Berlin: A Secret Football Utopia

  • Unlike Paris, London, or Milan, Berlin is a major European city, not known for its footballing history. Divided by east and west throughout the time of the GDR, has created a football culture which breeds distinct communities around their clubs. Martino explores 4 different clubs in four days, discovering that Berlin is in fact a football city, just not in the conventional sense.

That's what I love about you guys. I follow Football in the UK and Germany, and the US, and American sports fans are just bad. I am a Chicago Fire supporter and they haven't really done well in over a decade but the fans just suck balls. Half empty stadium because they're not winning. The only time anyone cared in the last 10 years was when Schweinsteiger played for the team for a year. Bandwagoners. There's passion, but it's small. Part of that is the fault of the league though in my opinion. The way it's stuctured, teams can suck forever and there are really no consequences other than financial.

Finally! A video about Berlin, not just one club but all clubs.
I went to Berlin for the first time about 5 years ago, fell in love with the city and found solace there. I became a fan of Hertha BSC, where the fans not only took me under their wing but made me feel like one of their own, even though I was a foreigner. Hertha accepted me, I saw the way the fans feel about the club, how much love they have for it regardless of whether its a success story (Unlike Bayern Munich). I travel to Berlin from the UK as often as possible to watch the club play. It's worth every penny and second, it's like a part of me.
It's so nice to see a video about Berlin finally. Berliners DO love football, and Hertha fans adore their team. In Berlin I have learned we are used to just surviving, fighting for that but also have a spirit unrivalled in Germany, because even when life looks glum, Hertha fans have to remain hopeful (So very Berlin). Always building, and always fighting hard, Hertha BSC is a club that sums up Berlin... not glamorous, not especially dazzling but with heart, passion and love, always fighting and standing tall even when they get knocked down. Thanks for the video guys and some Berlin recognition. It's great to see German clubs being the focus of a feature rather than just Bayern/Dortmund.
    Hahohe! Hertha BSC ;)

I went to Berlin for that Union game. Great result and a great atmosphere. Also, quite interestingly, the train from Köpenick to Berlin was mixed yet there was no violence. Singing from both sets of fans but no violence. Lesson to be learnt there for English football fans.

I consistently come back to this video every six months or so. Every time, it fuels my desire to one day use my EU passport and make the pilgrimage to Berlin and live there for a while. In fact, this video may have been a subconscious reason why I went to berlin and oktoberfest last year... such a rad city and country.
All I want to do in life is skateboard, boulder, watch football, drink beer and design cool stuff. Is that too much to ask for? Until next time...

I disagree when he says there isn't a dominant club in Berlin. Hertha Berlin are obviously the most successful club, they have won a few things and have played in The Bundesliga for more years than any of the other Berlin teams. I disagree when he says they cannot pack out a stadium, the game he went to was a Uefa Cup dead rubber game as Hertha could not qualify for the next round and like I mentioned before it was a Uefa Cup game, crowds are generally pretty low across most clubs as they see it as a step down and not prestigious. He should go back there when they play against Schalke or another Bundesliga team, there will be 55-60 thousand there.

You should do this with Vienna. I moved from Manchester to Austria's Capital in August and, although I am a Rapidler, have been to numerous lower league team games, sometimes three in a day and less than two streets away from each other. First Vienna may just be the most unique football club in the world, Wiener Sport Club are renowned for their community, and Wiener Viktoria are half football club half dance hall. Football runs through the heart of a city known for coffee houses if you know where to look.

Last weekend I was at Union Berlin stadium, 2-2 with Regensburg. It was a fantastic atmosphere, I saw kids, women, old persons, all of them shared fantastic feelings. This is football, this is passion...and for this feelings, football is named the king of the sport.
For me, Union Berlin is the coolest team in Berlin. Hertha seems to be a club of the System, with all support by the System.
Union is build with Passion and are not so richest like Hertha, and their history is against the system...

Unlike many European cities, Berlin did not benefit from the economic boom that swept across the western liberal democracies in the decades that followed the Second World War. The city was divided between the capitalist West Germany and the communist east. West Berlin was an enclave surrounded by a foreign country that considered them and enemy within. Understandably this was not an ideal location for young professional footballers to to ply their trade and Hertha struggled to recruit good players.
As the football clubs in Munich, Madrid, Turin, London, Manchester, Liverpool, Lisbon and Barcelona to name a few benefited from the swelling wage packets of a prosperous workforce, Berlin cut an isolated figure.

The reason why my hometown isn't considered a football city is because neither of the clubs has had the sporting success that would put them on the map. Hertha BSC play in the Europa League every now and then, but apart from that there is little else they have going for them in terms of sporting success. On to my club: Union. True, we are known because of the passion and dedication of our fan base, which makes our club very popular with football hipsters. I'm not using 'hipster' in a negative sense here at all. I'm glad that there are people who look beyond trophies and the quality of the football, but let's face it, that's not the main measuring stick that most people use.
I could say a few things about B*C D*namo, but every word about that club would be a word too many.
    Greetings from Berlin
    Eisern!

Would be interesting to have such a video about the North Rhine-Westfalia region. So many clubs with great tradition and support and I'm not only talking about Dortmund, Schalke, Cologne or Mönchengladbach. Clubs like Wuppertaler SV, Rot-Weiß Essen, SG Wattenscheid 09 (best Bratwurst in a stadium in Germany, even Jürgen Klopp says so ;) ), Allemania Aachen etc. down to the forth division or in the second division clubs like VfL Bochum, MSV Duisburg or Bielefeld. I guess it would be fun interesting for you, maybe see a derby when supporters go crazy :)
