Just stumbled on this build...brings back so many memories of my first pickup. When I was 15 I bought a neighbors 1976 hilux. 18rc with a 4 speed. Spent a year fixing it up and had a nice ride when i got my license. Great workmanship and video production! Thanks
I can't even call you a mechanic! Your attention to detail makes everything a piece of art! Fantastic!
Love 22R-E Performance. They're my go to for my 22R-Es and wheel bearings too!
Leaving us hanging!👌 I have always enjoyed putting an engine together. Enjoyed watching how meticulous you are when assembling, well with water ever you are doing! Can't wait to hear it run.
I like the same job, clean and professional work.
its great to see how this is done....should be done.
considering the tools and the skill required, it makes more sense to take mine to a machine shop. thank you.
After watching this video, my only advice for someone building a 22r. Is to make the videos longer!
Loving the videos! Keep it up!
Hey man, it looks fantastic so far! One thing I'd note is the clips you used to retain the wristpins can bounce at high RPM and sometimes pop out of the groove. If you're going north of 8k RPM then Spiral Lock wristpin clips are cheap insurance.
Glad they fixed you up with a proper block. Good on them.
Stumbled onto this video looking for 22RE videos! Working to build an early EFI engine for my Celica.
Wow, great build and awesome camera work.
Can’t wait to see the engine all together
Looking spectacular. Great job Austin
Really enjoying this build! Jim built my 22R in my 85 4x4 about 4 years ago. Great build quality, great guy to deal with! I like the way you are building this engine with such confidence! Thats not me! LOL
This engine building stuff is way over my head, the bumper builds are more my speed hahaha. Excited to see this truck all done!
You got mad skills brother. Thanks for sharing.
Very Nice job bro!!
Keep going

Hi 👋 from algeria 🇩🇿. very good video. good job austin .
i am glad they fixed the screw up they made.
Love your show especially the bumper fabs + the coil-over work and paint… while watching this episode while you were checking “end runout on the crank without bearing shims your reading was ~.75\1000” the indicator was a 10/1000 indicator but the graduations are in .001” or 1/1000” as noted near the center of your dial. Some and the wife have bets on weather or not you repair and paint the exterior… she says yes… I say probably. 😅 I should have just kept watching as you caught your confusion right after I hit play. Good show.
I did some chassis painting with the 2k also - quite happy with results.
Look forward to the next episode man awesome
A trick I learned for faster masking along sharp edges: If you lay the masking tape hanging over the edge, and hit it lightly with a rubber mallet, it will cut the tape perfectly along the edges. It saves a lot of time cutting it with an x-acto knife.
I guess the machine shop screwing up turned out to be a good thing. It's gonna be a great running little truck when it's done.
My 22R has 525k all original. I wonder to what length did Toyota Japan measure the all those clearances?
Your engine will last till the end of time.
I'd like to see you do an LS build in a Toyota of your choice
Looking great buddy
Perfect! 😎
Nice work 💙👍
NICE! Did you unscrew the oil galley plugs at each end to make sure there was no crud in that passage?
Hey mate, might be easier for you when your masking with tape to use a hammer and follow the edge with that instead of a knife. Is much faster and gets a perfect edge
Good good job!!!!
Quick question : Is there a reason for sanding the “middle” thrust bearings and not the ones towards the front of shaft? I know you said there’s a push from the flywheel but wouldn’t you start at front?
Most definitely would like to see a race with Old Red and the Tacoma . Which diesel would be the top dog in a heads up race
❤️❤️❤️❤️DUAL CHAIN❤️❤️❤️❤️
شغل نظيف👏🏻
👍🏽🇺🇸👍🏽 looking good Austin
Good stuff bro
Where did you find clearance info? Getting ready to do a 88 22re rebuild and having a somewhat hard time finding what I need
What cam would you recommend without having to edit the pistions?
Awesome
Hell yeah let’s go! Can’t wait to see it full with the head on!
Next week's episode, 30 minutes of trying to get the oil pump kidney o ring to stay in place to install the oil pump! Hahaha.
Great job
Just curious…. If the cerakote coating is so good, why didn’t you cerakote the entire block with it?
Not sure if you can help me . I’m from the uk have the same pickup. Within seconds of starting my truck the oil comes out of the oil filter. I’ve tried 3 different filters but does the same thing every time
Glad the machine shop went good for their mess up and didn't let 'Joe Smoe New Guy' work on it again.
who did you buy your crankshaft and camshaft from?
You didn't put on any assembly lube on the crank shaft & piston parts. Have you ever bought parts from L.C. ENGINEERING? They have Toyota 22R engines and engine performance parts.
Im doing a rebuild 22r the head gasket isnt blown but do i need to resurface the block professionally or can i get away with putting a stock new oem head gasket? And not having any issues? Im resurfacing the head at a machine shop
great!
Gonna be good bro!
Sweet!
Honest question not hacking on you, I'm building a 1985 22R and my second comp. rings are tighter than the book says 0.0236-0.0323 in. well I ordered a ring grinder but after looking at your specs my .018 seems OK. All my first rings are .018 too but that is within spec 0.0098-0.0185. Would you say my second rings are fine ?? Keep up the vids cant wait to hear this thing run !!
Thanks man! I got my specs from Jim at 22reperformance! He builds these everyday, he’s got to know what’s good for them haha
@@austinniemela Thats good enough for me !! Now I don't have to wait for my ring grinder !
Personally myself I like lighter Brite colors on an engine, that way if something is leaking it's easy to see so you can easily address it without wondering where it's coming from!
How did you learn all this? I get nervous thinking about swapping my struts out or doing brakes.
Looking to rebuilt my 22r and add some more hp. Do you have a parts list ? And cost ?
A general tune up, cam, electric fan, and battery/intake swaps are probably the only worthwhile upgrades. For the price of a full performance rebuild you just about do a tdi swap for double the mpg and 50% more power
Hey does Jim still hide a couple jolly ranchers in his orders?
Where can i get a link to this gauge?
love to let you do all this to mine lol
coollll!!!!
Recommend going with the OEM timing chain guides. Quieter than the aftermarket metal ones.
He went with a metal backed guide, which is way better than the plastic factory one that is guaranteed to break off the bolt hole
@@unclejesse88 agreed that plastic one snapped and somehow seised my crank throwing a rod
@@unclejesse88 It only breaks if you neglect your engine and let it overheat. Metal guides are for people who don't address oil leaks. You get a noisier engine with metal guides. You should be doing a timing chain replacement every 120K max. Guides should be replace then as well.
@@boisebiker4713 Probably some other issues you didn't address. They break if you let your engine overheat.a They also don't last forever. Need to be replaced when you do your SCHEDULED timing chain replacement.
@@RobFishYT hey man no need to get upset, I was just sharing my story and agreeing with you. I bought the truck last year as a 18 year old and trusted the last owner. I dont know the history of the truck but i do know that the timing chain had been done 40k before I bought it. I dont care that it broke, it was going to get a v8 swap at some point now i just get to do it sooner
perfect lucky this car
О, я тоже так делаю в гараже.
👍
I wonder what my 400k mike 22re looks like inside.
👍👍👍😎😎😎
👍👍👌
Ah so the solution was a new block. Good for you but personally I would've been interested in seeing how one would've gone about repairing the old block like that, sleeving it perhaps. I don't think most people could get a new block from the machinist, the block might be bad from the get go and they cannot afford a new block.
We wish to completely repaint the vehicle
Every 22 R/RE I know has gone out in the bottoms end due to something related to the thrust washers.
Help mr
Great videos. No BS. Just work 🦾
First!
I don't understand y people do all the mesering tolerance if u had a good machin shop and they noe what ther doing. They should do it make a list
And give it to u. Besides if it's off our not right then it's gotta go back to machine shop some people so is it that your machin shop sucks and don't nice what thear doing our is it u don't noe what your doing

Dude your attention to detail is so satisfying to watch! Looking forward to seeing the engine completed.
Thanks!! Coming soon!!!
I live vicariously through Austin…😂👍🏻
