Just saw this, it's fucking excellent. So simple and powerful and unpretentious, just puts a fire in your bones. It's not trying to be anything too original or clever, just telling an age old story of recovery and doing it a great way.

Well, sad for them cause they're missing out. It's a powerful movie. It's weird to me to dismiss these kind of stories with 'we've seen it before'. From the first moment I saw Saoirse Ronan in The Lovely Bones(2009) with Mark Wahlberg, and the great job she did acting, I knew I would never miss any piece of work by her. She is genuine & naturally talented actress.
I found the story pretty captivating actually. The structure, cinematography and sound design felt pretty unique too. Also, the best depiction of addiction I've ever seen.

un film exceptionnel! une nature prodigieuse et excellement filmée, uns bande sons qui colle à l'action et aux personnages, une actrice sublime! 2h de pur bonheur et d'émotion! merci
I absolutely loathed the book, bought it purely based on this trailer and was bored to tears. The only thing that got me through was imagining how much better the movie would be without the painful prose & complete lack of any dialogue
Most Scottish accents are not at all Orcadian sounding. It could have just been annoying. Saorse with tbe soft voice and slight sing song does a good enough job. And looks well enough too. The story is about Orkney and being from Orkney and going home. Good to see Papa Westray on a big film.
Hmm, this looks like an interesting film certainly, with good performances and a strong message, although it's a bit jarring to hear the accent that Saoirse is putting on here - it sounds Scottish... Initially I thought it was supposed to be Northern Irish, but I'm pretty sure that it's supposed to be Scottish... It got me thinking how rarely she plays Irish characters, for whatever reason (not since she was on several Irish TV shows pre 2007, I believe, although maybe in Brooklyn which I haven't seen)... But we rarely get to hear her actual accent outside of talk shows and interviews etc... Indeed I guess that this is an adaptation of a book with a Scottish character, so she's playing one, but I wonder why she couldn't "just" play an Irish character and use her own accent! 😯😂😀 ... Adaptions often change the location of stories and the nationalities of characters, for example the book of Hi-Fidelity is set in England featuring English characters, while the Film is set in America with American characters, so for her to play someone who may sound similar an Irish person to non Irish people, but who sounds a lot different to how she actually speaks, I think might be to distracting to take seriously... UNLESS we forget who she is and only see the character, but I'm not sure! 😯😂😀🤘 .
@@rrrfc72 It's ok, it just that it made me think how rarely she uses her actual accent... While adaptions are often changed a fair bit, why not make it that she's from the Aran Islands, Tory Island or even Ireland's Eye (if people even live there!) 😯😂😀🤘
The Orcadian accent and dialect varies from island to island, but it is Norn, not Scottish. Very influenced by Norwegian and Danish, the true owners. Complicated history.
Because the story is based on a memoir of an Orcadian. Saoirse said herself she tried and couldn't nail the accent, so went with an approximation as close as she could and it's quite acceptable in my view, speaking as an Orcadian. Normally I hate people trying to do any kind of Scottish accent as they mangle it so badly.
