I'ma raft guide in Colorado. Just really diving into r1. I've found I agree mostly with your advice. I feel I use some feathering of the blade as I get to the end of my j stroke. It's really hard to explain. Your videos are great. All I can say for any one who is trying r1, get out there and don't give up. It's hard, but you look cool doing it. And you will be a better boater regardless of your current skill level. Hell yeah.
