Great mares. I can't have Let's Elope ahead of Sunline. She had one great season and well treated in 2 handicaps. Sunline had longevity and won big handicaps with big weights.
Sunline of course from NZ perspective Ethereal was a wonderful mare often forgotten about but great to see her in this group. Another great mare that always gets a mention here in NZ among the greatest is japan cup winner Horlicks. Also the great southerner Show Gate
Were, not was. Winx was a middle-distance horse. That is the glamour distance. I love the Diva but the Melbourne Cup is 3200m, a staying race. They are irrelevant and it's handicap. Also pretty much irrelevant if you want to be cruel. She won a Cox Plate though which you strangely didn't mention.
I would have loved to have seen Winx have a crack at the Caulfield cup or even the Dubai cup and maybe the Melbourne Cup, instead of just racing in her comfort zone in the races and distances without really testing herself. I reckon she could have won a Caulfield cup and depending how she went in that, maybe even a Melbourne Cup.
Did you know that zenyatta is a half sister to winx? Well, she is. Their sire was Street Cry. They both like coming from behind and have that quick turn of foot on the home stretch. Watch zenyatta then watch winx and you'll see it. Go ladies, go!
Same sire does not make them half sisters. Only same dam does in horse world. Human world counts same dad as half siblings because, presumably, a man is not impregnating many dozens of women each year (thankfully)
Black Cavier was one speedy mare. The talk of taking on Frankel was silly but over sprints, she proved she was well above what UK had at the time. She was eased down and would have won a lot easier, plus Moonlight Cloud went on to multiple Group 1 winning success over a mile so the form was very strong. I think she’d have some trouble with the likes of Pinatubo over a straight 7f though.
You didn't see the best of her in Europe. She only won because of how superior she was. Pulling up like that was uncharacteristic and the lack of turn of foot too. During the race she suffered a severe 8cm, Grade 4 tear of the quads and another tear in the sacroiliac. In a human you would not take another step and require a stretcher. That's leaving aside her coat turning and seasonal changes on top of getting away from the track rider in her last gallop. It took her 6 months to get over those injuries. BC was devastating on a straight track and I will post her win only race over 1400m for you. Sprinting isn't an after thought in Australia, it's highly lucrative and valued and they are bred for it. It's not necassarily because they can't get a mile.
Digger McGinty Yes, very grateful for your detailed comment. I appreciate what your saying and and it’s true. That race in UK which is what her career built up to really didn’t go as planned. Her ability far outweighed the performance but there’s so much to take into account. The injury you described is the real game changer, we don’t know how well she may have run if that hadn’t occurred. Also the jockey dropping his hands and then trying to pick up again final strides, that was almost suicide. Only a supreme, strong and classy horse would get up after losing momentum. I watched the race and it’s ridiculous how she won without the jockey moving a muscle. The easiest Group 1 win ever. My mum could have won that race if she was sat on BC. I’ve seen all the wins in a showreel so I knew she was special but I would have liked to see her today as a 2 or 3yr old. The one thing that hurts in racing is having to see a great leave the track.
Some great mares , But Winx and Black Caviar where middle distance horses, Makybe Diva won from 1000m to 3200m and for that reason she should be No1 IMHO

Black Caviar and Sunline both proved it overseas. And Sunline carried weight. I think Winx is the best since Kingston Town. That is the greatest praise I can give. Maybe, maybe the best since Tulloch.

Black Caviar was a sprinter mate. The shortest race Makybe won was 1400m.
