man your channel is hella underrated. super clean visualizations and simple explanations that dont diminish the complexity of the topic. subbed for this, this channel is def gonna blow up if you keep making these
After finding out how compression works through trial and error, and how to use it properly in my works, I love to watch "explanation" videos, and yours is by far one of the smartest and most thorough I've seen. I wish I would have found this video 3 years ago when you published it, but instead, I will always refer anyone who asks me about it to you. Great job! Liked and subbed. Let's see what else you can make me regret not finding sooner. Bless up!
Amazing! So much ❤️ for this 🙌🏻 This is definitely gonna be my go to video for explaining to people exactly how compressors work from now on. Subscribed! 🤘🏻
Your videos are beautiful. Not really sure how else to put it. Concise, informative, visually and sonically beautiful, and relevant to the topics. Well done!!
Thanks for your informative video on compression. Now I can go from "Default" preset setting on my compressor to actually knowing how to dial in settings! Much thanks!
It is the first video I've whatched that explains correctly what is the attack... It is not a time that the compressor waits to begin compression... It is the time it takes to reach maximum compression...
Yo this video is SO good. Compressors have been something I've seen in lots of things but mainly video editing tools. I've always seen it and wondered, "Wtf is a compressor?" And at the same time I wondered if there was something that could normalize the volume of tracks. This video solved both of those questions at the same time and I feel like I fully understand what a compressor does and how to use it for my applications. Thank you sir, your videos are art.
I just discovered your channel and I must say.. WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU NOT BLOWING UP YET?! I wish I discovered these videos wayyyyyy earlier. These tutorials are so crisp and clear. Beautiful animation, and simple explanations. I hope this channel gets the recognition it deserves! Thank you for all these videos man!
Man this tut is amazing but also it is your method of teaching, i think that i could learn absolutely anything if were a tutorial in this style. Keep it up bro!
Pierce, I've just watched all your videos. I've been waiting for videos like these to explain how these things work. I love the animations and the music and the meta-ness of using Photoshop, you're extremely talented. These videos are exactly what I need and I do hope you make more because they bring a lot of value. I hope you've found a job in NY!
You'd blow up in no time with a series of videos like this, in this style. Really useful, just missing an example on in which situation would we want the attack to not be 0
Thats a good question! The attack setting on a compressor is actually pretty counter-intuitive because -- the shorter the compressors attack, the longer the sounds attack. It's an opposite force. You use a quick attack compressor to shave off the sharp attack of a snare or hi-hat
Hi Pierce! Great video and explanation. I've understood all main moments about compression from your video. Can I ask you about allow to translate your's video for Russian speakers auditory and public on my channel? Thanks!
Sweet video, the visuals and production are really well done. I feel like I know enough about compression at this point to know what it's doing in theory, I just have trouble hearing it in practice unless it's set to something super obvious. Most of the time, I'll just be watching meters and assume it's doing the right thing. I'm bad at mixing. :P
Really good explanation! If I get this right, for a specific threshold and compression ratio, the gain reduction applied is not static but depends on how much the input signal exceeds the threshold. Is this calculated on a sample-by sample basis or a time-window is used?
i dont understand how the release work as hard as i try it makes no sence to me because you said that the only signal is afected is the one thats upon the threshold . so if the signal doesnt across the threshold is not afected, then why is there the release .
I teach at an Ableton certified training center and I gotta say this is the best compression video everrrr.
Any ideas on the most impactful thing I could cover concerning Ableton Live?

I can't believe this 5 year old video only has 25 thousand views. This was the best explanation of audio compressors I've ever watched.
'what the fuck do all these knobs do!??'
lol, great explanation and really well put together video
Wow ! you're the Master of Producing Edutainment. Thanks for the good work. These knobs became less scary.
Best and most straightforward video on compression I've heard. Thank you for doing this. I finally understand how it works.
A humble request to update more audio and music theory concepts like these please. The explanation is awesome!!!!
Perfect, gonna refer to that in my upcoming video. Thanks a lot, sir!
Probably the best compression video in mankind's history. Thank you
Wow, this was so easy to understand that you single-handedly cured my headache. Thank you.

Hehe, well the pATCHES animated guide was my go to and this is just that in video form so makes sense 🤘🏻Keep up with great work here and at pATCHES 😉
Only about 10k views after 2 years??? The production quality and content seem so professional, I am surprised this hasn't blown up already.

That video is just sound engineering heaven 😳 you are doing such a great job, it helped me a lot, please keep going man!
Thank you! Anything else you'd like to see a video on?
Pierce, don't know about him, but i'd love one or more about sound synthesis.
Awesome that was actually the next video I planned to make!
Pierce Porterfield oh nice! Hope your channel grows quickly! I'll be waiting
OMG, the "WTF do all those knobs do????" gets me mate. That's so trueeeee
This is hands down the best video about audio compression. Thank you!
Yea...the first compression tutorial that actualy make since. Thank You

incredible info. Something so many people have a vague idea of how it works, but you broke it down wonderfully. Excellent stuff!
this was so much more helpful than anything i've ever seen, you sir are an angel.
Thanks so much, i've been making music for a long time and still had a hard time grasping how the compression knobs actually work haha
Fanatic design and feel of the vid. Good job conceptualizing each aspect of the compressor as well.

This was *REALLY*, *REALLY* well done. Visuals, explanations, tempo. And I understood the concept of compression itself much better! :)
Loving these VOX style visualizations. Great job man!
Just wanted to thank you for creating this amazing video!
Yeah this is the best video on compression I've seen. Thanks for this!
Easily the best explanation IVE EVER HEARD!!!

Awesome!
Great Video!! I just wanted to know if you put a higher ratio, will the compression be harder and less natural?
Essentially yes, harshness also has a lot to do with attack and release settings as well.
how the hell is this video not getting many views??
tHIS IS GREAT!
you got the SAUCE
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!
super dope
