Hiçaz ..ok Suppose the hiçaz is from Re on piano ..How many komas from mb on piano and fa# in turkish hiçaz ..I ask you because it is known that turkish hiçaz doesn't reach the interval of Arabic hiçaz ..the secret is in how Koma system works in turkish music ..I would be thankful if you answer me How many komas from mb and fa# if we play turkish hiçaz from Re????

Not very different. Turkish hicaz has 12 comma interval between Mi flat and Fa sharp if we say tonic is Re ;) If you look at from the piano side, mi flat should be half comma sharper and fa sharp half comma flatter ;) But you can play normal mi flat and fa sharp. Half comma is not recognisable interval if you are not trained to hear microtones, but it works in anyway ;) Meanwhile, makams don't occur only with microtones, the important thing is their melodic structure "seyir" that determines their characters.
A question : when you transpose for exemple rast makam (for a singer for exemple), does it stay "rast makam" or is it an other makam ? Thank you

Hi Michael, if you transpose a tune in Makam Rast of course it will be still Rast. Because key is not important in Makam music. The important things are intervals and makam's characteristic melodies (kind of behaviour)
is good the try thank you but things are more simple in music scales :)

Yes it's simple but not explaining with a scale. It's easy to understand with small melodies. In scale mentality, there is no differences between ussak, huseyni, acem, muhayyer, tahir, gerdaniye, neva and there are some more. they all use the same scale so in this case, all are same. what do you think?
I could argue that , you can easily understand what a pentatonic scale IS but if you want to sound good in major pentatonic blues , the things you will have to learn are probably identical in terms of complexity if you were to compare that process with learning eastern makams and their styles.
