    There was an Aerospace Industry study that showed that people that retired at 55 lived 30ish years on average. Ones that retired at 70 lived an average of 18 months. It is a very stressful industry - when I retired, I said that I escaped with my life! I couldn’t agree more with this video. Companies suck the life out of you and then throw you away when you are sick or get older, because they don’t want to pay the health care costs. This is why the ACA and Medicare are so important/ this is not a political statement, but a practical one. I have seen it personally happen numerous times sadly

    One of my favorite quotes from a nomad is "I got tired of paying so much for my stuff to stay air conditioned". And isn't that the truth? We pay so much for a sticks & bricks, and we don't even get to enjoy it; but all of our "stuff" does. I know I'm way behind on your videos but I'm really enjoying binge watching them and seeing your van life growth.

    You're presentations are just fine. And the topic of this video is pretty familiar to me. In fact I could say I'm getting into vanlife for the same reasons. So glad to have ran into you. You're a bunch of steps ahead of me but I'll get there.

    You are a hoot. I’m going back and catching all your previous videos since I found your channel recently. You are well spoken, thoughtful. I find many of your thoughts replicate mine. Anxiety is real, I can relate but I’m glad for you, Matty, that you’ve taken control and are finding ways to deal with it. Sounds like van life is it! ( I know from current videos, that’s true 👏)

    Keep rambling. I enjoy hearing your thoughts.

  • @donwyates
    @donwyates 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Matty, your thoughts & "rambling" pretty much parallel mine, and seem right on target.
    I haven't hit the road yet, but some of my anxiety is due to the constant "what if"s in regards to life on the road. Will my vehicle break down, and will I be able to afford to have it repaired? Will health issues become a drag on my quality of life? I've been relatively lucky so far, w/o major health issues, but am still considering bankruptcy to eliminate some debt. No Medicare until 65, unless we can get a more progressive administration in office. More anxiety.
    BTW, (early) retirement is (on SS) 62, which I just signed up for this year. It's not enough to live on, so I'm looking for a temporary job I can work to supplement that. My aches & pains (and age) hinder my prospects, so that is now adding to the anxiety. Will I be able, financially, to reconfigure the inside of my SUV for habitation, AND have some rainy day savings to help "christen" my departure from my current domicile?
    Please continue your "thinking out loud" - we're listening.

    Matty, since I discovered your channel a little later, I've been going back to watch your earlier videos. I'm not sure if anyone will read this but felt like I needed to put it in writing. Great title, something to think about. I worked for a large human services agency for a number of years. Another manager frequently told me and others that she didn't worry about anything because I worried enough for everyone. We made decisions that greatly affected other people's lives, including those that could potentially mean a difference between life and death. Later in life they gave a name to what many of us dealt with: secondary trauma.
    Even after a few years after retirement, I can still see the anxiety. It's interesting that I've come to similar conclusions as you. I'm on a path of minimalism with plans to sell the (too big) house, buy an RV to hit the road traveling. I have owned and rented a few RVs and love the comfort and the freedom of living/traveling this way. It will also give me wonderful financial freedom that I need right now. Okay, now I will stop rambling.

    Hi Matty, I am a 61 year old, van life wannabe. I have worked my whole life at the same place. 42 years to be exact. It was a physically demanding job, that has left me with many issues that have put me out of work forever. Had I learned what you are now executing, life could have been lived, rather than burned for someone else’s profit.You are on the
    right track brother.Keep it going.👍

    You couldn’t have said it better. For me, what lead me into van life was my depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. I have 1 month in and I can tell you that my depression and anxiety has lessen dramatically. I used to be depressed every day. Now I see it has gone away and in 30 days span, I’ve only gotten depressed about 4 days ( 4/30 days) And my suicidal thoughts are gone. Its so incredible that I had a nice rental apartment but I was so stressed financially and on the verge of just not being able to see the light. Now I only have my car with only a few items and I feel like a whole different person. Thank you for sharing this video. It helps me to know that Im not on the wrong path.

    We’re on the same page with vanlife. It’s nice to see another person who is also working full-time and just starting the nomad lifestyle. 😀 (I often watch TH-cam videos, while I do paperwork at my desk. ) I agree-i too feel less anxiety.

    • @MattyVanHalen
      @MattyVanHalen  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes it is sort of a rarity to see people living full-time in a van and also working a full-time job. what I mean is as far as all of the TH-cam videos goes, I've only seen a couple of others that are doing it. It's not easy! It's somewhat inconvenient but it's well worth it for the financial benefit!

    I totally agree with you. I'm roughly 20 years older than you, and we are living the NON-DREAM right now! still in a house for many reasons, but I am dreaming of it when I can get to that point (I pray I will). Take care.

    Appreciate your humbleness. Anxiety over bills is unbearable. I'll go back to research if you posted when/how/what van you landed in... it's sturdy as I barely felt all those bumps you apologized for. Important for us older people, anyway. Interested in where you park for sleep & showering. Ya lookin' clean cut & healthy which is encouraging. Oh, finally, do you work people know? If so, is that OK or do they look down on you? Good Day to you. TY

    Really enjoy your videos. Find myself in similar situation, will be full time within the next two months. Still intending on keeping my full time for some time. I just became disillusioned of what everyone said was supposed to make me happy. Dunno. Mid life crisis maybe? Seems awfully cliche. Anyway I enjoy the rambling

    Just found you via YT recommendation. Unless YT is spying inside my mind, I wonder why 🤔 ? I have a few questions, please? (1) Do you use your own van for work travels? Do you get reimbursed for gas and mileage? Can your employer provide its own vehicle or are you required to have your own vehicle for your type of job? How do you keep good maintenance of the wear and tear of the van? (2) What address does a full time van lifer uses for state driver’s license, car insurance, and for other legal documents, like a bank account and tax income return?
    I would love to do what you’re doing, but, traveling across North America, once my youngest child is done with college which is in a couple of years. I think I can pick up seasonal jobs along the way which will probably be a tax return nightmare! Just trying to get all the gory details in my head before jumping full time on van life - which sounds amazing to me!
    I wish you all the best! Thank you!

    • @MattyVanHalen
      @MattyVanHalen  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. No I do not use my own van for work. and as far as addresses go, you can buy a UPS store address that will work for just about everything. You may have a problem with your bank accepting a UPS store address though. So I use my UPS store address for everything except banking and for banking I use a friend's address who is okay with it.
