  • Hannah Moloney is pretty chuffed with her home made chicken hutch, and rightfully so! Here she shares some of the hacks behind it. Subscribe: ab.co/GA-subscribe
Hannah designed a cosy chicken coop that suits the chooks as well as their humans.
She made her hen house from recycled timber from heat-treated pallets, and reckons its perfect.
Her first tip is to have a good waste-collecting system. Her coop is elevated on adjustable legs and the floor of the coop is made of strong wire mesh. This allows the poo to fall straight through rather than collect inside the coop.
Even with the open floor, Hannah says they stay warm because they all snuggle together to make it cosy at night.
Under the coop is an old plastic bread tray, found at the side of the road, that fits perfectly underneath and can easily be pulled out for cleaning. Any additional straw and poo can be scraped out and it all goes on Hanna’s fruit and nut trees.
The second tip is having an external laying area that abuts out of the coop and has a hinged lid, making it easy to harvest eggs.
Nearby is a wormwood bush - the fresh trimmings are added to the hutch to help deter mites.

Do you have a problem with any pests (rats and mice) or predators (snakes) when using the wire mesh as a base for the coop?
